Tom Brady really wants Wes Welker – ‘a quarterback’s dream’ – back in 2013 12.06.12 at 6:19 pm ET

Tom Brady was raving again about Wes Welker on Wednesday. (Mike Petraglia/WEEI.com)

FOXBORO — With all respect to David Dunn and Athletes First, there is NO better agent for Wes Welker than Tom Brady.

We heard Brady say after the team’s most recent win that the Patriots “couldn’t be in this situation” without Welker.

On Wednesday, Brady continued his not-so thinly veiled campaign to persuade the Patriots to keep Welker in New England after this season, when he is again a restricted free agent who could be franchised for approximately $12 million.

Welker is leading the league in receptions (92) and seventh in yards (1,064).  As if to be set up like a ball on the 18th at Pebble Beach, Brady was asked this week again if he marvels at Welker’s consistency on Sundays, about his ability to bring everything in, and his ability to get up after some of the big hits he takes.

Brady drove it 345 yards, with a draw right over the water, and put it right in the middle of the fairway.

“Well, it’s not only Sunday; it’s Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for him, too,” Brady began. “I think that’s the exceptional part: how he takes care of himself. Wes loves to play football. There’s nothing more important in Wes’s life than being a football player and thinking about football and making the big play and running the right route and getting open when it’s most important.

“That’s what quarterbacks dream about too: having receivers that do that. And Wes is everything you look for in his ability, not only when he catches the ball to be an important part of the play, but also on plays when other guys are supposed to get the ball, he busts his butt harder than anybody to make sure he’s doing his job to clear out on a certain route or to take some coverage with him so another guy can get the ball. I think that’s what makes Wes really special is his selflessness as a player. But the ball always seems to find a way to him.”

What role will Tom Brady play in Wes Welker's future?

What qb wouldn’t want him back, even forgiving the superbowl drop? There’s more to the whole deal than just money here. Curious because it was BB who was the driving force in his acquisition. something here we don’t know behind the scenes other than we know bill doesn’t like flippant guys around him and Wes occasionally goes that way.

He’s getting older, but he’s done nothing but show his durability, to a freakish extent.

It would be hard to continue to respect BB if he gets rid of Welker because it wouldn’t be a performance decision. It would be something else and that shouldn’t be the Patriots way to treat a perfect team player and potential Hall of Famer.  Time to swallow personal ego and do the right thing.

Welker will not be resigned by the Pats if he is looking for a huge payday. The Pats have always used money VS value as a deciding factor. Welker is at the end of his career and yes he still has good value but not for big money, this will hurt the team in other areas. The Pats offense is always evolving. The TE position is a good example and a big key to the Pats success. I think the Pats will add a new wrinkle next year by drafting or FA two real deep threat WRs. The short passing game has Gronk, Hernandez, Julian, Woodhead, Vereen and needs to add real deep threat options. Pats will still be a powerhouse on offense without Welker and the Pats offense will evolve to the next best thing, REAL DEEP THREATS. Pats may sign Welker to a three year deal for 30 million with 18 million guaranteed…..my best guess.

It is not about ego. You don’t think BB respects Welker? It is about fitting contracts into a cap. BB and his staff will come up with a figure they feel is right for the team. You have to respect that. I love what both sides have done for the Pats and hope they find a middle ground. Time will tell.
