Updates from Day 12 of Training Camp 08.10.09 at 12:20 pm ET
By Christopher Price

FOXBOROUGH — Monday morning practice session just wrapped up down here at Gillette. Here are a few quick notes worth passing along:

•A hot day, probably the hottest of training camp. Temps in the 90s. Practice was held in full pads, the 14th of 19 practices to be held in pads this summer.

•After practice, several players spoke, including cornerback Jonathan Wilhite, safety Pat Chung, tight end Benjamin Watson, running back Fred Taylor and wide receiver Greg Lewis — who could be one of the funnier guys to play for the Patriots.

Lewis held court with the media after Monday morning's practice.

•By our account, the following players were not present: wide receiver Joey Galloway, wide receiver Brandon Tate, cornerback Shawn Springs, linebacker Paris Lenon, linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, linebacker Tedy Bruschi, offensive lineman Stephen Neal, offensive lineman Mark LeVoir, offensive lineman George Bussey, defensive lineman Jarvis Green, linebacker Shawn Crable and defensive lineman Mike Wright.

•Quarterback Tom Brady and wide receiver Wes Welker had a couple of nice connections. First, in a drill geared toward timing for the receivers, Welker made a sweet fingertip grab close to the ground, and then went tumbling. Later, in 7-on-7 drills, he hauled in another nice reception along the sidelines. (Later in that same 7-on-7 drill, Andrew Walter found Greg Lewis on an impressive deep ball down the middle.)

•The battle for the No. 2 quarterback spot rages on, but I have to believe based on what we’ve seen so far, Walter has usurped Kevin O’Connell for the role of primary backup. Walter looked smooth in drills (Coach Bill Belichick just remarked Walter “looks more comfortable in the huddle each day”), and O’Connell looked to have another tough morning. He overshot a wide open Tyson DeVree in 7-on-7 drills, and later had two bad throws that were easily picked off — one by safety Brandon Meriweather and another by cornerback Leigh Bodden. (In the interest of equal time, O’Connell did have a nice connection to wide receiver Shun White down the sidelines later in practice.)

•In all, it was a pretty good day for the secondary — defensive back Jamar Love knocked away a Brady pass for Randy Moss along the sidelines.

•Another guy who continues to impress is wide receiver Terrence Nunn. He went up and hauled down a pass from quarterback Brian Hoyer, splitting the defenders (Chung and Darius Butler). Later in practice, he had another impressive catch in traffic. He could be playing his way on to this team.

•Hoyer and veteran running back Kevin Faulk mishandled a handoff, and were forced to run a lap. In addition, offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer was also forced to run a lap during practice for an unknown infraction.

    Hi Chris,
Do you have the Chung transcript?

  • http://monkeesfan.blogspot.com Mike Daly

Can you do a seperate piece on Tyson DeVree? What I’ve been able to find on him suggests he’s going to become a legit player in 2009.

@beauli7: I do not have a transcript on Chung … I was not in on the conversation, so I don’t have those notes.

@Mike Daly: I just may have to do something on DeVree. Had another good session this afternoon. An afterthought at the start of camp, he’s really starting to come on strong.

    Chris – thanks.

Off-topic – I saw the HOF Game last night and some of the replay this AM – Titans look real, Bills look lifeless even with TO. Bills look like they will never go anywhere until new ownership (Buffalo native Jeremy Jacobs?) arrives. Titans vs. Pats is a grossly underrated rivalry – the last five meetings (1998 as TN Oilers, 2002, 2003 x 2, 2006) have been very physical games and even the preseason/pre-Jack Moynahan game in Foxboro in 2007 was pretty hot for a preseason game. The Red Sox bowl of 2003 was one of the greatest/weirdest games of all.

    Mike,

Great point–I agree completely. I LOVED those great Tennessee teams of the early 21st century. Really tough, gritty teams who probably were talented enough to win at least one Super Bowl. I always thought they just chose the wrong time to be good — there were so many other talented teams in that stretch (New England, Indy, Philly, St. Louis), they’ll be forgotten. Kind of like the Atlanta Hawks of the 1980s. Good team, bad timing.

That divisional game in Foxboro in the cold was maybe the most underrated game in Gillette Stadium history.

    Mike/Chris,
To play a little devil’s advocate, what info on Devree would suggest that he’s going to be a legit player in 2009? Good camp or not, he’s never recorded a catch in the NFL and only had 66 catches for 656 yards and 12 touchdowns in 3 years of college, the last coming in 2007. Not to mention he’s behind Thomas, Baker, Smith and Watson…..

Chris Price – the Ice Bowl playoff with the Titans was a grinder (I have 3 GAMES TO GLORY II and whenever I go to the Pro Shop that Titans ice bowl is always playing), but my all-time favorite remains the Red Sox bowl from October – the two teams combined for 68 points, Brady and McNair showed why they were MVPs, there was an unexpected twist in the breakout of Mike Cloud, and the sheer bizarre nature of fans cheering McNair touchdowns or Troy Brown’s kick-return called back because Johnny Damon or David Ortiz drove in clutch runs at those exact instants made for a game befitting the weird history of the Patriots.

beali7 – yes DeVree has yet to burst out on the NFL scene, but Thomas I suspect is done as far as earning Belichick’s trust (he basically has been in Belichick’s doghouse throughout his stay in New England) and Watson is good but still not consistent enough that somebody can’t push him. Baker looks like he’ll be terrific as well, but DeVree has been so good so far I can’t help but think he’s going to be this year’s BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

I am curious to find out what blog system you’re using? I’m experiencing some minor security problems with my latest website and I would like to find something more safeguarded. Do you have any solutions?
