Resetting AFC playoff picture 12.17.12 at 7:48 am ET

J.J. Watt salutes the Houston crowd after a tackle in Sunday’s win over the Colts. (AP)

After Sunday’s action, here’s a quick look at where the AFC playoff stands:

1. Houston (12-2): Unless something wacky happens, the Texans wrapped up one of the top two spots with their win over the Colts on Sunday at home. Houston is in control of its’ own destiny — it can clinch a top-two seed with a win next week against visiting Minnesota, and if the Texans follow that up with a win over the Colts in the regular-season finale, they’ll clinch home field. Houston did an excellent job bouncing back after last Monday’s brutal loss to the Patriots, and sent a message to the rest of the AFC that it’ll be a tough out in the postseason.

Remaining schedule: vs. Vikings (8-6), at Colts (9-5).

2. Denver (11-3): The Broncos first quality win of the season came at a great time, as they crushed the reeling Ravens in Baltimore and moved a game ahead of the Patriots and into the No. 2 slot in the AFC chase. It’s next to impossible that Denver loses one of their two remaining games (the Broncos face Kansas City and Cleveland, and have the easiest strength of schedule the rest of the way, playing teams that are a combined 7-21 over the last two weeks), so it’s safe to say they have the No. 2 seed well in hand heading into the last two weeks of the season.

Remaining schedule: vs. Browns (5-9), vs. Chiefs (2-12).

3. Patriots (10-4): As Kevin Garnett once told us, “Anything is possible,” but at this point, it seems highly unlikely that the Patriots are going to get off the No. 3 seed. Even with games against Jacksonville and Miami, New England can’t move up unless the Texans or Broncos stumble, and at this point, that really doesn’t seem like a possibility. If things stay as they are, that would mean the Patriots would host a wild card game that first playoff weekend against the Bengals.

Remaining schedule: at Jaguars (2-12), vs. Dolphins (6-8).

4. Ravens (9-5): Ever since Ray Rice converted on 4th and 29 against the Chargers on Thanksgiving weekend, it’s been all downhill for Baltimore. The Ravens have taken a major step backwards over the last three weeks with three consecutive losses, culminating with a 34-17 home loss to the Broncos. Baltimore is clearly a shell of itself, and given where they are right now, it wouldn’t be out of the question for them to finish with a 9-7 mark, as they have games against the Giants and Bengals to finish out the season. However, the Ravens hold on to the fourth spot, the Colts will travel to Baltimore for a wild-card date with the Ravens.

Remaining schedule: vs. Giants (8-6), at Bengals (8-6).

5. Indy (9-5): The Colts were beaten pretty handily by the Texans on Sunday in Houston, going down by a 29-17 count. While it’s a safe bet that they’ll bounce back this weekend against the woeful Chiefs and hit double-digits in wins, their regular-season finale could be an interesting one against the Texans. Playoff positioning could still be on the line, and it would be interesting to see how Houston plays things if it’s locked into the top spot.

Remaining schedule: at Chiefs (2-12), vs. Texans (12-2).

6. Cincinnati (8-6): With all due respect to Indy, this might be the most surprising team in the mix, at least to this point. The Bengals have won five of their last six, and that hot streak — combined with the recent struggles of the Ravens and Steelers — have combined to put them in very good position entering the final two weeks of the season. If they do end up missing out, they’ll have no one to blame but themselves, as they have a pair of division games to close out their slate, with a contest at Pittsburgh and then home to face Baltimore.

Remaining schedule: at Steelers (7-7), vs. Ravens (9-5).

On the outside looking in: Pittsburgh (7-7), New York Jets (6-7), Miami (6-8).

Playing in texas doesn’t bother me, but Denver mile high Oh boy.

  • Nh bruh

So Denver has one quality win? Pats fans/media are unreal. Who has NE beat?! Houston. An in-over-their-head texans team on a Monday night in foxboro in December. The Pats schedule has been as easy as it gets…including only having 7 real away games (London was technically a road game). Be professional Chris and call it down the middle. It’s stuff like this that give Pats fans/media a bad name.

  • Nh bruh

Not to mention the only two tough road games they had they lost (Sea, Balt). Plus they play in the AFC least, I mean east, so they get 6 automatics Vs bad football teams. And Miami, NYJ, and Buf are bad football teams. U say Denver has easiest schedule left at 7-21 well guess who’s right behind em? The Pats at 8-20. So please be objective. Both teams benefitted from soft schedules…but no one had an easier road than the Pats. No one. Well maybe Atlanta.

First quality win for the Broncos??  Please.  They beat the Steelers, opening night, they beat the Saints, handily, they beat the Bengals, they beat every team that was put in front of them, with the exception of teams that are ranked, along with them, at the top of the NFL.  Losing to good teams is not something to be ashamed of, especially when it comes early in a season where you have installed a new QB, offensive system, and that QB is coming off of a year long, medically necessary lay-off.    To say that they had no quality wins prior to the Ravens is total BS.  Peyton Manning is a football god.  He makes whatever team he plays on, an instant 10-14 game winner.  He has made the playoffs each year, with the exception of his rookie season.  Want to know how tough that is?  Ask the Steelers, or the Giants.  What he may lack in winning Super Bowls (I believe because he was on defensively inferior teams), he makes up for in consistency in getting his team a shot in the playoffs.

and the Patsies lost to the Cardinals, too.

  • Petey Pablo

Denver, Houston and Indy are all playoff teams and they blew out two and beat Denver by 10… pretty good if you ask me.

  • JOSievers

I am sorry, but there is no way the Pats roll into Mile High and win there.  I have been to that stadium to watch my beloved Pats many times and we struggle against them even with their 3rd string QB.  We will win the divisional round playoff game, but after that it will be over when we have to face Denver with Peyton freaking Manning in their house. Lets just hope that Brady doesn;t feel he has to heave it deep every play to compete.  That is when he really seems to turn the ball over anymore, when the pressure is on!

  • Flipfou

Pats first 3 losses came by a total of 4 points and last night they could’ve had a comeback for the ages if special teams and Kyle Arrington did their jobs.  I take them to go to the AFC Title game and compete against (who else) Peyton one more time for a chance to go to the Big Game. Time for Belichek to start adjusting the air pressure in the practice bubble to get the boys ready for a shoot out in Mile High.  Let Gronk rest until then!

  • A sports fan

These EEI guys are such hometown idiots…..the Pats screwed up…..they screwed up…..no one ever comes in and beats the Pats……..turnovers, mistakes, blah blah blah……Houston can’t say the same things last week but this week the Pats gave the game away.

They were dominated in the first half and were lucky the score wasn’t 24 or 27-3.

  • Tsnomris2

I’m always fascinated, in a bad way, by the number of Patriot-haters who post comments on these websites. I’ve been a Pats for over 40 years. I and those like me endured years and years of frustration and disappointment. Was it the “snow game”, the “tuck rule:, the “spying” incident? Every one of those incidents was something any coach in the NFL would have exploited, and in the case of “spying”, undoubtedly did. Under the “triple B’s”, New England has been an historically great team. Brady is a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame and Bellichik, too. Lay off!

  • Nh bruh

Amen sports fan. Pats defense is awful, yet when they win they create turnovers. They’re ball hawks…but when pats lose they gave game away. Just gave it to them. Here’s the facts. When Pats face the really good teams they rarely ever are able to match up physically. They have to make it a game of 7 on 7 like last night. Pats fans/media are the worst. No objectivity. Worst bunch of homers I’ve ever seen.

  • Ty

The facts are that if the Pats hadn’t turned the ball over 4 times last night and taken better care of the ball, they could have have won last night.  That’s what I think a lot of people are saying.  The 49ers forced a couple of those, you have to give them credit.  It seemed the ball just didn’t bounce the Patriots’ way as the 49ers recovered 5 out of 6 fumbles that they had as well.

I wouldn’t say the Patriots defense isn’t “awful”, they’re right around average, and when they’re forcing turnovers, they’re pretty good.  They didn’t play that great last night, but they aren’t as bad as the 41 points SF put up on them either.  Last night’s game was a solid matchup between two good teams, and we saw at times why the Patriots are ranked #1 offensively and why the 49ers defense is ranked #1 as well.  I think they actually did a pretty good job in stretches of matching up with the physicality of the 49ers, and they certainly showed a lot of fight/heart to get back in that game when things were going horribly.  I’m gonna have to disagree with that physicality remark, as the Patriots have plenty of guys who are pretty physical (Spikes, Mayo, Wilfork, Talib, Love, Scott, Mankins, Connolly, and Gronk to name a few).  The 49ers were more physical during that first half to be sure, but the Patriots finally matched their intensity in the latter part of that game.  They definitely did a good job of taking care of Houston and J.J. Watt as well the week before.

As for the Patriots’ schedule, they can only play the teams on it, and they usually beat the teams they’re supposed to.  I think they’ve significantly improved their play since losing to Arizona and Seattle, early losses in the season.  Arizona and Seattle are completely different teams as well since those games were played.  I think we can agree on that.

  • Ri429

pats will be one and done.
    enjoy the off season a$$holes.
they sux and there fans blow.

  • Ty

Now that’s not very nice.  I’m sure we can be friends here… most Pats fans are great.  The key is that they are football fans as well.  I know quite a few myself!  Just out of curiosity, what team do you follow?

  • TedSox

I never thought the Pats would beat both The Niners and Houston on consequitive weeks but was hoping after they handled Houston so easily. They played poorly yesterday for sure. However, I must be the only person around that thinks Denver might lose to Cleveland next week. It is a classic trap game. Denver is riding high after crushing Baltimore but anyone who has seen the Ravens recently will tell you they have been awful. Cleveland has been 5-4 in their last nine and are playing better than The Ravens. If Denver comes in flat at all Cleveland has a real chance.

  • askj

Right. And saying that the number one seed in the AFC is not a quality win is totally objective on your part. Grow up.

  • Maroti825

Stop killing the guy for saying its Denvers first quality win, IT IS. There strength of victory befory last week was .366. Pats was .519 highest among AFC playoff teams. Pats strength of schduale was also highest among AFC playoff teams at .524. Facts people

  • Ty

I thought that the Pats could definitely beat those teams, but I think most people knew that it certainly wouldn’t be easy.  They nearly pulled it off, but if they hope to make a deep playoff run, they have to play well week after week against quality teams.  Clearly if they do that then they CAN beat teams like that in consecutive weeks.  Hopefully playing those types of teams in back to back weeks is sort of a good way to prepare them for what the playoffs will be like though (not that the more experienced players on this team need that).  I see what you’re saying about Cleveland, and it’s a good point, but I’m just not going to get my hopes up for that one.  At the very least, Manning won’t just show up expecting to win.

  • TedSox

I can agree with your general point about quality teams. Denver cannot beat teams they do not play. They have beaten the teams put in front of them and are a quality team. However, the idea that Manning was on defensively inferior teams is faulty. Many of the Indy teams had plenty of talent and would match up well, if not better than, with the current Denver team. The Patriots have shredded basically this Denver defense three times in the last year. Manning, especially in Denver, presents a much larger obsticle to the Patriots than any other team in the AFC team but the Patriots will score and historically that has been a big problem for Manning.

  • Nh bruh

No it isn’t. Pittsburgh in the opener. Bengals in cincy. Balt last week. Again who the F have the Pats beat? Hou and Denver. Maybe Indy but cmon we all know Indy isn’t that good. And the Denver win was early in season with manning on a new team coming off a season ending neck injury. Both teams have played weak schedules. Sorry buddy that’s just reality.

  • Nh bruh

Actually I said Hou is one of their 2 quality wins numbnuts. Learn how to read before you comment.

  • Petey Pablo

your argument is weak sauce bro… denver was good enough to beat pittsburgh in the opener.. yet you discredit it by saying that oh mannings neck and blah blah blah new team and it took him a while to get used to it and thats why they lost to the pats… make up your mind…  Pats have a tougher division as well.. yes I think the jets, dolphins, bills are better than the chargers, chiefs and raiders…

  • Dnlhos

All the teams in the hunt suck and will not make it in to the playoffs. The steelers might get into the playoffs if they are lucky!!!

  • Football Master

The reason most of the teams are in the playoffs is because they had easy schedules! Like the Texans they had all easy games except 2 it was the packers and the pats and of corse they lost to the packers 42-24 and the pats 42-14! Most of these teams suck!!!! Open up your eyes!!!! The hint teams suck please do not let me get started on the dolphins and the jets![I am pretty cool with the steelers even though they lost 2 easy teams like the Chargers
