What the addition of Brandon Lloyd means for the Patriots’ passing game 03.17.12 at 8:58 pm ET
By

Brandon Lloyd (AP)

The addition of wide receiver Brandon Lloyd helps the Patriots’ passing game on a number of levels: it provides quarterback Tom Brady with another option outside the numbers, the receiving corps gets slightly younger, and it gives the New England offense something it has been missing since Jabar Gaffney left following the 2008 season — another pass catcher who is not a tight end who can be counted on for 50 or so receptions a season.

The 30-year-old Lloyd, who has averaged 74 catches a season the last two years, has been connected to the Patriots throughout the free agent process for several reasons, not the least of which included his well-known fondness for Josh McDaniels, the New England offensive coordinator who had worked with Lloyd in Denver and St. Louis.

McDaniels helped turn Lloyd the 6-foot, 188-pound receiver from a statistical JAG who never topped 30 receptions over the first seven seasons of his career into a stud who has averaged 74 catches a season the last two years. In all, with McDaniels as the St. Louis offensive coordinator, Lloyd had 51 catches for 683 yards and five touchdowns last year in 11 games with the Rams. That’s on the heels of 77 catches for 1,448 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2010 with Denver, a portion of which happened in McDaniels’ final season as head coach of the Broncos. (McDaniels coached 12 games that year in Denver.)

It’s not just as a deep threat — Lloyd represents a serious upgrade across the board for the New England passing game. Per the chart that was whipped up by Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus (left), Lloyd’s numbers in both the intermediate and deep routes the last two seasons are impressive, and will provide a serious boost to the Patriots’ offense.

Last season, the Patriots ran lots of sets with two tight ends and two receivers, and so with Lloyd in the fold, it will be interesting to see how the Patriots approach negotiations with veteran free agent wide receiver Deion Branch, another outside option. In addition, veteran Chad Ochocinco is another wideout who faces an uncertain future now that Lloyd is on the roster.

Regardless of what other personnel moves the club makes going forward, Lloyd projects as one of two outside receivers for the Patriots in 2012, and his ability as a deep threat will only serve to help fellow receivers Branch (if he does return) and Wes Welker (and if he is healthy, newcomer Anthony Gonzalez). Tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez also figure to benefit on short and intermediate routes when it comes to the inclusion of Lloyd.

    Like the signing. Short money

  • JoeFla

When the music stops, someone is not going to have a position on offense. The Patriots will certainly draft at least one receiver.

  • Aashish1989

At first I was kind of lukewarm towards this signing..I was more attracted to Mike Wallace (sexier name byfar) and Lloyd’s career numbers didn’t really blow me away..But the more I think about it this signing makes sense..He will fit McDaniel’s system given the two’s history, he can be a legitimate deep threat and not even have to be the first, second, or even third option, and most importantly, he’s relatively cheap. Wallace would have demanded a monster contract..This is a good move by the Pats..

  • Nopepr

77 catches and 51 catches is an average of 64 catches the past two years not 74.  Nice math WEEI.

  • Nopepr

this is anoter crap signing, underwhelmed. mike wallace would have been a great signing butthem we passed on him for Brandon Tate already.  Sorry we the pats should have 5-6 rings by now the player personel picks and lickups are crap.  Bill needs a voice that will contradict him.

  • Yeah50

He only played 11 games in St Louis. He played the first 5 games of the season in Denver.

  • PETERFERREIRA20

    DUMB DUMB,
77 CACHES THE LAST 2 YEARS, AND 51 CATCHES IN ST LOUIS .
    3 YEARS
    ADD 77 + 77 + 51= 201  / 3 = 68.3 CATCHES PER YEAR!

  • PETERFERREIRA20

= 205 /3 = 68.3 , TYPE O,ERROR, SORRY, MATH IS RIGHT, SHIFT KEY ON + AND = SIGN SCREWING ME UP. LOL

  • Hesher

Blah blah blah, Go be a fan of the rams or seahawks or something, This was a very good signing and your blind as a bat if you can’t see it.

  • Stickem43

These signings really bring into question whether or not BB picks up a WR in the draft. Maybe his difficulties picking quality WRs over the past several years have convinced him the FA way is safer at the position. That’s OK because I’d rather see them focus on the D during this draft anyways.

  • glenn88

I bet they add 1 big deep threat receiver in the draft.  They still don’t have that elite down field threat.  Either Hill (6’5) from GT or Alshon Jeffrey (6″4) from SC would be a nice pick with their 2nd choice in the draft.  Teams would have serious match up problems if you have Welker, Lloyd and the big guy next to the two tight ends.

Draft is deep through the first three rounds, so they can still address the pass rush with the other picks.   They can get interior and outside rushers like Crick from Nebraska or McClennan from Boise with the 2 second round picks.

  • pats #1

are you stupid ? i mean like reallly ? you make no sense brandon lloyd is a GREAT signingg now we got the deep threattt we neeed ! it aint a crap signing ya damn troll ! and btw last year on a really BADDD rams team he caught 51 passes for 683 yards and five touchdowns. thats actually reallly goood imagine what he can do with an elite qb in tom bradyy so before u say crap signing check ur damn facts!

  • tj

i agree….just look at the contract 3yrs at 12mil that is cheep….good signing by the pats…and also getting gonzalez as depth it was a good weekend..

  • sev

all of 2011 he had 70 catches…all of 2010 he had 77 catches….don’t know why your adding 77+77+ 51…  more like 70+ 77=147/2= 73.5 average(they rounded up to 74)  just go check out his career stats because you seem to be confused to….

  • BG83

He caught 77 and 70…read, he caught 51 for STL and 19 in Den last season. The prior season he caught 77, which avgs out to be 74

  • Benny

I like Wallace too, but let me give you their stats from the lat two years..Wallace had 60 catches for 1257 yds and 10 tds in 2010 compared to Lloyd’s 77 catches for 1448 yds and 11 tds.. In 2011 Llyod had 70 catches for 966 yds and 5 tds compared to Wallace who had 72 catches for 1193 yds and 8 tds.  Lloyd had noone throwing him the ball in both seasons in Denver, and its fair to say Sam Bradford has been a disappointment so far too.  Wallace has a pretty good QB throwing him the ball…Their numbers over the last two years are almost identical!!  I think Wallace has a bit more speed, but you have to account for Lloyds knowledge of Mcdaniels offense.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have them both huh??  Defenses won’t be able to cover everyone, so there will be a lot of open guys fo Brady, and we all know Brady will hit them!!  Freakish numbers this year for Brady and the offense, similar to 2007 I hope!!

  • Benny

Crap signing??  Are you high??  Lloyd was the top receiver in the NFL in 2010, and was solid again last year, even though he had NO QUARTERBACK!!!  You don’t know crap!!!  Your just another pinky, that wants to sell the farm to sign Wallace, even though Lloyd the exact same numbers as Wallace over the last two seasons, playing on crappy team!!  Wallace for some reason will command 1.5-2 million more per year, and a 1st round pick!!  First round picks aren’t something you jst give away in the NFL!!! Go back to your World of Warcraft game…

Hey sorry, but your a little off too my friend…Lloyd had 77 in 2010 and 70 between Denver and S tLouis last year……

  • PATS SPEND MONEY 2012

good signing,  NOW GO AFTER  MIKE WALLACE. GET RID OF CHAD AND BRANCH. DRAFT ALL ON DEFENSE. I ALSO LIKE ANTHONY GONZALEZ GOOD 4TH W.R.

  • Hesher

Highly unlikely Lloyd underachieves like Ochocinco, Lloyd already knows Mcdaniels offense, and that’s the problem Ochocinco had was he was too stupid to figure it out. Belichick wouldn’t have just gave him a 3 year contract if he had a bunch of doubts about if he could learn the offense if he would be productive, Mcdaniels is going to make sure he’s productive.

  • McGinest55

The 51 catches were JUST with St. Louis after he was traded to the Rams. He already had 20 with the Broncos that year.

I’ve been a fan of the patriots for three whole decades now. What happened in that superbowl was the result of a team that was struck by a crucial injury at the worst possibly time. I have no doubt that Tom Brady is the QB who should lead NE for the next five years or beyond.

What bothers me is doubt creeping into Tom Brady’s head.

He is clearly one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. But he was absolutely savaged after that loss by the media and NY fans. His wife was subjected to unfair criticism(she was right it was wes fault he f*cked up BIGTIME Deon branch in his prime would have made that catch) and i fear that he could be… Hurt by that loss. I don’t know how he will respond emotionally. I really hope he can come back and show some magic but losing to that team the way he did… I must admit it kind of bothers me.

I always said i have never seen a competitor like him inside football. But losing big games can become emotional death. They are so hard to get to and to lose them i don’t know what TB is thinking now but i know it is emotionally tearing him apart… The closest comparison i can think of at this point in his career is jim kelly. He had the heart of a champion. He was a QB who seemed to always be in the right place at the right time but when it came to the SB’s the football gods conspired against him and eventually got in his head. Over time his passion just slowly faded.Believe me i am not hedging I will still go into this season and bet the farm that he will bring us to the promise land once again and right the ship. Because i have unwavering faith in Tom Brady and Bill B. I just hope Tom hasn’t lost faith in himself.

He has the tools. He now has the weapons. He’s got a 1-2 combo at tight end and a 1-2 combo at wide out that could make this the most devastating foursome in offensive history. The only thing standing between us and number 4 is no longer Peyton and the Indy colts. That story is closed and now a part of history. The only thing standing in front of us now is Tom Brady and either a repeating juggernaut in the NY GIANTS or a vengeful GREEN BAY PACKER team that is bidding it’s time and waiting to meet who ever the AFC contender is and destroy them.

The question is will Brady be ready for that challenge or will he be emotionally spent? Will his receivers respond to the challenge this time? Will the defense be better?

In my humble opinion sports fans this could go one of two ways…

This is either a superbowl revenge tour rivaling or besting 07. Or this is the the end of Tom Brady.

By week 9 we will know. We will all know.

Bring back Branch, let Ochocinco go.

The Pats agreement with Daniels Fells

  • Giz83

Total for 2011 was 70 catches
                                          Catches – Yards
    2011     St. Louis Rams     51     683
    2011     Denver Broncos     19     283

    2010     Denver Broncos     77     1,448

Good post Zeta. These are concerns I have had since the 07 SB loss. He most definately will have the weapons this year. Now lets sign a shut down corner and a better than average RB.

  • Gnarwrecker

he had 70 catches last year. 51 with St. Louis. 73.5 average … 74

    RB ? ..Tim Tebow

    New England Patriots

In addition to bringing back Tebow’s former coach in Denver, Josh McDaniels, as their offensive coordinator, they also brought in two former Broncos receivers, wideout Brandon Lloyd and tight end Daniel Fells. Although McDaniels’ passing game is in excellent hands as he reunites with Tom Brady, Tebow’s versatility would be appealing for special rushing packages.

There’s a good chance the Patriots will need to replace their best red zone runner from a year ago, free agent BenJarvus Green-Ellis. New England is one of the league’s most innovative offensive teams, and Tebow would serve it nicely as a physical fullback type or Wildcat QB near the goal line.

ATX you took the words right out of my mouth bro.

If we can get a running back. A power running game we’d be unstoppable because when the pass doesn’t work, we can pull the ball down and morph from finesse into power. Granted no team in history has ever done that. The closest is the Dallas cowboys of the 90′s but if the patriots could get more production out of the RB position we’d be an absolute “nightmare” to defend. The problem is to get that kind of power attack we need a better than average offensive line. This line will not do it. We need bigger stronger linemen. We have one who didn’t see playing time last year a 300+ behemoth who could be what the doctor ordered. I forget his name but this guy is BIG. I think he is over 350. I’m not sure i’ll have to do some research.

Also you are 110% right a shut down corner is crucial…Ras-I Dowling could be the number 2 if he doesn’t have a set back.  We also need a hard hitting safety, that could be chung but we need more intimidation from him. We need a Bob sanders type of transformation.

However,  What we need most on defense is an outside linebacker. Too many big plays occurred last year because QB’s were given 6-12 seconds to complete passes. We need blitzers. Men who can annihilate the QB. We need to get a hard nosed defense that can kill QB’s. Spikes and Mayo are great. But we need a new Mcginest.

The defense showed a little of what it could do in the SB by beating the heck out of the GIANTS receivers. We need to take it to the next level.

As of Monday 10:31 p.m. march 19, 2012 these are the most glaring needs.

    1. Offensive lineman
    2. Power running back.
    3. Outside linebacker
    4. CB

  • Brady

Bro this isn’t mighty morphin power rangers, there will be none of that nonsense.

  • Recordscratch

with the additions of Jabar and Lloyd, Branch will be better.  he’s slowed down with age and at this point should be playing 30 percent of snaps not 80 percent.  We’ll see better production out of Branch this year (though last year was nothing to complain about).  The new WRs and with receiving RBs like Vereen and Addai the entire offense will improve.
