| Snap Judgments: Patriots 35, Bucs 7 | 10.25.09 at 4:11 pm ET |
The Patriots head into the bye week at 5-2 after Sunday’s 35-7 win over the Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium in London. Here are a few quick notes — we’ll have more up shortly.
•The Pats controlled the pace from the outset, dictating the tempo and controlling the action, jumping to a 21-0 lead and never looking back. The Bucs did have a few nice moments — including their touchdown right before the end of the first half, as well as a pair of interceptions on Tom Brady. But other than that, it was all New England, which dominated in all three areas — the Patriots finished with three passing touchdowns, one rushing and one defensive touchdown, while Tampa Bay struggled to cross midfield.
•New England quarterback Tom Brady finished 23-for-32 for 308 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions. We’ll give our game ball to wide receiver Wes Welker, who had 10 catches for 107 yards and one touchdown, a 14-yard reception in the first half that gave the Patriots a 14-0 lead. Randy Moss had five catches for 69 yards, while Laurence Maroney added 13 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown. Sam Aiken (54-yard TD catch) and Benjamin Watson (35-yard TD catch) accounted for the other scoring strikes.
•The Patriots threw multiple defensive looks at the Buccaneers’ rookie quarterback Josh Johnson, who was held to 9-for-26 for 156 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions. New England was able to get good sustained pressure on Johnson, with outside pass-rush specialists Derrick Burgess and Tully Banta-Cain spending a lot of time in Tampa Bay’s backfield. A week after outside linebacker Adalius Thomas was a healthy scratch against the Titans, he saw limited action against the Bucs, including 12 defensive snaps in the first half by our count. Wide receiver Sammie Stroughter was Tampa Bay’s top offensive player, finishing with three receptions for 63 yards.
•The defensive star of the day was New England safety Brandon Meriweather, who had two interceptions in the first six minutes of the game. He became the first Patriot to intercept two passes in a game since cornerback Asante Samuel picked a pair vs. Philly on Nov. 25, 2007. In addition, he became the first Pats defensive player to score a touchdown since Eugene Wilson returned a pick five yards for a touchdown on Dec. 16, 2007, against the Jets.
•Rookie Brandon Tate, who was officially activated Sunday morning, saw limited action at wide receiver and in the kick return game. Tate’s only yardage came on an end-around in the first quarter when he picked up 11 yards. He also returned the kick after Tampa’s touchdown for 22 yards. Offensive tackle Mark LeVoir, who was also activated Sunday morning, saw limited action on the day in a backup role.
•New England’s special teams had an average afternoon — Stephen Gostkowski was not called on for field goal duty, but Chris Hanson struggled, punting six times and averaging just 29 yards a boot. Tate had a pair of kick returns, averaging 22 yards a return, while Welker had four punt returns, averaging 13 yards a return.
