ESPN’s Rich Cimini on The Big Show: Shaun Ellis doesn’t have ‘much left in the tank’

By

ESPN New York reporter Rich Cimini checked in with The Big Show Monday afternoon to talk about Shaun Ellis and Jets coach Rex Ryan. To hear the interview, click on the Big Show audio on demand page.

Cimini said that Ellis would best serve the Patriots as a reserve.

“I don’t think he can be a starter any more,” Cimini said, adding: “I don’t think he’s got that much left in the tank.”

The Jets were surprised by Ellis’ decision to play for the Patriots, Cimini said.

“They felt that if there was ever a guy who would finish his career with the Jets, it would be Shaun Ellis after 11 years,” Cimini said. Cimini also said the Jets understood that Ellis’ choice came after the Jets “lowballed him,” offering him a veteran’s minimum contract of $910,000.

Cimini called Ellis a good signing for the Patriots “because he’s versatile,” and said that Ellis would probably record 3-5 sacks while providing “veteran leadership off the bench.”

Cimini said that Ryan has become “basically the leader of the Jets.” He said that many of Ryan’s more pointedly anti-Patriots comments are “predetermined,” and not reflective of any real obsession with New England.

“Some of it is off-the-cuff, but some of it is totally orchestrated,” Cimini said. “He knows how to play the media. He’s very smart that way.”

Cimini, where is the back up beep beep noise when you need it? NY, Jeez.

Isn’t this the same Rich Cimini that most Jets fans feel is slightly better than a brain damaged drooling idiot? Good to see he feels Ellis has nothing left in the tank, perhaps he’ll remember that when Sanchez is planted by Ellis in Gillette.

What’s the guy suppose to say?!? The Penguins played their best game of
the series, on the road for that matter, and still lost. They got down
early and actually outplayed the Bruins for most of that game. That’s
why the Bruins need to come to play Friday and get the Penguins thinking
about packing it in for the year. The Penguins just have too much
talent to give any glimmer of hope to. After seeing them quit on Monday
you know if you can get them down early the game might be over. Bruins
could also do with the rest after Chara logging 42 minutes last night.

      One small quibble.

“They … actually outplayed the Bruins for most of that game.”

While the Penguins played their best game out did outplay the Bruins for large stretches … especially the third period … Pittsburgh did not outplay Boston for *most* of that game. Remember, the Bruins played a pretty good first period and held a one goal lead. Also remember, that both overtimes are part of the game as well and I thought the Bruins played their best in the OTs and frequently outplayed the Pens in the extended periods.

      • Troll Hunter

While the Bruins controlled the puck for long stretches of both O.T.’s, I thought the scoring chances were pretty even. As a matter of fact, I believe the shots were 15-15 combined. I stand by my original statement that the Bruins were outplayed for most of the game. Was it a huge margin, no.

  • Sportsbozo1

I wouldn’t expect him to think anything less! I also believe the Bruins will end it on Friday! I think they will sweep this series and then wait for an opponent from the west. Hopefully the Western series goes 7. Rest baby!! Nothing is better for a team going into the Cup finals.

  • JoeShmoe

This series will go at least six. Penguins are showing some life and the bruins hav issues closing teams out.

    • Troll Hunter

“Penguins are showing some life and the bruins hav issues closing teams out.”

Were they showing life before or after the Bruins won in O.T.? While I agree the Penguins played their best game of the series they still lost. Ask the Rangers if the Bruins have issues closing teams out. You also have to remember the Bruins have a chance to close at home.

I will never count the Pens out…but you gotta think that if the B’s come out Friday night and score early, it’s got to get into their heads…teams can mount miraculous comebacks, we know that. We’ve been on both sides of the fence. I read somewhere, some Pens fan was complaining about both the officiating and the bad breaks….well, the officiating has been OK in my book, nothing to write home about but they’ve done a good enough job…but to pee and moan about breaks? Both sides have had their share of hitting posts…and like I’ve said a zillion times, you don’t win anything if you do not have luck. Period. What coulda, shoulda been…I give you David Tyree. I give you Bucky Dent…IF those plays don’t happen, we win…that’s just the way it goes….you just pray that the luck continues to side with the B’s.

Dan Bylsma (if he were inspired by Father O’Flanagan from Airplane 2): I’m Dan Bylsma and I am a man of hockey. Therefore you must trust me when I tell you that we’re all likely going to lose. (Although instead of panicking they have no reaction and keep looking at the floor)

Listening to that, my ears began to bleed. Cliche after cliche thrown about like a man in an 8 foot dingy, in 40 foot waves, battling the flood with a Dixie cup.
The bruins can loose game 4 easily, but only if Claude, decides to outthink himself.
Stay with the chip and chase, Pittsburgh, is not designed to play that backward offense. Keep passing to the spot, nd trust your teammate can get there.,..
Beautifully portrayed in last nights game…

We’ve seen enough over the years to know that a 3-0 lead isn’t safe

  • me

He must me talking about faceoffs

  • grayesun

B’s Game 3 was their weakest, until OT…expect them to play better/tighter in Game 4 – don’t think the Pens can play any better than they did in Game 3…only hope Pens have is for Rask to have an “off” night.
