| Belichick: We’re on to the Jets | 11.17.09 at 1:17 pm ET |
Patriots officials said Tuesday afternoon they are moving on from Sunday’s last-minute loss to the Colts, saying the challenge of a key division game against an opponent that defeated them back in September will be enough to make sure the previous game is in the rearview mirror.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do here. … We know the Jets are tough,” said Patriots coach Bill Belichick, on a Tuesday afternoon conference call. “It’s a division game, it’s November. We have to play well on Sunday.”
“You move forward, you put it behind you and you try to learn from it,” said New England’s director of player personnel Nick Caserio.
Belichick would not address specific play-calling questions from Sunday’s game, saying, “I’m on to the Jets,” but did indicate the fact that defensive lineman Ty Warren and cornerback Shawn Springs were not active for the game were “game-time type decisions.”
Belichick did address a number of other topics (and we will have the transcript posted shortly) including their struggles offensively in the red zone. The Patriots are 25th in the league in touchdown percentage inside their opponents 20-yard line — they’ve converted 45 percent of the time. (By way of comparison, the best team in the league at converting in the red zone is Tampa, which is clicking to the tune of 71 percent.)
The coach said they’ve spent extra time working on their red zone offense the last few weeks.
“We need to do a better job of it,” Belichick said of New England’s struggles in the red zone. “Those are important points.
“We’ve got to coach it better, we’ve got to play it better. We’ve got to play our best football in that area of the field.”
