| Wilfork warms to the idea of a possible return to Florida | 01.28.10 at 10:56 pm ET |
Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork said Thursday that getting a chance to play in his home state of Florida again would be “a dream come true.”

The 28-year-old Wilfork, who just finished the final year of a six-year contract, is upset with the state of his current contractual situation, and told WEEI as much earlier this week. And the Florida native told Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Thursday that two years of trying to negotiate an extension in New England have left him pondering the idea of playing for Miami or Tampa Bay.
“We’ve been waiting for two years. Been trying to talk for two years. I did all the things I could do. Did all the right things to the point people questioned me why I did it. Why I was the good soldier. Why I playing through pain and risking my career for one year. But I loved the game of football,” said Wilfork.
“I signed a six-year deal [as a rookie] when a lot of people weren’t. I played it out. I did the right thing and it’s time for me to move on. This is definitely not on me. We’ll see where it goes from here.”
Wilfork did say that while he could see himself returning to South Florida — where he starred as a high schooler at Santaluces High School and in college at Miami — his first preference is to stay in New England.
“I love great weather. I love football. It doesn’t matter where I play. I just want to have security for my family,” he said. “I would love to stay in New England if I had the chance. I love New England because of my teammates, my family. My son, the friends and connections we’ve made up there, it’s some great people up there. But if it doesn’t work out I’ll weigh my options, I tell you that.”
If the Patriots and Wilfork are unable to reach an agreement, New England could hit Wilfork with the franchise tag. But Wilfork told WEEI that he wants no part of a franchise tag, saying he desires the security that comes with a long-term agreement.
“I want a long-term deal, or I want to be free. Point blank. And that’s how I’m looking at it,” he said. “That’s how my family is looking at it. It’s a short window of opportunity for me to go and make the type of money that I want to make. And hey, like I said, family comes first.
“Yeah, [the franchise tag is] decent money for most people out there. What I do, it’s OK,” he added. “But I don’t look at myself as an OK player. Like I said, it’s just basically a slap in my face and it’s insulting to me to tell me I’m an OK player.”
