POLL: Will 2012 be Wes Welker’s last year with the Patriots? 07.16.12 at 4:32 pm ET
By

Per multiple reports, the Patriots and Wes Welker have not been able to reach an agreement on a long-term deal before the Monday deadline, and the receiver will now play out the 2012 season under his franchise tag of roughly $9.5 million.

Welker was hit with the franchise tag this spring, and under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, the two sides had until Monday at 4 p.m. to reach an agreement on a long-term deal. However, the player and team were unable to come to an accord, which means they are prohibited from talking about a deal beyond 2012 until after the season.

Do you think Wes Welker be with the Patriots beyond the 2012 season?

I voted No. By the start of the 2013 NFL season, he will be 32 and the likelihood of his numbers staying the same or improving are slim, especially after all the abuse his body as absorbed catching so many passes.

I think if he wants to see a championship, he should take less money and stay, but you cannot blame him if someone else ponies up a small fortune for him. If he goes somewhere else, he won’t have the timing or the luxury of working with the best of this generation in TB12.

We should just enjoy him in 2012 and hope that the Pats can back to the Big Game and Wes could be the hero this time. He’s earned that for the team.. Just remember this is a business and pro football players are in the business of getting as much money as possible in a very short time span. Right now, Wes will have the same fate as Asante Samuel. It is the one ball in the Super Bowl that you do not let go through your hands that gets you paid with the Patriots. But, unlike Asante who was tagged in 2007, Wes gets one more chance.

Remember, the Patriots can and probably will franchise Wes Welker again if he has another career year. But if he starts slowing down, he’ll be asked to take a pay cut instead.

I mean, If it comes down to a 23 year old Aaron Hernandez or a 32 year old Wes Welker, I choose Hernandez… I love wes, but you’d think the guy would’ve learned from the Randy Moss situation from 2 years ago.

they will probably use the tag for 2013 on Hernandez, because his agent has already state he wants wide receiver money
