| Tom Brady talks about Super Bowl XXXVI, the Saints and Drew Bledsoe | 11.25.09 at 12:48 pm ET |
FOXBORO — Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wrapped up a 13-minute session with the media here at Gillette Stadium. He touched on a wide variety of topics, including the last time they were in the Superdome, a talk owner Robert Kraft gave the team today and his relationship with former starter Drew Bledsoe. We’ll have the full transcript along shortly, but in the meantime, here are a few highlights:
On the last time the Patriots were in the Superdome and the memories from that game…
That was the last time we were there. Mr. Kraft came in and talked to the team this morning about that. He talked about the special memories of that place. You’re right. You’ll never forget that day. That was pretty unbelievable for all of us. Your first chance to play in a Super Bowl and win a Super Bowl, and the circumstances of that season and that year, with 9-11 happening and U2 performing at halftime, it was pretty unbelievable.
There are only four of you left…
Yeah. That’s the way it’s been. We’ve had a lot of new guys come through, but even though they’re part of a tradition now, and when you wear that uniform, you kind of take on everything that team has been a part of, whether you were here or you weren’t here. It’s a great environment, a historic place to play. I think we’re all really excited about getting down there.
Mr. Kraft talked to the team today. What did he say?
He’s a very reflective person, and just wanted to convey a message to the team … he really respects what we do, and guys last night up at Morgan Memorial giving away turkeys and it’s a great organization. I think the way guys handle themselves in the community — Randy went home and gave away a lot of food to a lot of people in his hometown. He just wanted to express his thanks to the guys.
Is there a feeling that this Saints team has a chance to do what we did a few years ago, and we want to make sure they don’t do that — we want to protect what we did?
Not as much. I don’t think we … I think from their standpoint they obviously have a lot of confidence in what they’re doing. Any time you take the field — I remember the kind of confidence we had taking the field as an undefeated team, knowing that if we played a good game, it was going to be almost impossible for teams to beat us. But if you don’t play well, you do get beat. As evidenced by what happened n the Super Bowl that year. We go down there with our own feelings as well. Even though we’re 7-3, we have a pretty confident team too. We’ve played a lot of good football at times, and obviously, it hasn’t been all perfect, but aside from a couple of bad halves of football it’s been pretty solid. We’ve got to keep building on the consistency of the team. There have been little lapses over the course of games, like last week before the half and the end of the third quarter, that we have to eliminate, especially when you play a team like this. They’re confident, we’re confident, they’re one of the best teams in the league, and we see our selves as a team that could beat anybody we play. Then again, we have to go out and do it. It’s much easier said than done against this team.
On working with Julian Edelman and Isaiah Stanback, two former quarterbacks at wide receiver…
They were in a very different college offense, even though they were quarterbacks, they were more like running backs. They ran the ball a lot. They were great at that, as evidenced by what they can do with the ball in their hands. They’re both really explosive players. They’re smart guys, there’s no doubt about it. Any rookie trying to come in here and learn this offense has quiet a challenge, because it’s …. I wouldn’t say it’s one of the easier offenses in the league to really grasp. They know what they’re doing and I’m confident in what they’re doing, and that’s why they get the ball.
On the fact that he’s about to pass Drew Bledsoe as the franchise passing leader…
I didn’t know that until you told me. When I got here, Drew was a great player. He’s always been a great friend of mine. I have a lot of respect for him. He was one of the guys who taught me how to play this game. I’ve talked to John Friesz, another quarterback our rookie year, and I’ve talked to Damon Huard, obviously Matt and Rohan and Jim Miller, I listen to him on Sirius Radio. All these guys really have helped me become a better quarterback. I’m fortunate to play with all these great guys. You don’t meet to many quarterbacks who aren’t good, cool guys to hang with. We’ve had a lot of them here. … [Drew and I], we e-mail, and we talk from time to time. We’ve always had a great relationship. He worked extremely hard over the course of his career, and I think he’s really enjoying what he’s doing now.
