FOXBORO — A few quick notes from the Thursday afternoon practice session that just wrapped up down here at Gillette Stadium:
•The practice went an hour and 45 minutes, and was held under clear skies on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium. Much nicer weather than the morning sessions with temperatures in the 80s.
•The attendance report was the same as it was in the morning session, as offensive lineman Logan Mankins and outside linebacker Derrick Burgess were missing. (Reports indicate that Burgess is contemplating retirement.) In addition, the same collection of players who were in sweats — wide receivers Darnell Jenkins and Sam Aiken, as well as defensive lineman Ron Brace — were also inactive for the session. In addition, Wes Welker was in attendance for a portion of the afternoon session. He wasn’t being put through the paces as vigorously as he was in the morning session, but the wide receiver was still on the field and (presumably) still part of the PUP list.
•There were a few offensive highlights on the afternoon, with the first coming when wide receiver Brandon Tate made an impressive one-handed, over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone, coming down with a pass from Brian Hoyer in the end zone on a play that went for approximately 40 yards. (Hoyer also made a really nice connection with David Patten earlier in the same drill.)
•There were also plenty of defensive fireworks. In a pass coverage drill that matched up running backs on linebackers, Gary Guyton appeared to have little trouble swatting away a ball meant for Laurence Maroney, while running back Chris Taylor did a nice job of slipping past defensive end/linebacker Dane Fletcher. But the unquestioned highlight came when Kevin Faulk matched up against Jerod Mayo. Mayo first did a nice job stopping Faulk, but when the two matched up a second time, Mayo was draped all over the veteran running back and probably would have been called for holding. Faulk, suitably chagrined, engaged in a little trash talk, and decided that the two should go one more time. The two jumped back to the front of the line and Faulk then proceeded to make an incredible swim move on Mayo, leaving himself wide open and hauling in the pass. The back-and-forth between the two drew a big reaction from the fans at that end of the field.
•Another one of the high points came when the starting offense and starting defense went against each other in what appeared to be red zone drills, and Gary Guyton stepped in front of a Tom Brady pass and had a terrific angle toward the other goal line — given Guyton’s speed and his location on the field, it would have almost surely been six if he was taking it back in a real game.
•Tackle Sebastian Vollmer took a penalty lap early, while quarterback Zac Robinson and center Ryan Wendell took their second penalty lap in as many practices after another botched exchange.
•Defensive back Bret Lockett left the field about 1/3 of the way through practice with an unspecified injury. He did not return, but it certainly didn’t look like anything serious.
•On special teams, Tate, Julian Edelman and Taylor Price all worked as kick returners. (Price later suffered a bad drop on a pass from Hoyer.)
•Owner Robert Kraft was on the field for most of practice.
•At the end of practice, the players gathered to wish assistant coach Pepper Johnson a Happy Birthday, and afterward, defensive lineman Ty Warren dumped a bucket of Gatorade on Johnson’s head.
