| Welker returns: ‘A good deal for me’ | 10.04.09 at 10:38 pm ET |
FOXBORO — Wes Welker couldn’t have been happier to be back on the field on Sunday.
“It felt good,” Welker said. “It’s been a pretty depressing two weeks leading up to this. Finally getting out there is a good deal for me.”
And it certainly was a great deal for his quarterback. Tom Brady targeted Welker 10 times, connecting with him six times for 48 yards, including a 15-yard second-quarter scamper in which Welker showed his classic cut moves and proved to everyone watching that his knee wasn’t bothering him enough to affect his productivity on the field.
“He’s a great player,” Brady said. “I’ve thrown him a lot of passes over the years and he’s fighting his way back and made some great plays today for us. It was a great boost for the offense. He’s so smart out there and he’s really been wanting to be out there the past couple of weeks, so I know he was excited today.”
Welker could sense the return of rhythm with Brady.
“Yeah, I felt like it was pretty good,” Welker said. “There were definitely some errors, things we could’ve done better.”
How important was having Wes Welker back on the field? The next play after his 15-yard gainer, with the Ravens forced to respect the speed and route-running that he brings to the offense, there was a hole off the right side of the line that Brady noticed. He checked out of a pass route and decided to hand off to Sammy Morris.
The result was a 12-yard TD run that put the Patriots up 17-7.
Welker believes he’s pretty much back up to speed.
“I’ve been in this offense a few years now, so I understand the concepts and what we’re going to see in the coverage they’re going to run,” Welker said. “For the most part, I feel like it was all right.”
Just don’t ask him if he’s 100 percent.
“I don’t know a certain percentage, or anything like that,” he said. “But during the football season everybody’s going to have some bangs, and bruises, and things like that. You’re never really going to be a full 100 percent.”
If your Tom Brady and the Patriots, just having No. 83 back on the field is good enough.
