Individual sack totals are a misleading figure if taken by themselves. Sacks are are for the most part a group and coordinated effort by all the people rushing the quarterback. For example if one defensive linesmen requires a double team which creates a mismatch or a hole elsewhere for a rushing linebacker who sacks the quarterback, who had the most influence on the sack. The untouched linebacker or the double teamed defensive lineman? Plus they don’t give points for sacks. Only touchdowns, safeties and field goals. And the team with the most points wins all the time.

The Pats have a very good team as a whole. If they want to be a great team this year, they have to create more pressure on the QB. Ranked 24th in the NFL in sacks will not get the Pats very far in the post season. The post season teams with their efficent QB’s will score at will against a team that can not put consistent pressure on the QB. If the Pats are to become a serious threat in the post season, they need to be one of the top 12 teams in sacks. They have the offense that can out score any team, but lack a defense that can stop post season teams.

Hey RobDX, Sanchez sucks with the passing game and the 3 and outs against the Jets were not a shock. The three and outs in the first four games were very few. The better the QB the less three and outs. Sacks are important! They remind the QB that he is going to get hit. It affects his mental thinking going to the line and remembering the hit he just took. It forces the QB to make mistakes even if he is not about to get hit. QB’s that get sacked will hurry the pass and make more mistakes. Just ask Brady when he was getting sacked at will in the last post season game he played.
