Mark Sanchez gives new meaning to butt-end 11.22.12 at 10:24 pm ET
By

EAST RUTHERFORD — Midway through the second quarter, with the Jets already down 14-0, Mark Sanchez tried to slide on a scramble near the line of scrimmage.

What happened next will go into NFL lore as one of the most humorous gaffes ever committed by a quarterback.

As he was going to the ground, he ran face-first into the rear end of his own lineman – Brandon Moore – and fumbled the ball. Steve Gregory scooped up the fumbled and ran 32 yards for the touchdown.

“I was thinking a different play in my head, just a mental error there,” Sanchez said of his aborted handoff. “So, as soon as I realized there was nobody to hand it to, I started to run to toward the line and tried to cover it up and just get down, and I slid right into Brandon Moore. That was kind of an unfortunate deal there. I’m not a big believer in luck but that was pretty unlucky. It was really too bad.”

On the ensuing kickoff, Joe McKnight fumbled the kickoff when Devin McCourty delivered a crushing hit. The ball popped up in the air and was hauled down by Julian Edelman, who returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.

But the head-into-butt moment will be the defining moment of a disastrous season for the Jets and perhaps Sanchez’ career.

You gotta give Vince credit for slamming Moore to the ground just as Sanchez was coming up to the line…

    that was hilari-ass

  • celtics are a waste

Doc Rivers is a complete idiot and is the worst coach in the history of the NBA
The Celtics whole team belongs in a dumpster they suck

Guess doc should have rested Green instead! Seems he brings more to the table these days that Pierce does.

You must be watching the Bruins. eheh. Put Green on the floor with KG and Pierce and Green defers and is not aggressive, he needs to be consistent. Keep in mind there still is ONLY one player on the C’s that can create his own shot it has been that way for 13 years that is Pierce.

For a game that should have been a 50 point blow out, the Celtics did not do too bad. They had a similar starting lineup to the Heat the night before, mainly starting two players who were primed to be bench players this year and one who was not here….and only lost by eight. Not bad.

However, I found the comments here more interesting than the game.

First, I would totally agree that Green seems to have more game than Pierce of KG right now….they are totally exhausted with all of the injuries this year. I think they should probably be shut down for the last handful of games. Then, see what you have (it is not like this team is going anywhere).

Second, Green does not seem to handle being with KG as well as he does with Pierce, which I find odd. This is why that “big” starting lineup may not be able to work.

As for the idea that Doc is the worst coach ever….that is a big chuckle. In recent years, the Celtics alone have had far worse coaches in the last three decades, including ML Carr (likeable guy, but seemingly purposely tanked a season for obvious reasons) and Rick Pitino (ugh).

As for Doc being able to teach his players his own skills, I think he has imparted some of his skills on Rondo, Bradley, and Lee….to the degree that they will accept his tutelage. Most NBA players are unwilling to accept a lot of teaching; they prefer to go it alone. That may explain why Williams is a lottery pick turned overseas pro.

As for the Heat affording players, they are over the cap like most teams. Their bench is limited in many games – though Allen does help – and Lewis and Andersen are on the low veteran deals. They have used their money wisely as they have gone over the cap. But, let’s face it…this team is relying on the three big guys who are still in their prime.
