While the Patriots have done their due diligence with the big-time college prospects, they’re also making the rounds when it comes to the small schools.
About a week ago, the Patriots worked out defensive end/linebacker Sherman Logan out and defensive end Lawrence Sidbury Jr., both out of Richmond. In addition, they worked out Norfolk State cornerback Don Carey on Monday, and were scheduled to work out William & Mary cornerback Derek Cox Tuesday morning.
At Richmond, Logan and Sidbury were a part of last year’s FCS title team. The 6-foot-3, 241-pound Logan has been hampered by a broken foot over the course of his college career, but as a senior, he had six sacks and 47 tackles, including 12 for loss. Sidbury collected 7 1/2 sacks in the regular season to earn All-Colonial Athletic Association honors, but had a great performance at the NFL Scouting Combine — the 6-foot-2, 266-pounder has long arms (35 5/8 inches) and huge hands (10 3/4 inches). Only three ends in this draft have longer arms or bigger hands. Sidbury also had a 4.53 40 — the fastest time by an end at the combine. In addition, Sidbury also bench pressed 225 pounds 28 times. Only two ends at the combine were stronger.
Carey is a 5-foot-11, 192-pound defensive back who had a terrific senior season, where he intercepted five passes, recovered a pair of fumbles, made 42 tackles, defended six passes and blocked a kick. Carey is starting to draw more interest throughout the NFL — the Seattle Seahawks have extended an official visit to him, and Dolphins defensive backs coach and assistant head coach Todd Bowles met individually with Carey a day before his pro day workout earlier this month. According to multiple reports, Carey had a chance to attend Yale, but cost prevented it.
Cox, a 6-foot-1, 182-pound cornerback was All-Colonial Athletic Association football Second Team. He’s an undeniable playmaker — he tied for fifth in the league with four interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. He also made a significant impact on special teams returning punts, averaging 16.4 yards per return with a pair of touchdowns.
