The 49ers selected Missouri defensive end/outside linebacker Aldon Smith seventh overall. Smith declared for the draft after his sophomore season.

Manny Lawson hasn’t been the monster people expected him to be when the 49ers grabbed in the first round back in 2006. There is a bit of risk involved with Smith given that he could be perceived as a one-year wonder, but they’ll hope he pays off.
