Patriots-Saints will be faced with replacement refs on Thursday 08.08.12 at 1:41 pm ET
By

FOXBORO — Like the rest of the league, the Patriots and Saints will have a crew of replacement referees for Thursday night’s preseason game at Gillette. According to information distributed by the Patriots on Wednesday, the officiating crew is as follows: David White (referee), Mike Hannon (umpire), Ed Schmid (head linesman), Alvin Thomas (line judge), Keith Norman (field judge), Barry Wilson (side judge), Peter Shafer (back judge), Bob Shoulders (alternate), Carl Madsen (replay), Eugene Cunningham (video), Johnny Grier (supervisor), John Schleyer (observer).

While it’s tougher to find information on the professional tendencies of the replacement crews than it is with the regular guys, according to Football Zebras, White served as a head linesman in the Midwest Conference (Div. III) in 2011.

Hey, who can blame him? It’s not like Ellsbury had a recent history of missing almost an entire season after a serious injury or anything.

    Oh, wait a minute.

Those are some weird comments about the Ellsbury injury.  Valentine seems to really like blaming himself for stuff, but what exactly is he kicking himself about?  The outfielders and Aviles as leadoff have worked out great so far, so I don’t know what else the manager is supposed to do without Ellsbury.  Contingency plans for injuries (especially for a position player) are much more the GM’s job.  There isn’t a whole lot of planning for the manager; he just does his best with the 25 man roster he is given.  The Bailey/Melancon self-blame makes sense, since the bullpen has been bad.  Valentine has made lots of strategic mistakes there, along with general under-performance (most of which isn’t his fault).  I guess it is just his style to say everything is his fault.
