FOXBORO — The new year started off on a somber note for the Patriots as they learned of the passing of Don Brocher, the longest-tenured employee in franchise history, to a season-long battle against leukemia.

Brocher, the team’s equipment manager, succumbed to the blood cancer early Tuesday morning after turning 60 on Nov. 23. The 2012 season was his 41st with the Patriots.

“The Kraft family and the entire Patriots organization awoke with very heavy hearts this morning,” said Patriots chairman and CEO Robert Kraft in statement released on New Year’s Day.

“That is when most of us learned of Don’s passing. He had fought this deadly disease so valiantly all season long. We were all optimistic that he would defeat it and fully recover. He was back on our sidelines just two weeks ago for our game against the 49ers and I can’t remember ever seeing him happier. I am glad I had that opportunity to thank him once again for his loyalty and countless contributions to the team. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Laurie, and all who knew Don and are mourning his loss today.”

Brocher began working for the Patriots as a ball boy on the equipment manager’s staff in 1972 and was hired full-time as an assistant that season. He remained a member of the team’s equipment staff since then and was promoted from assistant to equipment manager in February of 1994, shortly after Kraft purchased the team. He was entering his 19th season as equipment manager and his 41st season overall with the Patriots when he was diagnosed with leukemia in June of 2012.

In August, when the Patriots traveled to Tampa for their preseason game against the Buccaneers, Brocher stayed behind. It was the first Patriots game he had missed in 40 years, snapping a streak of 834 consecutive Patriots games that he had worked, including 37 of the franchise’s 39 postseason games. He was proud to be a member of each of the franchise’s seven Super Bowl teams and celebrated each of the Patriots’ three Super Bowl championships.

During his Patriots career, he handled the equipment needs for thousands of players during the tenures of 11 of the franchise’s 14 head coaches.

Brocher was born Nov. 23, 1952 in Boston. He and his wife Laurie have been long-time residents of Norton. Funeral services are not available at this time but will be distributed once the arrangements have been finalized.

Great! Now do it next year consistently when we actually have a chance to make the postseason.

No doubt that Crawford has impressed lately. And you would think that with Gonzalez hitting over .390 lately, they would be better. But they don’t do the little things…last game or three, Pedroia, runner on 2nd, no outs, pulled the ball to the left side…no advance by runner…next guy hits fly ball. Instead of a run scored, its a runner still on second…Pedroia should know better…

Great guy…worked his butt off when he started in ’72. We (the scouts, were young) but he was a teenager. The Patriots didn’t have the finances of other teams, so hard work with George Luongo really stood out. RIP Donnie

Sounds like he truly was a great person, Mike… My sincere condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends and the entire Patriots organization.  That is quite the career Don Brocher had. Thanks for everything.

This was an impressive way for Ben Rohrbach to fish for Twitter followers while avoiding actually writing an article.

Ainge is the definition of a fraud. He laughed at the mistake Red made by holding onto players too long and watching the team get old and lose their title window, and said he would never do that. Yet he has. I think some of it might be PR-related. The celtics are already the 3rd or 4th team in this town. instead of having the team be mediocre a few years to collect assets that can be used as trade chips to acquire all-star caliber players like he did in 2007, or build around them like the Thinder, which would mean this team would be the DISTANT 4th team in this town (check the ratings, the Bruins nearly doubled the Celtics playoff ratings and the celtics BARELY beat out meaningless Redsox regular season games in late April/early may), he and ownership seem content on just getting to the playoffs and losing in the 1st or 2nd round. By that they will get playoff revenue and the team will continue to be somewhat relevant, without being close to a championship caliber team. Getting to the first or 2nd round ever year means nothing. Stop delaying the inevitable, Danny, and rebuild. Stop being afraid of this team becoming the 4th team in this town for a few years, when it could pay off in the long-run, and standing pat with a 1st or 2nd round playoff team and being content with that.

Sure sounded to me like Danny was implying Pierce woudn’t be back on the C’s, hmmmm.

    Interesting tweets and comments.

First, totally agree that this was a great way to not have to write an article. I don’t think I have ever seen something quite like this type of “tweeticle”on WEEI…disappointing.

Second, I think they need to get a better picture of Danny Ainge on this site. That looks like a scene of Batman, when the Joker says “Wait til’ they get a load of me.”

Third, I can understand some of the disappointment with Danny in terms of not being able to get work done. However, he is hardly a fraud. According to multiple sources, he has tried the last three years to trade some of his older stars, but hit road blocks each time. If his rumored, proposed trades went through, the Celtics would have O.J. Mayo, Krish Humphries, DeAndre Jordan, and Eric Bledsoe on the team. Not a bad way to reaccumulate assets.

Sure, it hasn’t happened yet, but that is not totally Danny’s fault. Which is why I think he will be in a trade first frame of mine this summer, but if he finds no good nibbles, we may have a similar team to last year – and long term that isn’t too bad, because these contracts will come off the books in the next two seasons, giving the team ample room to go in a variety of directions. And, to be honest, he has a variety of younger, signed assets to work around or trade. As everyone knows, the NBA is a reclamation league. If for some reason Brandon Bass, Courtney Lee, or Jordan Crawford are not a fit anymore, there are plenty of teams who wouldn’t mind them on their team as a project. Happens all the time in the league.

I have kind of put this team out of my conscience for a while.

Ainge is a stupid idiot and sucks as a GM. Pierce is the reason the Celtics are now not playing and Pierce has suck for 5 years.

Ainge is not kidding me. Trade Rondo and PP. Let Doc go because He does not know how to coach a young team. Bring in Kevin McHale to coach, Celts need a face lift. With some wise choices alot can be done.

Pierce will break the record for turnovers next season. Doc has become the most overrated coach in the history of organized sports. His team’s seasons have ended with blowouts AT HOME two years in a row. Thank Tom Thibodeau for the championship in 2008.

  • voice of reason

My word Danny blow this thing up, I would rather watch a rebuilding than tired old players. let Pierce go.

when you say kg and pierce have a lot of basketball left, you mean that they can still play ball but the celtics won’t make it to the playoffs right? Cos my 60-year old uncle has a lot of basketball left in him but he ain’t in any league.

  • http://www.facebook.com/enjoyrobby Robby Apelo

Ainge has to realize that the window is already closed. We’re not stupid. it’s not because of injuries, lack of practice, limiting the minutes of kg and pierce that we’re not winning. it’s because as players become older their production naturally decreases. bron durant are in their mid 20′s cmon! how can you expect kg and pierce to win on their mid 30s?? time to let go and get young! do you really want to retain kg and pierce till their 40s??

he’s stupid enuf to retain kg and pierce till their 40s. true story.

  • Peter Griffin

“True story?”!? You mustn’t of graduated middle school.

  • Phil

Mike thats stretch. However, I do believe that it’s time to move PP. I just don’t see the C’s keeping both KG and PP, but nothing would surprise me.

  • antonio

Most of what you said is correct, however, to say that Doc has become the most overated coach in the history of organized sports, is a false statement. Look at all the NBA teams that have been trying to get Doc. Why is it that he is mentioned in freaking trades??? If you dont’ like him, we get it. But don’t post b.s.

If Pierce and KG are back next year then it is time for a new GM.
They need to be gently and respectfully nudged out the door.
It is time to begin building the next championship team.
I wonder if Ainge is up to the task.
