The Patriots officially announced the signing of first-round pick Dont’a Hightower on Thursday. Here’s the complete transcript of the release from the team:

The New England Patriots announced the signing of first-round draft choice LB Dont’a Hightower today. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Hightower, 22, was selected by the Patriots with the 25th pick overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-3 inch, 270-pound linebacker from Alabama was a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik, Butkus and Lombardi Awards as well as a consensus All-American and a unanimous All-SEC first-team selection in 2011. Hightower started 42 of 44 games at Alabama and registered 234 total tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumbles recovered, seven passes defensed, one interception and one blocked field goal.

After starting in 12 of 14 games as a true freshman in 2008, Hightower was granted a medical redshirt year in 2009 after being limited to just four games due to injury. He started all 13 games in 2010 and again in 2011. Last season, he led the team with a career-high 85 total tackles.

This is another totally a media created issue. WEEI needs to create controversey … that’s why Dennis asked Valentine how he manages to refrain from making comments like Ozzie, givien how outspoken & opinionated he is. How could anyone be some so mindless to ask that question, and then criticise him for not answering?

  • Jack

Media created – really? Your manager says a player isn’t playing hard and that is a media created issue? I thought hiring V was a good move because Francoma needed to go but now I have my doubts. It is a major problem when you have a manager with a serious case of verbal diarrhea. You just win 3 straight against a good Tampa Bay team and you pick then to make inane comments? Also the comments by Petey make it clear Schilling was right when he said these players think V is a joke. This whole thing is going to blowup and V probably gets canned before Labor Day. Good thing they only gave him a 2 year contract – easy to cut bait with him if he proves to be an incompetent buffoon.

    • Chickey19

How long did it take last season to win 4 games? I believe someone else was at the helm.
I also believe a portion of his team walked all over him last year.
Keep your shirt on and relax. By the way, your Schilling comment confirms you’re an EEI
      swab!

      • Charc327

i was being sarcastic ,saying it was ok , thye players thiought it was Ok, not me!

        • Charc327

oh sorry , i didnt see you were replying to jack, my bad

      • JCMASS

Did it ever occur to you that there were serious problems with last year’s team, and ask WHY those problems existed? Do you think Francona, winner of TWO World Series Titles suddenly forgot how to manage?

Consider that in the two previous seasons, Francona lost two key members of his coaching staff. One left to become the manager of the Houston Astros, and, more critically, John Farrell left to become manager of the Toronto Blue Jays.

We all saw what Bard was capable of during that stretch when he gave up no runs. And then all of a sudden he fell apart. My guess is that there was a mechanical problem, something Farrell was VERY good at spotting and correcting.

Had he been here, I doubt very much April and September would have been so bad. And it is not like their competitors did much better. The Sox missed the playoffs by a single game, and both the Rays and Yankees were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Don’t forget, the Patriots haven’t won a Superbowl since Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel left the team. I haven’t seen calls to run Belichick out of town.

What had Bobby Valentine ever won?

    • Bgilman66

Valentine isnt the problem … Youkelis is and always has been….. he blabbed to Schilling … he whizzed all over Ellsbury when he was hurt a couple of years ago …. and now his protector, Francona, is gone and he’s going to pout… He should have been traded in the off season.

      • redsox101

Why is everyone hating on youk!! He is one of the big faces of the franchise right now. He played very well in 2010, only had a bad year last year because he had several injuries!( Not his fault!). Let’s not for get the fact that he gave up being a gold glove first baseman to play third when Gonzalez came. Youkilis is a solid player, not a poisonous threat to the locker room!!!

  • Geetsolboy

He wasn’t thinking, that’s the problem. Valentine is not as smart as he’d like you believe. He stumbles when he talks all the time. Did you ever watch him on ESPN?

  • Charc327

he never said youk wasnt playing hard ,thats #1. #2 When the players went to the media a.k.a SCHILLING and criticized the manager it was ok. Now when the role is reversed ,they are all up in arms ,PREMADONNAS !!

    • Conrad Bradburn

I’m glad you can spell correctly. I didn’t realize all these Sox players were before Madonna. Perhaps the high school GED didn’t properly teach you that the expression is PRIMA DONNA! Go back to working at Boston Sand & Gravel with Doug McCray loser.

  • Tim R

Youkilis comments about Ellsbury were far more poisonous than the rather gentle observations of Bobby Valentine concerning Youk. Go back and read what Bobby V actually said. Hardly biting criticism. The media is spinning it out of control as they usually do.. These players are so used to having Francona wipe their soiled bums that they don’t know what to do with Valentine.
    I LOVE IT!!!

    • JCMASS

You may not love it so much if this spirals out of control. For some reason everyone thinks Francona never disciplined his players. He did, but he kept everything in house, which the players respected.

You know who else operates that way? Bill Belichick. He handles problems with players behind closed doors, not with the media.

Joe Torre was the same way. And in today’s world, it is really the only way a manager or coach is going to make things work.

    • JCMASS

See how you like it at the end of the season. This is the way Valentine has ALWAYS operated as a manager, and it does not work that well in the modern world of guaranteed contracts. It is why he hadn’t had a job since the Mets, and the only reason the Sox hired him was because of the way they handled Francona, who, after all, only won TWO World Series. No other candidate wanted to go near the Red Sox after that, because they would constantly be wondering what they would have to do to keep their job.

Bill Belichick does not use the media to criticize players, just as Francona never did. Yet both have been FAR more successful than Bobby Valentine.

      I wonder why that is.

  • Bgilman66

Youkelis and the whiny players are the problem…. not Valentine. and I’m guessing John Dennis was right, it was Youkelis that blabbed to Schilling. Here’s the deal — Francona is gone and now someone will call you out when you are a cancer in the lockerroom or dogging it on the field. And Pedroia — shut up and play. Your cribbage buddy aint coming back.

  • smokeshow611

Sorry, but if you are making $14mil a season, and you are not producing, I have no problem whatsoever with anything that needs to be done to get these players to produce.  They are not paid for EFFORT they are paid for RESULTS.  If you don’t PRODUCE, then you are subject to scrutiny. Sorry, that is the way it is, and if you don’t like it, don’t accept millions of dollars to play a GAME!  I applaud Bobby V, we don’t know the intimate details of what happened last season, and I agree 100% that Youk is not emotionally engaged…he is usually a fireplug of emotion, and has been blaise all spring and so far this year.

    • Relax

You applaud Bobby V?  Great, then you can have him.  He’s a horrible manager.  But, you missed the point of the article.  He’s not scrutinizing Youk for lack of results, he’s saying that he’s not putting the effort in.  If he said, “I think we all realize that Kevin is on the downside of his career” then you would be right.  It would still be stupid to say, but you’d be right.

You guys can all hate Francona as much as you want.  But he would never had done something this stupid, and we’re only a week and a half into the season.  You can hate on Youk all you want, but he puts in as much or more effort than anyone in the game.  If Valentine had said this about Trot Nixon you all would have exploded.  And Nixon never produced the way Youk has.

    • JCMASS

You may be satisfied to see a team managed via the media, but I know of few teams who have ever won a title this way. What has Bobby Valentine ever won?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ZVFM2HRNC5CTO2OUXD4XTX65O4 Dennis

Yeah, Pedroia “has his back.”  What’s this sawed off loudmouth think this is, the “hood.” If I’m Bobby V, I’m keeping score on every single player—something Francona should have done.

    • Relax

Yeah, because only people in the “hood” have each others back.  And keeping score on every player is what will get Valentine bounced out of Boston.  Francona should have coached this team to 2 championships…oh wait, he did that.

    • JCMASS

Francona == 2 World Series Titles.

Valentine == 0 World Series Titles.

  • Boston Fan

This is not a media-fabricated story, but I’m pretty sure Kirk Minihane has a press pass and can ask these questions to Bobby V directly.  So let’s see if he nuts up and does it.  Otherwise he’s just a flamethrower with no guts.

  • Dghostla

    Francona come back

  • AndyP

Media created, manager enabled, media perpetuated.

  • Johnny Spygate

Maybe your boy Bobby V can explain himself better to the New York market when he does his radio show down there after today’s loss.

I think Bard just waled another guy and he’s not even in the game.

  • Mike

My guess here is that Valentine got orders from above. Youk is super popular with the fans and one of the few guys that people are probably still feeling a bond with. He and Pedroia are the heart of the team. My guess is, for whatever reason, ownership and management are looking to trade Youk before losing him to free agency and like they have done with everyone else they have disposed of are going to make it look like there were all kinds of reasons to do so. It just seems like this time they are starting even before the player is moved. Hope it backfiires on them and it lowers what they can get for him!!!!!

  • Anonymous

It’s a thoughtful article.  Bobby V is a brilliant manager and a thoughtful speaker, believe it or not. He didn’t mean to say something that sounded so severe but at the same time he sees Youk on the decline and I don’t think he wants to surprise Youk or the public when Youk starts sitting.

    • Anonymous

What! He doesn’t want to “Surprise Youk and the public when he sits him”? Oh! so let’s Surprise everyone by making a stupid comment about the guys emotional state? C’mon, your kidding me right.  A “brilliant manager and a thoughtful speaker”!  Who have you’ve read or listened too in the intelligence community? Not too many people if you think this jerk is “Smart” or has any people skills. He couldn’t even back peddle out of his comments because he didn’t know what he was talking about in the first place. Go read a book on something other than sports, there you will find brilliance and insight.

  • Bobby is Boss

“To me it’s unacceptable,” Ross said. “If I’m up there striking out every at-bat, I’m going to get benched.”  That’s the right attitude.  Some actual concern about what your manager thinks.

  • Bobmezz

    Get Youk out of here

  • Bríain

Cry me a river Youkilis, everyone has to listen to harsh criticism at work if they are not performing as they should. Find another job if it’s too much for you to handle.

  • Anonymous

Youk not playing well has nothing to do with Bobby V calling out a players emotions when he doesn’t even know him all that well. Boobby V was wrong and he knows it, that’s why he apologized. I’m glad Peedy had Youk’s back, Schill said Youk works harder than any one player he’s ever seen, I’ll go with the players before this stumbling fool of a coach.

  • ignorethemedia

What’s this have to do with winning the world series this year?  Who runs this team on the field.
The manager, the players or the media?  The mistake the manager made was answering the question to begin with in the first place. He apologized and hopefully he is learning how the Boston media can kill their own team with negativism.  Now I know how ted Williams felt.   This is a nothing story designed to try and cause dissension.

The definition of “bad karma” is Bobby Valentine. Now get rid of him.

PS- We got your back, Youk!

  • LT

I was wondering why youklis wasn’t the same myself – bad numbers, no walks, he was an obp machine a couple years ago, he even looks smaller. But I don’t think ts right calling youklis out like that. Take him in the office and talk to him, I wouldn’t want a boss blurting my performance like that without calling me out in private. Do other managers/coaches do that? I never hear belichick say anyhing bad about anyone ever period. Not about his players or other teams or other coaches no one. BBs only concern is winning. And he tells the media only what he wants to tell them. Francona never threw anyone under the bus either.

Bobby Vs comments did seem weird. He is the boss but throwing someone under the bus isn’t good in my book whether or not that’s what he meant to do. It seemed like a thoughtless comment on BVs part. But is BV here to win games or to entertain the media? I want games won. And questioning a player in public may not be the best
way. But what the hell do I know it’s just my opinion and obviously we all have them.

  • MelParnell

Why are you assuming he was thinking? Bobby V. is talk first, think second and has always been that way. He is a disgrace for a professional baseball manager.

  • Moneyball

It’s time for a housecleaning.  Youk has been a very good player for many years.  He’s deserving of respect and appreciation for his contributions and efforts.  But baseball, more than any other professional sport, is about what have you done for me lately.  If, like many aging athletes, he’s having difficulty accepting the decline in his skills and the imminent end to a successful career and is pouting in the clubhouse, he deserves to be called out by the manager.   Baseball players are often criticized for their sense of entitlement.  I don’t blame them for getting all they can, but the flip side of that coin is that you have to produce to get it.

  • Anonymous

Once again we have a media creation of a problem. There was no issue with what Bobby V said. He answered a question like an observation. I’m a huge Peetie fan but if he wants to defend his teamate, don’t do it in the nitwit media. Walk into Valentines office and man up. What Pedroia did was worse and only elevates it. I expect Peetie to apologize to Valentine. Pedroia is lucky the likes of Dick WIlliams isn’t around anymore. Valentines has done a good job since being here and the media can’t deal with being wrong AGAIN and won’t give him a break! They did the same to Francona at the start (remember FranCOMA references). It is just these bunch of never played ball sports writers that are trying to create something. When was the last time you seen the sox play heads up in the field (like Avilia’s play Sunday) and on the bases. That’s where you win games.

  • Basil

There is a reason Bobby hasnt coached in the majors since the Mets. He pulles this same act there. I have no problem pulling a guy aside and griping and much of Youks struggles are his declining career and if we move on from youk i will thank him for his efforts no one plays harder or holds himself more accountable for his performance. I didnt like the Bobby V signing and still dont. This guy will continue to call out his players publicly. As far as Pedie goes he did exactly what a leader should do stand up for his team mate and if Bobby is going handle this publicly he is telling his team it is fine to do the same. If the Sox succeed it will be inspiteor Bobby not because of him. Last point is Bobby knew exactly what he was saying and his the way he spoke he implied that youk wasnt trying. Media didnt overblow this they just ran with it.

  • C.Trotman Nixon fan for life

Minihane, I’m disappointed you’d compare Youk to Drew when looking at games played from 2009-2011.  Everyone knows that Drew would sit out a game if it was RUMORED he was gonna catch a cold, whereas you’d practically have to restrain Youk from taking the field with an injury.  I’m sure the comparison was made because no other players numbers would match up, but still, to compare a player who many have compared to the “Dirt Dogs” of old to a player that at more than one point in time in this city was called “Nancy Drew” is almost insulting.
