Bill Parcells: This Patriots team is better than 2011 edition 11.12.12 at 11:41 pm ET

Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells go back a long way, and Parcells believes that Belichick has this New England team well prepared for the stretch run. (AP)

Bill Parcells has faith.

The former Patriots coach said Monday that despite any struggles New England has faced over the course of the first nine games of the season — particularly on the defensive side of the ball — he believes this year’s Patriots’ team is better than the one that came up just short against the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI in all three phases of the game.

And he’s told Bill Belichick that on several occasions.

“I do communicate with Bill sometimes during the year — usually via text, occasionally, it’ll be a phone call,” Parcells said Monday afternoon. “I told him that I thought his team was a better team this year than it was last year, and I really believe that. I really think that. I know they went to the Super Bowl last year, but I believe they’re better now than they were in 2011. Football is a very unusual game — a bounce here or there can affect them, and I think that’s ultimately what happened to them last year.

“But this year, they are certainly one of the top contenders in the AFC — they’re a team that I don’t think a lot of teams would look forward to playing late in the season and into the playoffs. You see things differently from a coaching perspective, and I think people need to realize that.”

Parcells is confident about the state of the offense. However, on the other side of the ball, the Patriots have been pilloried for their pass defense over the course of the first nine games — New England has given up an average of 285.3 passing yards per game (fourth-most in the league), 47 pass plays of 20 yards or more (most in the league) and 19 touchdown passes (tied for third-most in the league).

While Parcells said you could take the pass defense to task, you also have to consider the state of the pass rush, which has struggled at times to get consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Parcells believes that while Belichick and the Patriots have taken strides in the right direction with a handful of additions in free agency and the draft (including first-round selection Chandler Jones this past spring), they could still use another pass rusher.

“I think you can talk about the pass defense, but at the same time, you need to also talk about the pass rush,” Parcells said. “I know Bill addressed that this past season with the addition of a few guys like Chandler Jones, but I think they could use another guy coming off that edge. They could use another pressure player off the corner.”

In the end, Parcells has faith that Belichick and the Patriots will be able to “figure it out” between now and the end of the season.

“Bill knows what the problems are, and he’s better than just about anyone when it comes to identifying the problems and going about trying to fix it and adjust it,” Parcells said. “With the wide-open offenses, the problems with pass defense are everywhere. It’s just a matter of making the adjustments and seeing who can play best late in the season, and I’m confident that Bill will have them headed in the right direction.”

wow really’ how bad was last years team? Not sure the rest of the world would agree with ya there big guy. I love my pats but thats crazy talk!

  • Rebelguy

Interesting talk from a football sage. Talk of another pressure guy on the edge, yet no mention of the need for improvement in the secondary, in the form of another acquisition? I was virtually alone on this site before the season began screaming for top flight corners as a priority in the draft. I’ve been proven right. Hopefully Talib will take some pressure off but i wonder if he’s a long term solution, too volatile. Balance; corners, corners. One top rushing prospect in jones already, now get a top flight corner next year who is not a head case or thug.

I think Parcells is on the money. The secondary clearly needs reinforcements, but when the front seven don’t do their job well in pass defense the secondary looks even worse. My thought is I wonder if they get enough of an interior push to compliment what the guys coming off the edge are doing.

  • Bvbdan1

The Tuna has spoken. He is right. Edge guy.

  • Bbndenial

Fanene was supposed to be that ty warren type of pass rushing interior lineman  …teams are double teaming jones and  ninkovich does not have the speed or power on the other side  to be a compliment  to jones

  • innovator

I can only say so many times that the lack of pass rush has been evident for years before people will start acknowledging it,and acknowledging that Ninkovich gets shut down most of the game…We had all kinds of opportunities to get plenty of pass rushers during the last three offseasons, and the front office has failed when the obvious answers to this issue was right in front of them….I’d take a flier on Ray Edwards, who was just released by the Falcons…Maybe he will have a chip on his shoulder…

Only better with respect to the Running game.  The rest is a wash…

  • Dlong1236

He only said it because he knew you dopes would climb all over each other to write a stupid story about it and start talking about him.

Parcells said, “Football is a very unusual game — a bounce here or there can affect them, and I think that’s ultimately what happened to them last year”. He is referring to the Pats getting the lucky breaks, interceptions and fumbles at the right time to win games last year. The Pats record last year could have easily been 11-5. The team is much better this year and could have a 8-1 record with some break that did not go their way. I believe the Pats will find their chemistry on offense and defense in the second half and go into the playoffs playing solid football.

    No. No they’re not.

Tuna’s eyesight must be having problems.  I believe the new practice schedule mandated by the CBA is having an especially negative effect on young teams like the Pats.  Lack of repetitions breeds errors..

  • CAPatsFan

Parcells is partially right. About the inconsistency of the Pats’ pass rush. It’s the kiss of death to the defensive secondary. It makes that part of the defense look much worse. But make no mistake about it, that secondary still needs lots of work. Maybe Talib will help to stabilize it? Maybe blitzing more will help too?

  • Taibbbb

It’s amazing how short memories are. Remember having whole games with Edelman and Slater back there? Remember Sterling Moore signing off the street and starting days later? At least this year we have NFL players back there. You’d prefer Joah Barrett?

And Parcells is right. We do need more rushers. But this year’s team has been better on D in almost every way — especially tackling. We had numerous games where the Pats actually tackled well (the opener, the London game, the AZ game, and even the Denver game weren’t awful). Not saying they were good as a whole ever, but they had some decent performances. Last year, until very late, the only even halfway solid defensive performance was against Dallas.

    Pass rush?

  • Bruinman86

It’s not that much different than last year.  The big noticeable difference is that BB isn’t willing to bitz much and won’t commit send many guys when he does. Likely to keep as many secondary guys in front of the play, many of which can’t seem to tackle worth a crap.

Bill Parcells says the Patriots are better than last year? Well……..looks like the Vince Lombardi Trophy is in the bag!

If he’s so good at making adjustments why hasn’t he done anything to improve the pass defense for the past 4 years running? I agree that they need another pass-rusher on par with Chandler Jones, but to watch their secondary get burned week after week for FOUR YEARS now is just infuriating and makes me wonder about the coaching in that area.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, but the fact that they’re in the middle of the road (20) in the NFL for sacks at this point in the season without a whole lot of blitzing is a good sign.  Of course all this pressure doesn’t seem to help the back end of the defense that much, but maybe that will change when the safeties return from injuries and Talib starts playing.

LOL.  What do you call using WR’s at CB, moving your starting CB to Safety, drafting 3 DB’s in 2 years, drafting a pass rushing DE, and trading for another top-flight CB?  It seems to me he’s doing anything and everything to improve the pass defense…but he can’t play the game for them.

    Trust in Bill…………..

  • stephen towne

we will see how talib  plays when he gets into field  could be the player that help fix problems in secondary . least they have a guy with 18 interception throughout carear  with tampa bay .

Papa Bill may not have liked “her” when she first came into the kitchen but when he left he took her with him to two more teams.
