Bill Belichick On The Big Show, 10/12 10.12.09 at 7:47 pm ET
By WEEI

Bill Belichick joined the gang on The Big Show for his spot on Patriots Monday. The coach talked about what they Broncos did yesterday and what the Patriot can do moving forward against the Tennessee Titans next week.

The full audio can be found here.

How was the plane ride home?

Tough loss. I don’t think anybody slept good last night or feels very good today. It is time to move on and get ready for Tennessee. It was a pretty disappointing game and a close game.

Communication problems breaking down. Guys just not in sync right now?

I don’t know. Each play has its own elements. Things happen from play to play with different coverages and the timing of them and so forth. Overall we just have to do a better job. It is not like we haven’t done those plays before. Do them in practice and just hit them in games. It doesn’t take much to mess things up, we just have to work harder on it. It is not one guy, it is not one play, it is not one situation. We just collectively, one or two misses at the wrong time. You don’t score in the red zone or you miss on third down and you are off the field, you miss an opportunity to hit a big play and of course those are the ones we remember. It is not every play but it is too many of them.

Coverage that good?

They played a lot of that game in some type of coverage to Randy, over the top of Randy and squeeze off everybody else. We have to do a better job of running the ball and we have to do a better job of having everybody contribute and be a part of the passing game. That is the long and short of it.

We felt like there were some running opportunities. We at times got something out of it and at other times we didn’t. It just wasn’t consistent enough. There were times they had less guys on the line of scrimmage or around the box there and we felt like we could run the ball there. It wasn’t like we were outnumbered. We just have to do a better job of blocking them.

They were definitely concerned with Moss and had a lot of coverage for Randy, there was no doubt about that.

Help defense off field in the long scoring drives

I think in both those cases and we have had it before this year too there were penalties in both those drives that, whatever that 90 is, is now 75. You start adding yardage in there and then of course you have to take advantage of your third down opportunities, which we didn’t do. One time we bat the ball up in the air and they come down with it for a first down. Give it up on a big play you have a chance to stop them in the red area. We didn’t get it done on those drives there. So, we did have a stop in the red area but not on the two long drives. There were several points in those drives where we could have got off the field but we also contributed to our own problems with penalties. So that kept those drives going or added on yardage that they didn’t have to earn. All those things contribute to it.

Space for the Broncos receivers on the side lines. Getting the ball out quickly

They hit a lot of throws under 10 yards. They ran a lot of three step drops and got the ball out of there pretty quickly and they were trying to attack the soft spots in the defense and they did a good job of that. We probably have to defend it better and do a couple scheme things to take that away a little bit more than we did.

He just picks a side, probably where the lightest side is and that is where he tries to throw it. He did a good job, got it out of there quickly and the receivers were good after the catch. You know, Royal and Marshall did a good job on some of those four or five yard little passes and making eight or 10 yards on them and so our tackling at times could have maybe been a little bit sharper. You never want to get up there and get everybody on the line of scrimmage and worry about a four yard pass and they throw one up over your head. When they keep hitting them like that you have to take it away. We did that on the last drive there in regulation, we got up and clamped down on some of that stuff and kept them out of field goal range.

The overtime we got hit on a couple passes and a couple runs where they got outside on us. So, it was a combination of things on the overtime drive.

On “Wild Horses” formation

I think that is why they did it. It caused a little bit of communication. They put us in a formation we had to adjust to. And then they kind of motioned the quarterback back under center at times, not all the time, they did it both ways. And then when they motion him back under center, you know, then that gave us opportunity to get back into what we were in. But, it forced a little bit of a communication issue. I think there was one or two times where we didn’t quite get everything right on that.

They hadn’t shown it this year. We practice for that every week. We know everybody in the league has some version of that, but, what they did was try to get into the check game cause if you check the defense to that look then they stayed in it or got out of it and forced you to check it again.

Kyle Orton accurate as he was yesterday?

I think that his strength, getting rid of the ball quickly. Make quick decisions. Not that the doesn’t have a strong arm, he does. Kind of like [Chad] Pennington, sees things pretty quickly, makes quick decisions, gets it out of there and gets the ball to guys who can run with it. They have a very good group of skill players who can run with it. Marshall is hard to tackle, Royal and Moreno and Stokley. Did a good job of getting the ball to those guys and they had a little bit of space to gain three, four, five yards after the catch. They had, not a lot of big plays but a lot of possession plays and they were able to string together a couple times and get some points out of it.

Blitz at the end of the game worked

Well, they had it picked up but Jonathan Wilhite kind of went over Moreno. Moreno kind of cut him and Jonathan dove over him and pushed Orton back in the pocket a little bit then Tully as able to get him and sack him. Even though it was long yardage but we were definitely concerned with the field goal. You know Prater has a good leg and he could definitely kick the ball from 60 yards. What little wind there was, there wasn’t a lot of wind, but they had what little wind there was in the fourth quarter. So, we were concerned as keeping them as far back as possible for the field goal to end the game.

Jerod Mayo play on his return

He was active, he was active. He was in on quite a few plays. You know, first game back for a couple weeks, I don’t think he is where he is probably going to be in two or three weeks. I am glad we had him and he certainly helped us out but I am sure he will continue to get better through the next couple weeks as he works his way back.

Mayo and Guyton on the field at the same time. Regular defense?

Yeah, that was in the regular defense. We did that in preseason as well. Jerod actually plays kind of an outside version of outside linebacker and Gary plays a version of outside linebacker.

Both of those guys can run well. They cover a lot of ground and get in on a lot of plays. They are our two leading tacklers and probably will be because of the position they play and the kind of speed and range they both have.

Blitz taking guys out of coverage?

It just opens more holes. There were a couple times we did put some pressure on him but they ball was gone. So, that wasn’t really a big part of it for us. Again, as quickly as they were getting the ball out you are just creating more holes by doing that.

Galloway once again a healthy scratch

For every player you take there is a guy who is not going to be available somewhere else. So, four receivers. Aiken is definitely going to be one of them for his role the kicking game. Edelman returned kicks for us so that is an important role. Welker and Moss, those are important roles on offense so it just becomes a question of who the next player is. Do you take a fifth receiver, take a fourth running back, do you take a tight end? Another defensive back in the kicking game like Matthew Slater. Who are those extra players. Ultimately it comes down to you have to cut somebody off. You’d like to have all of them but you just have the ones you feel will have the bigger contribution in the game.

Ben Watson going down effecting play calling in second half?

It was the third quarter and he didn’t return so that didn’t effect the play calling. Ben’s our fastest tight end and our most vertical threat down the field. So, We don’t really have another tight end that does that. So if we put another receiver on the field we would have that but we wouldn’t have his blocking presence in the running game, pass protection, things like that. Ben gives us some versatility but we didn’t have that at the end.

When Light went out, did you bring an extra back on that side?

No, not really. When you are in the shotgun the back is on one side or the other. So, it is really more of a formation thing.

Sebastian [Vollmer] has played both tackles for us and he has really done a good job. Of course, doesn’t have the experience Matt does, I am not saying that, but he has done a good job for us. He is a versatile player for us, played on both sides, donen a good job in the running game, does a good job in the passing game. We see him out there everyday in practice, you know, blocking different players, like some fast players. He has done a pretty solid job for us, we feel he can block the guys he’s got to block.

Rob Ninkovich

Rob is kind of a surprise guys for us. He wasn’t on the roster going into training camp. We brought Rob in and signed him. He wasn’t with the team he had been with Miami for a little bit and New Orleans and he ended up making the team because of his play in the kicking game and his play on defense in preseason games and practice. Rob is a tough kid, he has some size, he has some power and he can rush the passer. He’s a good strong tackler and he is good in the kicking game so, he’s kind of a versatile guy. I think with continued good play he can work some playing time for himself defensively. Right now he is primarily in the kicking game. He’s started to show up and that is good to add playing time.

Adalius Thomas blitzing or in coverage?

Anytime you have a four man line and you blitz then the linebackers and DBs are in coverage and the way the game went with the three-step drops and the formation they did it wasn’t a big blitzing game, so yeah, he was in coverage most of the time.

Implementation of offense with new coaches

Our offense has really evolved over the past five years. Really from the ’04, ’05 season from what it was from ’01, ’02 lets say. Then, you know, Charlie’s last year here and as it has expanded under Josh and now with the offensive staff. That is what our system is and that is what we do. We pick and choose from week to week based on what our opponents do, the matchups we have. What we feel are the best plays to run out of a pretty broad offense. We have a lot of different options formation wise in terms of our passing and running game.

We don’t use all of it every week. But we have things that we feel like at one point or another we will need to use.

How much free reign does Brady have to change the play?

Depends on the play. We can do both. We can call them and run them. Some plays have an option.Whenever we have play called that looks like it is going to be a bad play, something we are trying to do and it just looks like it isn’t going to then he does a great job of getting us out of those plays. We haven’t had a lot of negative plays in the running game where we just cut somebody loose into the backfield and they make the play four yards in the backfield. Usually that has been more a case of a mixed block then just a defense that we can’t handle. Same thing on the blitzes. We haven’t been sacked a lot, not a lot of run-away rushers screaming in there. For the most part Tom does a good job of when the defense presents a look that we are going to have trouble with of getting us out of the play or adjusting the play so we have a better chance of handling it.

Happy with the defensive tackling?

No, we need to do a better job of tackling. That was a big emphasis point going into the game. They have good runners and guys who are hard to tackle either because of their size, their power, their quickness or balance or combination of some of those skill sets.

Of course, the biggest issue on the tackling is obviously space. The more space they have the harder it is to get them. The more you can box them in and confine them then the more you can tackle them. It is really a combination of those two things. We need to do a better job of keeping them tight and we need to do a better job of wrapping them up when we actually do get them.

Broncos running game a problem?

Overall the running game was, they had 125 on 25, 26 carries. I wouldn’t come out of the game and say that is what beat us. There were times where we can do a better job on the outside runs and let Moreno get outside. Bigger problem was the possession passing game and third down and two scores in the red area. We just have to do a better job of working on those things and keep working on the running game but overall that wasn’t a big problem in that game.

Offense bogged down in the second half

If you can’t score then that is a problem. We couldn’t get much going in the second half and that is not where we want to be.

0-5 Tennesee Titans

They have a lot of good players. They lose by a field goal to Pittsburg in the opener. They lose a field goal to Houston. They lose to the Jets because they fumbled two punts. It was 14-9 with a minute to go in the half last night. This is a real good football team, they have as good a back as there is in the league. Great receivers, good quarterback. Good offensive line, real good secondary. I know a couple of those guys are banged up, I don’t know who is going to be there and who isn’t. You know, Finnegan is an excellent corner. Good safeties, good coverage units and a good kicker. They have a lot of real good players. It is easy to see why they won 13 games last year. As we always say, records don’t mean anything. They could be 5-0 or 0-5 and it is still the same team coming in here and we are going to have to play well.

Pressure on Brady

They are not a big blitzing team but they have a great front four regardless of who is in there. They have six or seven and the roll them all in there and they are all pretty good and pretty aggressive. They are fast, certainly the end rushers in Kearse and Vanden Bosch and they can disrupt the edge. Jones is a very good inside rusher. They have a lot of good players.

What to tell a team to keep them focused when a team is 0-5

I don’t know what coach Fisher is doing. But I would say that our approach is that every week is a one-week season. It doesn’t matter what happened in the past. If there is anything you can have control over it is the one you play this week. Whether you are 5-0 or 0-5, it is what the team does this week, not what they have done in previous weeks.

Running

They run a lot of the zone play, the stretch play with Johnson. He has tremendous speed and is really a great running back. You have to be careful with him because he is at the point of attack and will start it one way and bounce the other way. If he hits a crease then he is gone, there are not a lot of defensive players in the league who could catch this guy. He has already had a couple 90-yard runs. Once he gets out in the open field it is all over. They like to get him outside, he likes to go out side but he is not afraid to hit it up in there. LenDale is more on an inside guy, more of a pound the ball, a LaMont Jordan type of player, tough nose player.

That’s the running game. They have a real good offensive line. They can block, they can run they ball, they can throw it, they have some skill players. And their skill players are hard to tackle. You know Gage and Britt. Those are big strong guys, Washington. They are big strong guys, 6’4”, 6’5”, 215, 220 pounds, that are hard to bring down. They are a challenge for the corners to tackle.

As dangerous to play an 0-5 team?

I think that it is but we try to take that out of it. We try not to focus too much on what the team has done in the past. We respect everybody. Every team in this league has good players, good coaches. That is the nature of the NHL. We expect them to play their best against us and therefore we have to match up with our best performance . . . They are going to have to start doing something soon or this could be their last stand.

Any update on the matador wannabe? (Seau)

No, there are no updates on that yet.

What does this team need to do this week they didn’t do last week?

Well, the most important thing is getting ready for Tennessee. What the matchups were against Denver and what they did and what Baltimore did the week before. It is none of the same players and really none of the same scheme. We have to really dig in and do our preparation on Tennnessee. What they do, how they do it, who their players are, what they like to do. What kind of tips and indicators we can get from them to kind of give us a little bit of an edge to anticipate what might happen in different situations. The kicking game, offense, defense. Do a good job of studying and be prepared. It is like taking a final exam every week except it is a different course. Its all football but its different matchups and different teams. It all comes down for us being able to execute and what we elect to run against them. Give our players a chance and maybe give them an advantage then going out there and doing our jobs. Do a better job of coaching, playing and have that all come together and do it on Sunday.
