| Throwing to receivers allowed… | 02.26.10 at 4:52 pm ET |
INDIANAPOLIS — …But you wouldn’t think it if you looked at the workout itineraries of Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Tim Tebow, Dan Lefevour, and Colt McCoy.
Whether it is due to injury or otherwise, the household names at quarterback are making sure that none of their targets at the combine have names themselves. As a result some mid-round quarterbacks stand to benefit a ton this weekend.
Leading that group is Cincinnati’s Tony Pike, though his frame has come into question — he’s just 223 pounds for a man who stands at 6-foot-6.
“A lot of guys are uncomfortable throwing to a bunch of different receivers,” Pike said in defense of his fellow quarterbacks. “Some guys don’t want to get that image of a few bad balls, but in my head I understand that GMs know that you’re throwing to new receivers.
“I want to go out and show solid footwork and a good release and throw some good balls and just compete.”
Another big knock on Pike is the fact that he didn’t throw enough of a deep ball in an offense that utilizes quicker and shorter routes. Still, Pike pointed to his arm strength, in conjunction with his heralded accuracy, as a strength that he plans to showcase when throwing to receivers.
Lefevour, who many believe will be the third quarterback chosen after Bradford and Clausen (“I like to think that I am one of those big-name guys,” he said) chose not to throw to receivers because he wants to ensure that when scouts do see him he has “the best product” on the field.
As a result of the decisions from quarterbacks like Lefevour, lesser-known players like John Skelton out of Fordham are basking in the opportunity to stand out on one of the NFL’s biggest stage.
“I can’t explain why they’re doing that,” Skelton said, perhaps channeling some 2004 J.P. Losman. “This is a great opportunity … why you wouldn’t want to throw, I don’t understand.”
As for the attention now being turned from the big names to the little school star, the 6-foot-5 Skelton, who has drawn comparisons to Joe Flacco based on both arm strength and small-school status, Skelton didn’t mind a bit.
“[NFL teams] are here to watch somebody,” said Skelton, who had 9,928 passing yards and 69 touchdowns at Fordham. “It might as well be me.”
