Yea, he was truly great. He seems to be the kind of player who can do what Ty Law did, without the selfishness of course. I honestly hope he continues to grow as a player. He’s obviously got the talent and smarts to be one of the best corners in the league.

If so, I’m all for the right to religious freedom, however, as a descendant of both holocaust survivors and non-survivors, I find the comparison in very poor taste. The USA is based on freedom. Freedom of many things and one of those things is freedom of speech. Another is freedom of religion. I don’t really care if Tim Thomas visited the White House and I like the fact that he stands by his beliefs and did not let the “masses” persuade him otherwise. The quote he used was a perfect fit. He is using it to show that instead of turning a blind eye to governmental hypocrisy regarding these freedoms, he is standing up and chose to stay home for his causes.

We know right now that the decision by Tim Thomas to skip the White House photo-op had been a partisan political act — despite his words on Facebook to the contrary.  I didn’t believe those words then, and I certainly don’t believe them now.

Having said all that …  Tim Thomas is perfectly entitled to his partisan politics.  If he wants to make them public, then that’s fine with me, too.  I didn’t agree with Curt Schilling’s politics either.  But he had, and still has, every right to them, and to make them public, just like anyone else.

The only question, in my mind, is exactly how much the appropriate Super-PAC will be willing to pay Thomas for his upcoming 30-second commercial, which will most certainly be run in northern Michigan.  What will the issue be?  What will he say?

He certainly has the right in the US to say what he thinks and who am I to judge where he stands on things. I don’t agree with him, but the beauty of the US is that he has the right to say what he thinks whether people agree with him or not. While Martin Niemoller may have been referring to the taking over of Germany by the Nazi movement, Thomas is using it here as a way of comparing what happened there to what’s occurring here; a slow elimination of our individual and Constitutional rights. This is just a single example, and as proven by many comments here, it doesn’t effect them so they don’t care and are annoyed by the fact that Thomas is openly speaking against it. Well consider the fact that next may be our right to bear arms, or our right to due process…will you care then? It’s a ripple-effect and it starts small and by time people wake up and realize what’s going on, it’s usually too late.

However, if nothing else people should at least respect the fact that he’s standing up for his views, and voicing his opinion. People are entitled to their opinion and voice it every day and just because we don’t always agree with each other doesn’t mean we have to disrespect each other. not effect your love or respect for his skills as a goaltender, the

 He is mistaken. He says “Catholics” as in individuals. There are no individuals having their religious freedom suppressed in any way whatsoever. Offering access to contraception is not the same. They aren’t being told they need to use it themselves. The Institutions are using this attack so they can force their morals on others.

It’s not always inappropriate or unwarranted.  Thomas wasn’t equating Obama to Hitler, he was using the failure of people to stand up to Nazism as an example of how not to act in the face of an oppressive government. 
 
So by your logic we should draw no lessons from Nazi Germany?  We shouldn’t recognize that people did nothing in the face of evil and therefore make a concerted effort to not allow that to happen again? 
 
All Thomas did was confirm what Edmund Burke said “all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Do not allow evil to triumph. Do not do sit by and do nothing.”
 
Thomas was pointing out that he won’t be one of those good  men who did nothing to stop wrongdoing … it’s a lesson that’s appropriate.

Gregoire, you’re right, the individual is not being force to take it. However, the Catholic church is being  forced to offer it. Be it the individual, or the church, being force to offer something that clearly goes against their religious teaching is unconstitutional. If Jews were forced to offer non-kosher food because it would benefit the health of their children, would you not see that as over reaching by the Govt? It’s the same thing!

There are always many things we can always learn from the evils of Nazi Germany … mostly we can remind ourselves we have a real-live Constitution, and they never did …

So our man Tim Thomas, and others, need to wipe the foam, and relax.  We have a Constitution.  And no church is being required to do anything.  Our Constitution protects churches.

This department rule at issue here states that if there is a business — not a church — a business, that chooses to offer health insurance, then that business must offer a plan that includes access to birth control.  And of course, if the customer doesn’t want the birth control, the customer can turn down that part of the coverage.

The issue comes up when there is a business that is AFFILIATED with a church — such as Catholic-associated hospitals, or Catholic-associated insurance companies.  What some states with similar rules have done has been to allow the religious-affiliated business to “opt-out” of the rule, and instead require the business to simply refer the customer, to other insurance pools, that offer that kind of coverage, if the customer wants that coverage.

And that’s probably what will happen here at the end of the day … that is, after the politicians and pressure groups, on all sides of the issue, are done fund-raising off it …

Churches are excluded from the law.   The majority of companies with religious affiliation impacted by the law are hospitals, universities and schools.   It is an employment law, and regardless of religious affiliations, all businesses are subject to employment laws. It has nothing to do with constitution and freedom of religion.   A Catholic hospital is subject to things like overtime, safety and HIPPA laws just like a non Catholic hospital.   In an employer based healthcare system then healthcare is governed by employment law. Tim shouldn’t have skipped basic government classes at UVM, because this is not a constitutional argument.   You can argue that all companies have the right to impose their religious views in your employer based health care plan.   This is what the argument is.

Try again my friend … the mandate at issue requires the religious hospitals/institutions only to OFFER their EMPLOYEES a health plan that includes access to birth control.  
Birth control is not required to be PROVIDED by the hospitals/institutions to anyone, and this not about the PATIENTS.  It’s about the employees at these places.Now, if you think this very modest workplace insurance rule is still too much to stomach, then I understand all the way.  But that’s all the rule says.Let’s face it, the Catholic Bishops like to dump on Obama.  They got mad back when Notre Dame announced they would have Obama speak and receive an “honorary degree.”  They were mad because Obama is pro-choice, and the Catholic Church is pro-life.Okay, understood.But the Catholic Church is also against the Death Penalty.  And George W. If I worked at a catholic institution like Notre Dame, De Paul, etc., I would like to have the same benefits as offered to the rest of the country workers that do not work in a catholic hospital or university or even if I am a janitor at a religious institution.

That is all this is. Let us not follow the horrific example of the negligent Catholic Popes who have told Africans not to use condoms when much of Africa is engulfed in a AIDS epidemics.

Not all employees of catholic hospitals and universities are catholics. The law forces Catholic run businesses such as hospitals(being the main example) to provide free of charge in their insurance offerings free birth control access to their employees. Forcing them to pay to provide for something they feel is against their morals and a major part of the laws they follow goes against their right to freedom of religion no one is forcing anyone to take the pill but let me put it this way if you are personally morally opposed to heroin use for instance would would want to be forced to hafta offer heroin at your expense as a perk of being employed by you?

Ok I supprot Tim Thomas and his freedom to stand up and say what he thinks feels and believes. Seems I even agree with him on his stance. This is about freedom of religion.  Why should a Catholic hospital have the right to disallow any of its employees from using contraceptives?  This isn’t the gov’t telling Catholic hospitals to hand out contraceptives as many of you seem to believe.  It’s the government telling an employer to respect the beliefs of their employees (it just so happens that the employer in this case is the Catholic church).  If Tim Thomas REALLY cared about individuals and their freedoms, he would support the government telling all employers they can’t push their religious beliefs onto their employees!

Seriously, if the employer in this case was not the Catholic church, but rather MSNBC, which side of the argument would TT be on?  Remember, this is an employer stating they won’t pay for a portion of their employees health insurance because doing so goes against what they believe.  What’s next Tim?  Wal-Mart suddenly finds the writings of Mary Baker Eddy to be profound.  So profound, that they say they are now adamant followers of Christian Science. Christian Science, as some may know, shuns health care and feels that one’s belief in God will heal them.  That said, Wal-Mart states they will no longer pay for insurance for their employees because it goes against their religious beliefs.
