Breaking down the deal 03.01.09 at 1:03 pm ET
By

Here’s the video of my appearance with NECN’s Mike Giardi on “Sports Late Night” Saturday evening. We talked about — what else? — the Patriots trade of Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to Kansas City. In addition, here’s my story for WEEI.com today. Did the Patriots get enough back? Let me know what you think.

The biggest part of this deal was the patriots getting 18million off their books? Do you really think they’d take the 3rd pick in the draft and the ridiculous salary that comes with it.. While I agree they could of got more, I like what they did… here comes julius peppers!

I think they got enough for Cassel. I think everyone, at least around here, believe that we should have gotten 2 #1s for Cassel. I think Cassel was surrounded by great talent and he didn’t win the big games, although you cannot fault him for the Jets loss at Gillette. The D couldn’t stop anyone that day, especially a 3rd and 15.
Moving Vrabel is getting so much negative press around here. What if we land a younger outside linebacker in either free agency or the draft? I liked Vrabel as well but I think Bill didn’t want to fool around here. He needed to open up cap space and quickly-like. Obviously Pioli wanted Vrabel in the deal and the Pats saw a way to open up some more space by moving an aging linebacker. Let’s just calm down and see what happens. I wouldn’t want to be Josh McDaniels right now with a botched deal and an unhappy Pro Bowl QB. Oh well, come to think of it, Brett Favre was also a Pro Bowl QB last year. Go figure. I think Cutler will get over it.

Although time will tell whose side is favored in this deal, i was surprised by one thing. This deal seemed to be a perfect opportunity for the Patriots to do something thing they have done often in this era . . . stockpile draft picks for the future. Would anyone have been shocked to see a 2010 2nd or 3rd round pick attached to cover the value of Vrabel? Especially with a new CBA coming up, another opportunity to find cost certainty in the draft seemed like a Patriots slam-dunk.
