FOXBORO — An emotional Robert Kraft met with the media on the field at Gillette Stadium Wednesday, remembering his late wife Myra as “the real deal” and discussing the future of the Patriots.

One notable bit of information shared was that he was confident the team would sign two-time All-Pro guard Logan Mankins to a longterm extension. Kraft said the team planned carefully to lock up key members of the team including Tom Brady, Vince Wilfork and Stephen Gostkowski prior to the lockout and bring in other veterans on shorter deals in order to make it feasible to retain or add the players they desire.

“I hope that after locking up our core veterans and bringing in these seasons veterans as I call them, and probably you’ll see our good friend Logan Mankins will be signed up soon hopefully to be a Patriot for life,” Kraft said.

Though it hasn’t always been smooth between the Patriots and Mankins’ camp (he did not report to the team until Week last season over a contract dispute), Kraft said the team plans to keep the former 32nd overall pick around.

“If I have a vote it will get done,” Kraft said. “The other side’s got to want it too, but it’s our desire — it’s always been our desire — but… you can’t sign everyone you want, so you need to plan, and I think we did our planning knowing the kind of environment we were coming into, and we tried to position ourselves so we had our core veterans and we could continue to sign the people we want to sign. We very much — we think that Logan is among the best there is at his position. We drafted him and we want him. ”

Kraft also downplayed any hard feelings between Mankins and the team.

“All I know is any face-to-face discussions I’ve had [with him] or private discussions have all been positive,” Kraft said. “I just hope that he’ll be a Patriot long-term.”
