Mike Vrabel: Lockout wasn’t reason for my retirement 07.13.11 at 2:12 pm ET
By

Mike Vrabel stepped off the football field and into labor negotiations and a new coaching career. (AP)

While doing everything he can to help end the NFL lockout, former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel wants everyone to know that the lockout wasn’t the reason he decided to end his pro career.

Vrabel told ESPN Radio Dallas that he made his decision to retire after the Chiefs lost at home in the playoffs to the Ravens in January. He also addressed his reactions to Bill Belichick‘s high praise of Vrabel and heading back to his alma mater of Ohio State to begin his coaching career as an assistant to Luke Fickell.

Would he have made the decision to retire had the NFL not been bogged down in a lockout this offseason?

“I thought in January when we lost to the Ravens that I had played my last down in the NFL. Whether the league resumed in March, I don’t know if I would have felt any better or any worse, but I’m comfortable with this decision. It’s certainly exciting, it’s a new challenge, it’s something that’s going to give me something to do and something I want to do.”

On the comments of Bill Belichick after Vrabel announced his retirement that Vrabel was one of the most important and integral members of the Pats’ locker room and bound to be a great coach one day:

“Well it’s humbling, it’s flattering. I think a lot of what I’m going to do and these these guys is going to come from Bill, it’s going sound like Bill, and hopefully if I can join that coaching tree of guys that have worked with Bill to go on to be great coaches either in college or in the NFL, hopefully I can be one of those guys.”

On what he can do to help clean up Ohio State’s football program:

“Well our compliance office is doing a great job educating our players and continuing to educate them. There’s weekly meetings. We’re not going take our frustration out on the guys on our team that are doing the right thing. It’s just not fair to those guys. I’m coming in, I told these guys they’ve got a clean slate with me on the field, off the field, we’re starting new and I’ll evaluate them on their performance from this day going forward. The head coach and the defensive coordinator may have other plans, but that’s what I told these guys when I met with them.”

How excited is he about the new coaching gig at his alma mater?

“I’m pumped I love it, I’m excited. I get up, come down here and watch film, and just starting to learn these guys. And it’s important to learn these guys on a personal basis because when we hit August and we hit camp, we can get moving.

Whether he’s still part of the negotiating process in the NFL Lockout and CBA proceedings despite announcing his retirment:

“I am still part of our executive committee by our by-laws being voted in. That role dimished a lot today with the accepting of this job. We’ve got guys that are negotiating; I was a part of that for a long time. And we’ve got a good group of guys on the executive committee that are going to be able to finish this thing off.”

Does he have a new, heightened interest in retired player benefits?

[Laughs]“They’re working like hell to make sure those guys are taken care of in the negotiating process.”

On how he’d characterize his transformation as a player and person today since he first entered the NFL well over a decade ago:

“Well I’m a lot different. I’m a father — I’ve got an 11-year old, I’ve got a 9-year old. I just think I’ve learned a lot; I know what bad football looks like, I’ve played plenty of bad football. I think I’m a little more understanding of when mistakes happen, and getting them corrected and moving on to the next play and just bring a positive energy and some excitement to these guys.”

Mike will be one of the good ones. He’s proven he can move to the top in one of the most important positions on defense. He’ll do the same thing in coaching.

  • zouki

Good luck Mike – one of the best and somebody the Pats could always count on!

  • Mark P.

You gotta believe a guy like Vrabel when he says the lockout isn’t why he is retiring from the NFL—> you wouldn’t go from the frying pan into the fire like that when the new dawn of the NFL is there on the horizon and OSU seems to be about ready to go into the toilet.
Stand up guy, thats all I have to say, even it is OSU-blech.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

With great pain I have to say the Habs are the better team. If they skated as hard in the second and third as the first it would have been a blow out. Our last two goals in six periods one off skate and one off black. We either lack the personnel to play Claude’s style or i’ll say it Claude has to go. Six on four game on line no shots I believe that shows the b’s do not plan or practice this scenario and that gets pinned on Claude and staff. Summer is comming fast boys!

  • Billy OB

Bruins played like a bunch of pus sies tonight. They better get it together soon or it will be a short playoff run.

  • fab4ever

And you’re an idiot idiot idiot. Great post…bet you waited all day to think that one up.

  • fab4ever

At this point in time, April 6th, the Habs are indeed the better team. Period. No excuses, no whining from B’s fans. We hate it but that’s the way it is. B’s can’t score, they don’t skate …it’s a simple recipe for failure in the NHL. Frankly, they’ll be fortunate to make it to a Finals with these efforts.

  • gman

Refs stole it again, that was a terrible call on Lucic!!

  • Linda Austin

What went wrong for the Bruins is they put 2 pucks in their own net and only 1 in the Canadiens goal. Never seen a team deflect so many pucks in their own net. Embarrassing
Oh wait even more embarrassing was the “power play” at the end of the game.
More convinced than ever this team will be offensively pathetic as long as Julien is coach.
Jagr on the 3rd line. Really Claude??? No Tim Thomas around to save your job this time around Coach.

  • Go b’sss

Milan Lucic is the poroblem with the bruins. His offensive game is horrible. He should be on the 4th line. His greatest asset is checking and fighting. He plays on the top line and has zero powerplay goals and only 5 total goals for the season…That is putrid. He has the worst hands on the team and can’t create his own shot as he skates with the puck. I wanna shut the tv off or puke when he is on the powerplay. Seguin who is the bruins best offensive player was sitting on the bench at the end of the game, while lucic was on the ice on a 6 on 4 powerplay. Neely should bench Claude for his stupidity in putting Lucic on the powerplay over Seguin. Plus Jagr should be playing on the 1st line with Kreji and kick Lucic down to the bottom line where he belongs!!!!!!

  • Titletown1

Wow, it’s a good thing the B’s got that goal scorer they desperately needed at the trade deadline.
Note to Marchand: the point of the game is to shoot the puck at the net, preferably past the goaltender, when you’re 5 feet from the net, on the powerplay, down by a goal, with seconds to go.
I’ve never seen a team pass up so many shots in order to make that extra, unnecessary pass and lose the scoring bid.

  • Troll Hunter

No excuses, the Canadiens have been the better team for the last two months. The Bruins continue to try and win games scoring 2 or fewer goals. It’s pretty telling when the Bruins had a 6-4 advantage for over 50 seconds and didn’t even get a shot on goal. I hate to say it but Julien needs to take the blame for them looking lost early on in there last couple of games against Montreal. Whenever Ferrence or Bartkowski are on the ice you almost have to hold your breath when the puck is in the defensive zone. Chara also looks slow and tired chasing quicker players. The Bruins again get caught retaliating and Lucic costs them another deflected goal off a Bruins’ stick. Let’s just hope Julien grows a set and drops down Horton the master of missing the wide open net.

  • Titletown1

Agreed. Lucic has stunk for most of the season. It’s like he’s going through the motions out there.

  • tom

they couldn’t score if there was nobody in net
the worst power play in the history of the NHL
    Luci sucks so bad

  • Troll Hunter

    So’s your Mom douch e……

  • cambee

they wont make it out of the first round at this rate.

  • Habsfan

Buy a better pair of glasses

  • Bruinman86

Lucic is a big problem, but far from being the main problem. Most of the guys are flat on that team. They get outworked and out hustled on most plays. They can only sustain pressure for a period. This is the same crap we went through with them last year. Personally I think a few guys should have been moved at the deadline. They need some speed. But for now, Lucic needs to be busted down a line or 2. See how he responds to that.

  • Bruinman86

Right on! Seems half hearted each night. Last year we blamed it on them being tired after a cup run and a strong first half. But maybe it was much deeper than that. A lack of consistant effort, few guys who can finish scoring plays and a lack of offensive creativity and a poor defensive effort has led us to this. They need to to move some guys in the offseason and fix this. Ship the lazy ones out. I also question whether or not Chara is starting to show his age.

  • Bruinman86

So are your parents for bringing a troll like you into the world.

  • Bruinman86

From what I saw, it wasn’t that bad of a call. besides, if the B’s had simply showed up with their A game, they could have won the game. But their uninspired play earned them the loss.

  • NYCBruinsFan

I agree Lucic needs to learn some discipline going to the box at the end of the first peroid and starting the second peroid in a PK is not the way to win goals, especailly with a stuipd second cross check when the guys down.

  • NYCBruinsFan

What happenned to Bruins hockey. Dump it in and hit them hard. Way too many give aways tonight. They had problems getting it out of their own end, never mind through center ice, of holding it at the blue line in theirs. Claude has to be pissed…. with a minute to go with a 6 on 4 and NO ONE takes a shot on goal. Come on now. We didn’t play like a first place team and that’s why we’re not in first place.

  • NYCBruinsFan

I agree about Chara, but what do you want, he has to be out on the ice so much because our forwards aren’t scoring goals and we need a stong defensivemen out there all night long.

  • NYCBruinsFan

You’re kidding right? Lucic needs to learn some discipline, With a minute to go in the peroid the last thing he should do is giving the other team a PP.

  • mike

fab4ever bruinman86 troll Hunter are a bunch of zero and they blo the bruins players BRUINS are a waste to hockey they suck

  • Chappy

The most amazing takeaway from this game is the lack of intensity the Bruins displayed. If you can’t get up for the Habs who can you get amped up to play? Someone on that coaching/mgt staff needs to figure out WTF is going with this team and their lack of “showing up” in these games – screaming at the TV for 2 1/2 hrs is starting to antagonize the neighbors….Claude may want to watch some Mike Rice tapes….

  • ChrisinDanvers

Tough game, but very endemic of what seems to be going on with the Bruins. The Bruins started hot and now seem to be pulling a Celtics….coasting to the finish. This team knows how to play harder and better; yet they just don’t seem to have that extra charge to do so, which is so unusual (but, not so surprising with a team that has been together so long).

There was no better place where this was seen than in the last minute plus, during that power play at the end of the game. Have no shot is one thing – unacceptable. But, the way they played, was as if they were all trying to set each other up for a better shot, or trying to play a game of “it’s not mine,” was just awful to watch.

Call it disinterest. Call it half-hearted effort. Call it uncertainty. One thing is for certain…this team can play better and should, once everyone is back. But they will have to step it up in the next few weeks, entering the playoffs.

  • Geetsolboy

The effort on that final power play was pathetic. Attack the net please! How can guys who play professional hockey execute a power play in the final minute as horribly as that?

  • glenn88

I think Horton is the bigger problem. His physical game is gone and he can’t finish like a first line sniper (another open net miss). At least Lucic still brings a physical game to the top line and batters d-men, just never developed into that complete player the Bruins thought he could be. Horton, unless he wants third line money he is gone after this year.

  • fab4ever

    It wouldn’t shock me either…

  • fab4ever

gman is either truly myopic or simply dumb. A bad call? Really? I think he was watching a college hockey game and not the B’s/Habs. I watched every second of the game, switching during commercials to watch the Final Four….I know what I saw…an excruciating performance by my B’s while getting their collective arses kicked by Montreal….yeah it was a sketchy call but please. The game wasn’t lost because of that call….

  • Anonymous

The most important part of the game is to put the puck in the net. The Bruins seem to do anything but shoot at the net. They do not control the center of the ice. They want to flip it down the side boards and hope it bounces right.
The Canadians set up in the middle and shoot shoot shoot. Plus the Bruins have stopped hitting.
    Need to change soon.

  • mike

The Bruins power play is consistently the worst i’ve ever see. 6 on 4 with a minute left zero shots on net!! Absolutely brutal.. Take that stiff Lucic off the pp he’s a bum. Half the Bruin’s losses this year are a result of this meathead’s stupid penalties. Shouod have shipped him off at the deadline.

  • mike

Couldn’t have said it better. Lucic is a hack with zero skill.. Ever watch him try to make a cross ice pass? It’s usually a 90 mph pass of the guys shin pads. Absolute bum.. Put me on the first line all year and I bet I have more than 5 goals. Not to mention his stupid penalties have cost us at least 5 wins and two straight vs the Habs.

  • mike

Why didn’t the B’s go after a scorer in the offseason? No let’s wait until the deadline and give something up. Well at least at this rate the Jagr trade will only be 2nd round pick.

  • NYCBruinsFan

While it disappoints me to admit it, I agree. Lucic isn’t even moving his feet. It’s painful to watch.

  • Bruinman86

I guess my point is that they should be looking for his replacement at some point in the next year. He’s no kid, and the advantage he has was quickness for his size (as well as reach) but if he is losing a step, he could quickly become a liability. For a guy making $6+ Million a year for the next 5 years I would doubt he’ll be worth anything near that by the end of the deal. I just think a smaller body type would have more longevity since it takes less energy to push it around. I would like to see them get a little younger. A 106 MPH slapshot is useless if it never finds the back of the net.

It would be more like pulling a Red Sox, except that they are becoming a team that is horrible from start to finish.

  • Dave In The Car

Marchand’s play has dropped off a cliff. Maybe he’s hurt?

  • gman

Why don’t you get your eyes checked? Plekanic should have been called for slashing Lucic right on the other end of the ref’s nose.

  • NYCBruinsFan

I think they are all thinking/hoping Dougie is his replacement, and while I love dearly our new 19 year old defenseman, he’s got a lot to learn yet. Too many simple give aways lately. I’m certain he’ll come along, but we need good puck moving guys at the blue line now

  • Bruinman86

Agreed. A long way to go. But the start of his career has been quite promising. They will still be looking at other D for the future.

  • wickswadecats

The Bruins must fire Claude Julien. He is incompetent. He was not responsible for the Bruins winning the Cup in 2011. Tim Thomas and the Bruins’ players won the Cup.
    Claude was lucky.

It is too bad Peter didn’t acquire Michael Ryder in trade. He was an important part of the 2011 Stanely Cup winning team.

As I see it, the problem with the Bruins is: Claude Julien, the GM and the owners. All teams
have injuries. the Penguins have more of them than do the Bruins. However, Pittsburgh
    never complains.

  • fab4ever

Bet you wouldn’t say this to our faces coward….

  • really_33
