| Mocking the Draft: Take 8 | 04.07.10 at 12:20 am ET |
WEEI.com isn’t batting an eye when it comes to the 2010 NFL Draft. From interviews with experts to original mock drafts to weekly looks at potential Patriots, this is the place to be leading up to draft weekend, April 22-24.
Just when we thought we knew what every team was thinking, the Eagles and Redskins go and pull off a deal that could hurt the draft’s top prospect, help an offensive lineman and most shake up most draft boards like a used Etch-A-Sketch. Here’s the latest look at WEEI.com’s mock draft, including a previously unimaginable slip for Ndamukong Suh.
ROUND 1
![]()
1. St. Louis (1-15) Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma Anyone who still doesn’t have Bradford going No. 1 overall needs to turn in their gun and pick value chart. The release of Marc Bulger only cements the fact that they have recognized as an organization that they are going to start anew at quarterback. Don’t let what GM Billy Devaney said on Tuesday fool you. Bradford should be the guy.
![]()
2. Detroit (2-14) Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State The trendy thinking following the McNabb trade is that the Redskins will take Okung with the fourth pick. My line of thinking is that there is no way the Lions should let the best tackle in a very impressive class slip through their fingers, regardless of the other talent that’s available to them this high.
![]()
3. Tampa Bay (3-13) Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma This is a pick that has been consistent throughout nearly all of our mock drafts, and if I had to guess it might be the non-Bradford Top 10 pick I have the most confidence in at this point. The quarterback is generally the face of the franchise, but McCoy would have an immediate impact and give the team a character it has lacked.
![]()
4. Washington (4-12) Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa Bulaga is another guy who may end up winning big from the McNabb trade. The Redskins never gave Jason Campbell the line he deserved, but it’s a safe bet that Mike Shanahan will do it for McNabb. As surprising as passing on Ndamukong Suh would be, this pick wouldn’t be close to a reach.
![]()
5. Kansas City (4-12) Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska There’s a good chance a trade would be made before it could come to this, but conventional thinking often trumps putting the best players as high as they can go. Suh would be an outrageous value with the fifth pick and would take the other end opposite Tyson Jackson. With his 6-foot-3 7/8 frame, Suh would be a rock at end and mercifully end Glenn Dorsey’s time in the 3-4. It wouldn’t be a major surprise to see Dorsey moved to a 4-3 team even if this pick doesn’t take place.
6. Seattle (5-11) Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma There is no shame in taking someone who is the third-best at their position with the sixth pick — that’s how good this year’s draft is. Williams has three years of experience at right tackle, but would be called upon to fill the void on the left side left by the retired Walter Jones.
![]()
7. Cleveland (5-11) Eric Berry, S, Tennessee Some of our previous mock drafts have seen the Chiefs, who have many holes, sitting back and taking the best available player in the form of Berry. With Suh falling to them, the Browns are allowed to follow suit and get perhaps the best safety prospect since the late Sean Taylor.
![]()
8. Oakland (5-11) Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers Yes, Davis would be a good fit in Oakland, but this could also be the slot at which the draft is shaken up with Clausen’s selection. Whoever the choice is, it should be on the offensive side of the ball to make up for busts of the past.
![]()
9. Buffalo (6-10) Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame I don’t buy any of the jibber-jabber that Clausen sees a Brady Quinn-esque fall on draft day. His skill set is dramatically better than Quinn’s, and there are more teams this year that could use a quarterback. If he doesn’t go at No. 9 he could go to the Jaguars, after which a fall to the Cardinals could take place. Again, I just don’t see it happening.
![]()
![]()
11. Denver [from Chicago] (7-9) Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State The Broncos may have swung and missed on a guy who saw his stock skyrocket last year in the form of Robert Ayers, but Wilson would help a defense that has already made smaller moves for Jarvis Green, Justin Bannan and Nate Jones. Wilson would be a better option than Jones and Alphonso Smith for the No. 2 corner spot, and become the man when Champ Bailey’s playing days come to an end.
![]()
12. Miami (7-9) Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee This is the first spot at which Dez Bryant could begin receiving attention, but getting someone to play nose tackle for the long haul would be a far better choice for a team that is dealing with both age and suspension in the form of Jason Ferguson.
![]()
13. San Francisco (8-8) Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho This pick would be lunacy and genius, all rolled into one. The Jaguars helped set their offense up in the long run last year by taking offensive linemen with their first two picks and the 49ers have a chance to do the same here. With David Baas manning the left side, the Niners would perhaps give themselves the best pair of young guards in the league by adding the tough-as-nails Iupati.
![]()
14. Seattle [from Denver] (8-8) C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson Time and time again the first back taken in a draft fails to be the most effective. Even so, Spiller’s speed and vision make him worth the risk in a draft that might have just one running back with a true first-round grade. Spiller will do well in a split role with Justin Forsett.

15. New York Giants (8-8) Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama The Giants’ priority should be inside linebacker with this pick, considering that passing on McClain could prove costly if both Daryl Washington and Sean Lee are off the board when they pick again at No. 46.

![]()
17. San Francisco [from Carolina] (8-8) Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland Already having selected Iupati, the 49ers could finish off rebuilding the right side of their line with the addition of Campbell, who was the star of the combine. Joe Staley seems to have the starting job at left tackle tied down, but that shouldn’t scare the team away from making Alex Smith’s life dramatically easier.
![]()
18. Pittsburgh (9-7) Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers It might be a little crazy this high, but this is where you have to start discussing the Ryan Mathews and Jahvid Best coming off the board following the loss of Willie Parker. Either pick would be a wretched value, so the Steelers might be wise to wait on a running back and fill their other major position of need at cornerback. Like Wilson, McCourty has risen a lot since the end of the season and is a safe bet to be gone in the first 20 picks.

19. Atlanta (9-7) Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida Brandon Graham has been the pick for Atlanta in recent weeks, but Dunlap has better size to play on the line in the 4-3, which is what they may have had to force on Graham. Motivation and consistency have been major issues with Dunlap, but his speed (4.61 40-yard dash) for his size (6-foot-5 6/8, 279 pounds), is positively outrageous.
![]()
20. Houston (9-7) Earl Thomas, S, Texas The Texans would likely turn this pick in faster than you could teach a child to correctly pronounce “Ndamukong Suh.” The defense is Houston is really coming along nicely and has stars on both the line and at linebacker. Thomas would give them a playmaker in the secondary who could play either safety position or cornerback.
![]()
21. Cincinnati (10-6) Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech In a draft stacked with elite defensive ends, something has told me all along that Morgan will be the guy who falls this far because he isn’t overwhelming in any area. The chances are great that he will have a more productive career than the Pierre-Pauls and Dunlaps, but teams that want all the potential they can get will be the ones that pass on Morgan.
![]()
![]()

24. Philadelphia (11-5) Sergio Kindle, DE, Texas The Eagles are in tremendous position here, as they can either grab the top pass-rusher or fill another need and assume that Kindle, Sapp, or Everson Griffen could be there 13 picks later.

25. Baltimore (9-7) Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma Would the Ravens go for the bigger need at tight end with Bryant still on the board? They should, but don’t be surprised if it is Rob Gronkowski rather than Gresham.
![]()
26. Arizona (10-6) Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma Bryant didn’t do himself or his draft status any favors when he spoke out against the media last week. Rumor has it opposing corners are tougher than writers, so teams concerned with his attitude could lead to a Top 10 talent going at the bottom of the first round.
![]()
27. Dallas (11-5) Maurkice Pouncey, OL, Florida With Iupati gone, the Cowboys go from getting the draft’s best guard to the draft’s most talked about guard. Inside linebacker is another need, but this might be too high for Daryl Washington. They get their man though (see pick No. 59).

28. San Diego (13-3) Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech It’s hard to peg which running back the Chargers should go after here. Dwyer is the easy choice when considering that he will be teamed with Darren Sproles for a year, but with Sproles on a one-year deal they could consider a more complete back like Ryan Mathews. The Chargers could also wait for the 40th pick and have the teams in between make up their mind for them.
![]()
29. New York Jets (9-7) Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson Sapp going in the first round is far more likely than it was just a few days ago. Essentially teams that have worked out or will work out Sapp (the Jets are in that group) need to consider the Eagles could very likely take him at No. 37, so teams picking before then might not want to risk losing him.
![]()
30. Minnesota (12-4) Cam Thomas, DT, UNC The Vikings should be comfortable knowing that, unless somebody slides and could be had at great value (which is very likely in a draft this deep), they can stand pat and let Pat Williams’ replacement come to them. Thomas isn’t on the same level as Dan Williams, but he can make a difference. Cornerback is also an option.

31. Indianapolis (14-2) Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State Pouncey would have been a great pick here, but Marlin Jackson wasn’t very effective even when he was healthy. Robinson has the speed the Colts like.
![]()
32. New Orleans (13-3) Everson Griffen, DE/OLB, USC The Saints would likely prefer Dunlap, but Griffen has good size and versatility. Similarly to Dunlap, the biggest question regarding Griffen is whether he will give you his all on every play.
ROUND 2
33. St. Louis (1-15) Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri
34. Detroit (2-14) Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State
35. Tampa Bay (3-15) Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois
36. Kansas City (4-12) Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
37. Philadelphia [from Washington (4-12)] Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest
38. Cleveland (5-11) Sean Lee, ILB, Penn State
39. Oakland (5-11) Jahvid Best, RB, California
40. San Diego [from Seattle (5-11)] Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
41. Buffalo (6-10) Brian Price, DT, UCLA
42. Tampa Bay [from Chicago (7-9)] Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
43. Miami (7-9) Damian Williams, WR, USC
44. New England [from Jacksonville (7-9)] Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona
45. Denver (8-8) Alex Carrington, DE, Arkansas State
46. New York Giants (8-8) Taylor Mays, S, USC
47. New England [from Tennessee (8-8)] Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
48. Carolina (8-8) Vladimir Ducasse, OL, Massachusetts
49. San Francisco (8-8) Jerry Hughes, OLB, TCU
50. Kansas City [from Atlanta (9-7)] Charles Brown, OT, USC
51. Houston (9-7) Chad Jones, S, LSU
52. Pittsburgh (9-7) Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford
53. New England (10-6) Daryl Washington, LB, TCU
54. Cincinnati (10-6) Jon Asamoah, OL, Illinois
55. Philadelphia (11-5) Nate Allen, S, South Florida
56. Green Bay (11-5) Jared Veldheer, OT, Hillsdale
57. Baltimore (9-7) Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern
58. Arizona (10-6) Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama
59. Dallas (11-5) Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
60. Seattle [from San Diego (13-3)] Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse
61. New York Jets (9-7) Andre Roberts, WR, Citadel
62. Minnesota (12-4) Colt McCoy, QB, Texas
63. Indianapolis (14-2) Dexter McCluster, RB, Ole Miss
64. New Orleans (13-3) Perrish Cox, CB, Oklahoma State
