Oh come on Alex, only mentioning his 09-10 ERA with no context?  Really?  You’re better than that.  He outpitched his peripherals at an unsustainable rate, he had pedestrian K & BB rates, and over almost 400 big league innings he’s been a replacement level pitcher in the NL Central.  I mean I get it, it’s a depth move, but you don’t need to search for the silver lining best case scenario in every move.  It’s obnoxious to hear the rest of the Boston media lose all perspective and criticize moves with no context, but it’s almost more annoying to read this type of fluff from the only good Boston baseball reporter.  Even when healthy, he’s been the definition of a #5 starter on a noncontender, and that’s while getting good luck.

I’ve a feeling the Red Sox may be intrigued by more than just his pitching. He’s a first-rate baseball mind, whose thesis at Princeton was an economic analysis of draft bonuses. If we’ve learned one thing this off-season, executive talent is remarkably underrated. Perhaps this is a new kind of moneyball….
