| Patriots by position: Quarterback | 01.27.11 at 1:28 pm ET |
As the Patriots offseason gets underway, we’ll present a snapshot of the team by position. We’ve already examined the defensive backs, the linebackers, the defensive line and special teams. Here’s a look at the quarterbacks:
On the roster: Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer. (Jonathan Crompton was on the practice squad at the end of the season.)
Stat standouts: Across the board it’s Brady, who finished the second-best season of his career (at least statistically) with 3,900 passing yards and a 66 percent completion rate, as well as 36 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Best single game: Brady had a bunch of great performances in 2010, but we’ll submit two: The first came against Detroit, when he was 21-for-27 for 341 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions and a perfect 158.3 passer rating. The second was against the Steelers, when he finished 30-for-43 for 350 yards, three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdowns and zero interceptions.
2010, in three sentences: Extraordinary. When it comes to his 16-game regular season, football historians can put Brady’s performance in a time capsule for future generations to admire, a performance made all the more impressive by the fact that the Patriots traded away their No. 1 receiver and No. 1 running back during the season. No wonder he’s the odds on favorite to win his second MVP when the winner is announced next month.
By the numbers — (courtesy of Nuggetpalooza): 102.6: Brady’s career red-zone passer rating of 102.6 is the highest since they began tracking the stat in 1991 (with a minimum of 300 red-zone attempts). Brady’s numbers are better than Steve Young (second at 100.2) and Kurt Warner (third overall at 99.0). In addition, Brady has been intercepted on just 1.1 percent of his red zone passing attempts, the lowest in the league since 1991.
Money quote: “There’s no better job in the word that I’d rather have, to do what I’m doing. That’s why I want to do it for a long time.” —Brady, shortly after signing a contract extension in September.
The skinny: Until the playoff loss to the Jets, Brady was having one of the best seasons of an already illustrious career. But in the postseason, he was less than his best — in the divisional playoff loss to the Jets, an early interception (his first since Oct. 17) seemed to rattle him, and the pressure (combined with zone coverage, something the Patriots clearly didn’t anticipate) gave Brady a hard time. Earlier this month, the quarterback underwent surgery on his right foot, which had reportedly been bothering him for much of the 2010 season. Brady, who will be 34 before the start of the 2011 season, is expected to be ready when training camp rolls around in July, but the foot certainly bears watching going forward. Hoyer remains a quality backup, but he is entering the final year of a three-year contract he inked as a rookie. Meanwhile, Crompton, a fifth-round pick of the Chargers in 2010, is finishing up his first season in New England. However, as they have done on several occasions in the past, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Patriots take a quarterback in the later rounds of the draft.
