Speaking on WEEI’s “Big Show” on Tuesday, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said linebacker Marques Murrell has agreed to join the Patriots. A linebacker out of Appalachian State, the 6-foot-2, 250-pound Murrell has played the last three seasons for the Jets, primarily as a special teamer. This past season was the best of his three-year career, finishing with 12 tackles in 10 games.
With the Patriots, he figures to provide some depth on special teams as well as linebacker, and could provide some help as a pass-rusher — at Appalachian State, he recorded 36 sacks.
Murrell, the younger brother of former NFL running back Adrian Murrell, gained a small measure of notoriety last season when he and teammate James Ihedigbo threw punches at Buffalo’s Derek Fine. The action drew a fine from the NFL and a benching from coach Rex Ryan for the following week.
