| Wednesday OTA report: Bright sunny skies and plenty of Kevin O’Connell | 05.20.09 at 1:45 pm ET |
The Wednesday on-field organized training activity just finished up here at Gillette Stadium. Here are a few notes — we’ll have some choice quotes along for you from linebackers Tully Banta-Cain and Shawn Crable, as well as defensive back Tank Williams and quarterback Kevin O’Connell in a few. (And our man Trags will have more on new running back Fred Taylor — look for that later this afternoon as well.)
•There were 48 players – 21 in blue jerseys and 27 in white jerseys – present for the workout, which took place in helmets and shorts and lasted approximately two hours under sunny skies behind Gillette Stadium. Owner Bob Kraft stayed for most of the session.
•No players you might refer to as “established veterans” in the Patriots’ system were in attendance. However, there were four types of players present: players who were here in Foxborough last year but were injured (like Tank Williams and Shawn Crable), draftees and rookie free agents (like Darius Butler, Patrick Chung and Brian Hoyer), players with limited experience in the New England system (like Sam Aiken and Matthew Slater) and new veterans (like Fred Taylor and Alex Smith).
•There were three quarterbacks in attendance — Kevin O’Connell, Matt Gutierrez and Hoyer — but it was O’Connell who got most of the reps Wednesday, and garnered perhaps the biggest media crowd after the workout was over. (We’ll have quotes from him coming later this afternoon.) He looked poised and confident, and his throws had plenty of zip on them.
•Former Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman continued to work out with the receivers, and looked to have more confidence than he did during rookie minicamp, at one point making a nice grab on a ball he batted into the air to save. He worked with smaller groups of receivers at one point, including a group that had Edelman, Aiken and Robert Ortiz.
•With the knowledge that many of the players present are going to have to make their bones on special teams if they want to stick on the 53-man roster, there appeared to be plenty of work on special teams, specifically kickoffs. However, there were no kickers available, so punter Aaron Perez played the role of kicker.
