Neither Patriots coach Bill Belichick or director of player personnel Nick Caserio would confirm the report Tuesday that veteran linebacker Junior Seau has signed with the Patriots.
According to Versus — the network that airs the show, “Sports Jobs with Junior Seau” — the veteran linebacker signed a contract with the Patriots on Tuesday.
“I’m very fortunate and honored to be involved with two class organizations — the New England Patriots and Versus,” said Seau through a press release issued by the network. (Click here to read the entire announcement from Versus.) “I want to thank the management of both for making my return to the NFL with the New England Patriots a reality.”
“We don’t have anything to say about it,” Belichick said in a conference call with reporters.
Caserio did confirm the report that Seau was in Foxboro recently for a physical and said that it looked like Seau had kept himself in “good shape,” but would not elaborate any further.
“We haven’t announced anything as of yet,” Caserio said. “We gave him a physical and worked him out last week. … From our end, that’s all we have to announce.”
The linebacker, a 12-time Pro Bowler, has come out of retirement twice to join the Patriots, playing parts of the last three seasons in New England. He has said repeatedly that if he was to return to the NFL, the Patriots would be the only team he would return for. He has 1,515 tackles, 17 fumble recoveries, 18 interceptions, and 56½ sacks in his 19-year NFL career.
