Feeling the draft: Inside linebackers 01.16.10 at 5:00 am ET
By DJ Bean

WEEI.com is the place to be for everything you need to know about the 2010 NFL Draft. We’re kicking off the draft coverage by going through the Patriots’ depth chart, position by position, and telling you which players the Pats could target come late April.

Previous positions:

Cornerback

Safety

Outside Linebacker

INSIDE LINEBACKER

State of the position: Gary Guyton (exclusive rights free agent), Eric Alexander (2 years remaining), Tyrone McKenzie (3 years remaining) Jerod Mayo (3 years remaining).

Mayo is clearly the best linebacker on the team and though his numbers weren’t what they were as a rookie, he has set an example on the field that the Patriots desperately hope the young players they bring in will follow. Guyton, though a solid contributor for a player who came in with Mayo, is a different case. He has been a marvelous asset considering his status as an undrafted free agent two years ago, but his spot starting alongside Mayo is one that the Patriots will need to consider upgrading as this defense continues to see an influx of youth.

Potential free agents of note: Karlos Dansby, Gary Brackett, DeMeco Ryans (restricted), Barrett Ruud (restricted).

INSIDE LINEBACKERS IN THE DRAFT TO KEEP AN EYE ON:

Rolando McClain: Junior, Alabama, 6-foot-4, 249 pounds

2009 stats: 105 tackles, 4 sacks, FF, 2 INT

What he brings: Pass-rush, great play versus the run, size/speed combination

Where the Patriots could get him: Top 10 (trade)

McClain can literally do anything anyone could ever want from an inside linebacker. It is very early in the process— weights have yet to be lifted, 40-yard dashes have yet to be run, pre-draft visits have yet to take place, etc.— but there is no way (barring injury) that McClain is available come the 22nd pick. As is stressed below, taking an inside backer so high wouldn’t exactly fall in line with addressing the team’s biggest needs, but players like McClain are not available every year, and put with Mayo the Patriots would have perhaps the best young pair of inside linebackers of any 3-4 defense in the league.

Brandon Spikes: Senior, Florida, 6-foot-3, 258 pounds

2009 stats: 52 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 INT

What he brings: Size, great play versus the run.

Where the Patriots could get him: No. 22

In all reality people expect Spikes to go a little later than 22 and possibly in the second round, but there is quite a dropoff after the top inside backers in this class. As a result, teams in need would be wise to not take their chances. Spikes and Guyton have similar to bodies, but the addition of the Gator would swap speed out for a bit more bulk and grit. Given the Florida connection, it’s hard to believe the Patriots won’t take a good look at Spikes. That having been said, the Patriots have far bigger fish to fry on their defense and should be using their top pick to target a defensive end or outside linebacker.

Micah Johnson: Senior, Kentucky, 6-foot-2, 256 pounds

2009 stats: 105 tackles, sack

What he brings: Excellent tackling, speed

Where the Patriots could get him: Second round

It is players like Johnson that should make Patriots fans glad that their team has three second-round picks. Johnson has the bulk and tackling ability to compliment Mayo— who is generally all over the field— perfectly. He might not be a complete standout like McClain, but he has all the tools to be a starter in the NFL. Plugging in somebody who can tackle like Johnson would strengthen the overall defense greatly, and if they feel confident enough that he will be on the board by the time the Jaguars’ pick in the second round comes up, they can use their top pick to upgrade the pass rush.

Daryl Washington: Senior, Texas Christian, 6-foot-3, 228 pounds.

2009 stats: 109 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 INT

What he brings: Speed, special teams play.

Where the Patriots could get him: Second round

Much like the reluctance to see a selection of Patrick Robinson being worth it, Washington wouldn’t bring much that this defense doesn’t already have. Washington brings the speed of Guyton, but lacks the bulk badly. It might have to be go big or go home regarding inside linebackers in the first two rounds for the Patriots, as nobody would really be an immediate game-changer like McClain. As for Washington’s special teams contributions and athleticism, check out the video below.

    Hi Chris,
In my opinion, McClain is one of the biggest defensive difference makers available in the draft. Not only does he have the speed, size, instincts and athleticism to be a beast vs. the run and pass, but he also puts a ton of time in watching film (which BB places a premium on) to know his opponents tendancies and properly align his teammates, he’s been called a coach on the field. Personally I think he has the size and athleticism to make switch to 3-4 OLB if needed to go along with ideal BB size for the position. You also can’t discount the Saban connection.

Of course he’s projected to go in the top 15, maybe higher so you’d have to be aggressive, move up and get him which isn’t BB’s MO in round 1. I’d love to see them be aggressive in this case.

  • beauli7

If McClain isn’t the guy, I’m also a big fan of what Spikes brings to the table as he’s a tough, aggressive and instinctive player with good size/speed (6-3 250 4.7) and decent coverage/ball skills (6 career INT’s returning 4 for TD) who appears to be a possible 3 down backer at the next level. He’s was the emotional defensive leader for Gators…….I like him as an option at 22.

  • Charles

McClain looks like a beast,Spikes has been very good at UOF for all 4 years,Washington was very impressive at TCU,but don’t forget guys like Lee from linebacker U Penn St.,Sharpeton from The U all of these guys will be available to the Patriots in the draft though I think McClain maybe to far up in the draft for the Patriots, another LB too keep an eye on would be Stamper also from Florida…

  • txpatfan

Forget,a linbacker, pats need defensive end with pass rush speed(sweeney, suggs)thats what the pats really need!

  • royalrooter

BB blew it last year with linebackers. There were several of them on the board when the Pats were picking and they passed on them all. They didn’t move up to get Cushing but, Matthews, Laurinitis and Managua were all available and the Pats traded out of the 1st instead of getting Matthews. In the 2nd Laurinitis and Managua were available and they chose Chung, Butler and Brace(complete bust). They need to make a big splash and trade up to get Mclain but its not in the Pats MO to do this. This linebacking corp this year was atrocious so IMO this is their most glaring weakness that needs to be strengthened.

  • SED

Belichick and Casario are on record stating that they will not draft an OLB under 6’5″, which is why Matthews, Maluaga ,and Laurinitis were all passed over. Also, they like all their players to have Wonderlic score of 20 or greater.

  • John

McClain is one of my favorite players in this years draft. Depending how the board falls, I would love to see the Patriots explore trading up to get him. There are too many things that Belichick would love about this guy – big, smart, versatile, played in a Nick Saban 3-4 defense. If he dropped out of the top 10, it may be something to look at. Denver @ #11, Miami at #12, and NY Giants at #15 would all love to draft McClain though.

  • buddy

Good group although I think that Washington is to small to play inside in this system.

  • nick

no need for an impact ILB, mckenzie is going to be way better then people think if he can stay healthy. OLB, CB, WR,
