Ravens shock Broncos in double OT 01.12.13 at 9:09 pm ET
By

Peyton Manning threw an interception at the end of the first overtime and Ravens kicker Justin Tucker drilled a 47-yarder 1:42 into the second overtime to lift Baltimore to a remarkable 38-35 win over the Broncos in an AFC divisional playoff matchup Saturday afternoon in Denver.

With the victory, the Ravens will advance to the AFC championship game, and will face the winner of Sunday’s Patriots-Texans game.

The Broncos appeared to have the game wrapped up at the end of regulation, but Baltimore shocked the Denver crowd with an impressive fourth-quarter drive that ended when Joe Flacco connected with Jacoby Jones with less than a minute to go to tie the game at 35. That set the stage for a scoreless first overtime, but a Manning pick in Denver territory opened the door for the Ravens, who celebrated after Tucker’s kick was good from 47 yards.

Flacco was 18-for-34 for 331 yards and three touchdowns in the win, and Ravens running back Ray Rice added 131 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. In addition, wide receiver Torrey Smith had three catches for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Manning threw three touchdowns, but the late interception was a killer for the Broncos, who were the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoff picture, but will now watch the rest of the postseason from the sidelines.

Manning, who found Demaryius Thomas, Brandon Stokley and Knowshon Moreno for touchdown passes, ended up going 28-for-43 for 290 yards with three touchdowns and two picks in the loss. Denver also big performances from Ronnie Hillman (22 carries, 83 yards), Eric Decker (six catches, 84 yards) and Trindon Holliday, who became the first player in NFL with punt and kickoff return touchdowns in the same playoff game. Holliday took a punt back 90 yards in the first half and opening the second half with a 104-yard kick return to help jumpstart the Broncos.

After going back-and-forth for the first three-plus quarters, the Broncos took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter when Manning put together a 10-play, 88-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard pass play from Manning to Thomas to make it 35-28 midway through the quarter.

That set the stage for a wild finish. First. the Ravens, driving late in regulation for what would have likely been a game-tying touchdown, were denied when Jones dropped a third-down pass, and then had an pass play from Flacco to Dennis Pitta broken up by Denver defensive back Mike Adams. But after the Broncos failed to pick up a second first down and were forced to punt the ball away with 1:15 remaining in regulation. After Flacco got his team to  its own 30-yard line, he heaved it deep downfield with 41 seconds left. Jones beat his coverage, and snuck into the end zone to tie the game.

So much for Manning getting rid of those playoff demons. Wow, what a game…..

  • Manningchokes

You mean to tell me probable-MVP Peyton Manning choked in a big spot, late in the game, being a #1 seed and heavy favorite in the playoffs? Shocker.

  • Fab4ever

What a game….and proof once again, that is why games are played! Everybody wanted to crown Peyton Manning…Denver hadn’t faced anything like a healthy Ravens team….now if the Pats can take care of business, we’ll have yet another epic battle at the Razor….
Hey Spygate, still think Manning is “the man”? He was very Eli-esque….so how many picks did the brothers combine to throw this year? Yeah I know…it’s a bit of the “na na na na” playground BS but you’re the king at that…..Go Pats!

  • Fab4ever

That pick in OT…and how about that vaunted Bronco defense….yeah, exactly….goes to show all the media does is bend with the wind…..

  • patsdiehard

Hopefully there wont be any surprises tomorrow w/ the Texans and game goes as expected. Ravens will be a bit worse for wear after Denver, which is what most of us wanted. Baltimore will play us with sky high emotion but i don’t think they’ll have an answer for our balance offense.

Pats road to the Super Bowl just got a whole lot easier. Two potential road games against Texans and Ravens. No excuses now. Do their job and they will get it done.

  • Allan in Millis

Pats have home field advantage throughout the playoffs !

    Go Pats !!

  • Sicko

Yeah, Manning rolling out and on the move looked just as bad as when Brady has to do it. Just a terrible throw in that situation and no excuse.

Ravens will be beat to heck considering the extra session and emotion of that game. If the Pats play their game and not get caught up in the hype of the previous game played New Orleans here we come.

  • Baker

I love how Tom Brady is judged and scrutinized before every playoff game. “If Brady loses how will it effect his legacy?”. PLLLLEEEAAAASE. Manning is now 9-11 in post season games, 9-11!! Ladies and Gentleman Peyton Manning, your alleged MVP, First Team All Pro, and “Greatest of all Time”. What A Joke!

  • H Bouley

Another in a long list of Payton Manning playoff failures. You’d think with his special teams scoring two TDs the game would be easy pickings his emminence, but( except for 1 year) of course Manning would find a way to lose. When it comes   to rating all time QBs a 7-10 playoff record does not look good.

  • Ty

This game was one of those once-in-a-lifetime type of games you know will be replayed for years and years on ESPN classic and made into an NFL films documentary.  Really cool to watch a game like that when you are aware it’s a truly special game while it’s unfolding.  It’s hard not to look ahead, but the Patriots still have a tough team to play tomorrow.  Both the Texans and Patriots would only be doing a disservice to themselves if they looked ahead, and I fully expect that neither team is doing that.  I have all the confidence in the Pats, but for anyone out there saying our playoff path just got easier, Texans fans are probably saying the same thing.  Whoever wins tomorrow will have home field the next week.  While the Ravens did a big favor in that respect for both teams by winning tonight, they are one incredibly tough team, and Flacco looked flat-out elite today.  That’s a team nobody should be looking past either.  With all that said, GO PATS!!!!! BEAT HOUSTON!!!!!!

  • Dennygotout

Dale Arnold really called this one. Watch the Pats lose now. You’ll be 0 for 2 Dale. Again.

  • Bhdyer20

That is why I laugh at people who act like the outcomes are a given.  When the Patriots lost to San Fran people wrote off the chance to get a bye.  This week it was all about how Baltimore and Houston could not win.  How boring would it be if the better team or the favorite won every game.  What a great game.  As for tomorrow I always get nervous when everyone thinks a game will be a laugher.

  • Fab4ever

It really was a great game to watch…especially after all the crap we had to sit through last weekend…

  • Fab4ever

Was that Eli or Peyton out there tonight? How many picks??? Is it 4:30pm Sunday yet?

  • Anonymous

Dale is the WORST! He’s like 0-250 on this stuff..should stick to hockey. The only sport he seems to know anything about.

  • H Bouley

Nice to see Jerry Callahan not get his wish of a Brady/Manning AFC finale…too bad JERK! Much nicer to know the Pats will be home thoughout the playoffs.

  • Anonymous

That 1 year he didn’t win it…his defense and a poor throw from Tom Brady did.

  • Anonymous

This is pretty much EXACTLY what I expected. Manning throws an INT that loses the game for the Broncos. Anyone who has paid attention to Peyton Manning’s post seasons should have too. Really nothing “Shocking” here…

  • Peyton = Overrated!

I agree whole-heartedly!  Manning is one Reche Caldwell drop of going down as the biggest loser in football history!

  • Jj

Shock? Please. I hate both teams but been telling people and texting Weei for 2 weeks saying Denver wouldn’t even win their first game. They didn’t beat anyone good!!! Please.

  • celtics

I was hoping Denver would win. The Ravens are  a better team and will be tough to beat. That is if we can beat the Texans!!!!

  • Jj

I think me and 5million Patriots fans knew that Manning pick was coming.

  • Baker

That’s what I’m sayin homie!! To quote Pete Carroll, “I’M SO FREAKING JACKED RIGHT NOW!!!”

  • Shutiggyup

Yeah but his “if it’s good for the Patriots it happens” mantra is really holding up!

  • Shutiggyup

Or one BS offensive interference call against Troy brown . . . or the flu ripping through the team. . . or Polian turning up the heat and piping in crowd noise . . .  or a Bobby Wade cheap shot on Harrison’s knee . . .

  • H Bouley

Good to know Payton will be the starting QB in the probowl. Who is more qualified to win a meaningless game  than Manning?

  • Patsfan41968

And 0-4 in playoff games played under 40 degrees!

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Football Writers of America… your MVP.

  • Baker

    You stealing from my post?

  • Anonymous

Nope.  Great minds think alike is all.

  • Fab4ever

Count me as one of those who “fear the given”….Pats better show up or else…Hey, the Texans have to be pumped  for a couple of reasons…first, some payback and second, a chance to host the AFC Championship….

  • Fab4ever

Nothing like some good Pete Carroll talk….

  • H Bouley

I wonder how many NFL MVP awards Payton Manning would have won if the voting was held after the playoffs.

  • Fab4ever

One super curious decision was at the end of regulation…31 seconds left, Bronco ball at their 20….and Manning is taking a knee? With 2 timeouts left? This is why Belichick is the best…he would have used that clock to his advantage…maybe get a shot at a long field goal…why? Because he trusts Brady….did John Fox NOT have any faith in Peyton? Besides, defense tend to play softer in those situations…Bill would have taken a couple of shots, safe shots at moving into a game winning FG position,,,,

  • Tiger

Who are you picking in the Houston-Baltimore game?

Remember, Houston will have home field advantage.

  • http://www.facebook.com/darrell.guay Darrell Guay

This was awesome, every radio station had Manning as the not the winner of this game but no way the loser, they all had even Dennis and Callahan as when Manning and Brady shoot it out in the AFC championship, like they haven’t even played the the divionsional game yet, you cannot of put a better script on the wall for the underdog then that, it motivates them to the most exstrem, it should any team, not bad for a defensive team like the Bronco,s playing against the old and slow Ravens, it was a good game, but what a slap in he face to all the huge Peyton Manning MVP voters it made them look like the fake,s if front of all world, that they do not know what they are talking about, it it was great to see, just like the little guy on the street corner would know more about the sport then these clowns on the networks, I picked the Ravens to win, and I hate the Ravens, just to prove a point, and it came out in my favor, awesome!!!

This really isn’t a shock. After all, the Broncos got to the top seed via a very soft schedule. In the regular season they played 11 games against horrible teams and went 11-0 in those games. They played only five games against playoff-bound teams, and went 2-3 in those, losing to the Falcons, Texans, and, of course, the Patriots. One of those wins was against the Bengals, not exactly a great team. The only really good team they beat all year, ironically, was the Ravens in week 15. So who (besides the so-called ‘experts’, and the media) is surprised? This is the playoffs. Did the Broncos think they were going to get to play the Kansas City Chiefs again?

  • Uncle Buck

I felt like I was watching an NFL films special nararrated by John Facenda.  What a great playoff game.  Manning pulled a little Brett Farve with that forced from the pocket, off balance, cross body into coverage pick. Seasoned, skilled veteran playoff quarterbacks don’t attempt that pass and they don’t get happy feet and release a duck.  He is a great quarterback, but slightly cursed and short a couple of clutch genes.

  • patsfan

another chance to beat that punk lewis

  • Fab4ever

    Won’t be easy…but let’s get past the Texans first…

  • jj

Exactly. This isnt going to be an easy game today, and if Brady throws a couple ducks we’re screwed.

  • Everyone

Manning?  Choking in the playoffs?  What a shame the Pats blew that lead in the AFC Title game years back, cuz this choke artist would have zero rings.  Hard to call a guy this accomplished a choker, a guy who pees himself in big games, because clearly he has won some big games, but the fact is, Tee Freaking Martin won a title at Tennessee when Manning could not, and our gag job in the AFC Title game in Indy was what got this guy a ring.  An all time gag artist in big games, and yesterday was not surprising to me whatsoever.

  • patsfan

right but it would be good to send lewis out here and turn off espn so we dont have to listen to him
