Shane Vereen and Tom Brady led the Patriots to another rout of the Texans in Sunday’s playoff game. (AP)

Shane Vereen tied a franchise playoff record with three touchdowns and Tom Brady threw three TD passes as the Patriots did the expected and beat the Texans, 41-28, in their AFC divisional game at Gillette Stadium. Wes Welker caught eight passes for 131 yards and Brady passed Joe Montana for most wins (17) by a quarterback in NFL playoff history. Brady, who finished 25-of-40 for 344 yards, is now 17-6 all-time in the postseason.

The win sets up the first AFC championship rematch since the Broncos and Browns in 1986-87. The Patriots will host the Ravens next Sunday evening at 6:30 at Gillette Stadium.

The three touchdowns by Vereen tied the franchise playoff record for touchdowns in a single game, held by Rob Gronkowski and Curtis Martin.

The Patriots special teams were bad from the beginning. Danieal Manning returning the opening kickoff 94 yards to the Patriots 12 yard line. But the Patriots defense held Matt Schaub and the Texans to just three yards and a 27-yard field goal from Shayne Graham.

The Patriots got the ball and went three-and-out, and lost Danny Woodhead to a left thumb injury on their first offensive play of the game. On the next drive, things got worse when the Patriots lost Rob Gronkowski when he appeared to re-injure his left forearm in trying to make a diving catch deep along the right sideline. Chandler Jones also injured his ankle in the first half and did not return.

The Patriots finally got momentum on the third drive, marching 65 yards in six plays. Vereen ran off left tackle for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Patriots a 7-3 lead late in the first. The Patriots made it 10-3 on a 37-yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski early in the second quarter.

The Patriots appeared to gain full control of the game when they went 80 yards in seven plays for a 17-3 lead. Brady hit Vereen with an eight-yard pass to the short left for the touchdown. The key play on the drive was a Brady to Welker pass down the left sideline for 47 yards to the Houston 8. On the play, Welker caught his 59th postseason pass, passing Troy Brown for the all-time franchise lead.

Welker was huge in the first half, catching six balls for 120 yards

But the first half did not end well. On the ensuing kickoff following Vereen’s second touchdown, Manning returned it 35 yards to the Houston 38. Gostkowski committed a horse collar tackle that added 15 yards. Arian Foster later ran it in from two yards to cut the lead to 17-10. The Patriots got the ball back with 1:09 left and went three-and-out. The Texans got the ball back and managed a 55-yard field goal from Graham to cut New England’s lead to 17-13 at the half.

But the Patriots got the ball to start the second half and came out sizzling, driving 69 yards in seven plays. Stevan Ridley ran it up the middle from eight yards to make it 24-13.

The Texans were driving into Patriots territory with the chance to cut it a one-score game when Rob Ninkovich disguised his coverage over the middle and picked off Schaub at the Patriots 31. The Patriots drove down and made it 31-13 on a 5-yard TD pass from Brady to Brandon Lloyd.

Vereen scored his third touchdown of the day in the fourth quarter when the Texans turned the ball over on downs at their own 33. Brady hit Vereen on a perfectly-placed pass down the left sideline, making it 38-13. The Texans added a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and nearly converted an onside kick with over five minutes left but Ninkovich was again on the spot and recovered the ball and the Patriots put the game away with a 38-yard field goal from Gostkowski with 1:14 left.

This is the Patriots seventh AFC championship appearance in the last 12 seasons. For complete coverage from the team of Chris Price and Mike Petraglia at Gillette, including postgame video, visit the Patriots team page at weei.com/patriots.

Nice overall game by the Pats sans the coverage team. Brady needs to keep up the great play and love the backs being used in the passing game.

  • Monstatroll

Dammit. With out him they are good, but Gronk brings this team to another level. Against the Ravens maybe they don’t need him but say against the Niners? Damn, damn, damn.

  • http://profiles.google.com/nikcomp Tony Nicholas

Great win because what we saw is what its going to take with no Gronk to win.  The running backs must be the Xfactor.  Funny part of the game though was the Patriots during the by week were working on “special” teams.  I think they need to revisit the term work.

  • Bhdyer20

They came very close to beating San Francisco without him in the regular season.

  • jj

Worst overall officating since the replacement refs!!! Were these guys for real? Great win by Patriots despite those clowns.

Also the special teams better f’in wake up.

  • Bruinman86

Losing woodhead is key as well, since he is the only back that can move the ball against teams that stuff the run.

  • ScoopBurton

The key phrase being ” regular season “

  • ScoopBurton

Now that statement made me laugh

  • Bruinman86

Glad I could be of help.

  • Monstatroll

Tom Brady PO record = 17 – 6. Peyton Manning = 9 – 11. I know this is off topic but god looking at it for some reason makes me smile:D

  • Joe

Special teams suck!! They need to do much better. This game would have been over long time ago if it wasn’t for the special teams! Great win, we got a tuff game next week but the Pats can do it.

  • Trolls

Tom Brady most playoff wins EVER!!!!!!!!!! suck on that trolls, and while your suckin don’t even look up at me cause i don’t even wanna see your stupid faces.

  • Trolls

Ravens Shmavens….Patriots are going to dominate wacco flacco flame and his team of senior citizens.

  • Shutiggyup

     Giggity!

  • Fab4ever

…we are putting the carriage before the horse…there are no givens when you get this deep into the playoffs. First, we will have to defeat a very tough Ravens team…don’t think for one moment that they won’t be especially motivated after last years loss…and of course the extra emotion of Ray Lewis….however, it’s not like the Pats won’t be motivated either…a little payback from their meeting this year and the fact that they really got lucky last year…The Falcons/Niners? I can see the Falcons winning…absolutely….I still have no idea who the 2 teams will be in the Super Bowl but I still like our chances even withour Gronk…it’s too bad because he is special….

  • Fab4ever

    Special teams sucked….

  • Fab4ever

Nah……Vereen stepped up big and filled the spot very nicely…this is yet another classic example of why the Pats, their “way” continue to win…they have 52 guys who can contribute…not 26 guys who can play and 26 guys who are ornaments…most teams who lose a guy of Gronk’s caliber would fold. Nope. Not your Pats. Hernandez was HUGE!!!! That 40 yeard pass and run when he just abused the linebacker…that was awesome! This is the best Boston franchise hands down…

  • Fab4ever

I’m sure John Q Spygate is reading…his words, not mine; “Brady gets a little tight around the collar in January”….he just doesn’t realize how foolish he sounds…he hates so much that he loses all objectivity and can’t come to the stark realization that Tom Brady is one great QB….period. End of story. Signed, sealed and delivered.

  • someguyinsac

I’m happy with the win, but bummed about the injuries on the way to getting it.

  • Bruinman86

Can’t argue with that. Lets hope the defense keeps improving!

  • jj

    lol

  • Tito

The Pats will cough up another fur ball soon without Gronk and we will hear the same thing over and over again. At least we were there. Sorry. The AFC sucks and the Pats are just the best of the least. See who won the previous 4 Sb’s. Thank you.

  • jj

I think what you meant is “The Patriots turned it over 4 times and STILL had it tied at the end against SF”.

  • Pats

“and we will hear the same thing over and over again.”……Coming from the guy who says the same shite over and over again.

  • Gray

the overall game was good – I would have preferred the opening or second drive to be more than just a few plays and a punt .. losing gronk was a blow but.. at this point im more concerned about having woodhead and jones back and playing.

  • Tito

Stop with the Niner game. They were making dinner reservations in the 2nd half. Jerks…

  • Sicko

Much like the Packers are now douch e.

  • OS1965

Bring on the Ravens, it will be a tough test for our Pats, but I see Pats winning by 3 points. 30-27

  • Tito’s Dad

Umm…  the Steelers won the Superbowl in 08 dummy. Look at your facts before you spew  your ignorance.

  • Sicko

You’re not welcome and the last 10 Super Bowls the AFC and NFC are dead even. BTW what time is the Packer’s game next week? Or, are you going to troll on over to the Baltimore side? Why not just push off because you are full of sour grapes and shi t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/derek.lee.82 Derek Lee

    Great win. Anyone seen Johnnyspygate?

  • Fab4ever

….and over and over and over….Remember, Aaron Rodgers is the greatest evvvvaaah! And according to Tito’s logic, from now until eternity, the NFC will win EVERY Super Bowl. AFC has no chance. None…..here’s the rub; It’s better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all….I’ll take the pats circumstances and chances every day against the opposite…like Johnny Spygate, Tito’s comments are folly…his hate clouds his objectivity…and we’re supposed to take him seriously…he’s a clown…a bad stand up routine…

  • Fab4ever

I think Tito is the guy we see wearing the sign on his back; “Kick me hard”….

  • Bvbdan1

Great win. We have got to get a handle on special teams, it’s not good all the yards special teams have given up. It starts with GOOSE. Kick the ball farther for no returns. Second, they are killing us in the middle of the field, get the fastest guys out there.

  • Bhdyer20

No I am not putting anything anywhere.  Responding to a post saying they couldn’t beat San Fran without Gronk.  I never assume outcomes it just doesn’t work.

  • Bhdyer20

NFC has won three in a row not four.  Oh I missed the game how did the Packers do?

  • Bhdyer20

    Nope meant what I said.

  • H Bouley

UGH! losing Gronk will hurt. Losing Woodheadf was tough but Vereen more than made up for the loss. Would love to see a lot more of him. Could be a really good 3rd down back.

  • Pedro

Maybe they don’t need him agains’t the Ravens? The Ravens were one dropped pass in the end zone from going to the super bowl last year. Flaco out played Brady last year, and they should have won that game. The Texans are one of the worst coached teams i have ever seen, talk about conservative play calling, they were awful. Brady looked a little shaky. New England fans are awful cocky, they haven’t done very well in the super bowl lately. As a matter of fact they haven’t been very good at all, sporting a 3-4 record. Just think if they are lucky enough to get there again, Brady could end up 3-3 in the super bowl and end all talk of the greatest. MONTANA is 4-0 in the super bowl with NO PICKS

  • sev

Vereen seemed to fill those shoes pretty well today.  He has more big play potential and will most likely become a better player if he isn’t already.  Don’t get me wrong, I would like to have Woodhead in there as well(more productive backs to confuse the D), but maybe giving Vereen more touches isn’t a bad thing.  Guess it will be a while before we get to see both TE playing together healthy, but between our RBs and receivers, I think we have just as many weapons as any other team(Gronk is key with the blocks too).

  • Monstatroll

There is a lot of ifs in your rant. Just saying, but IF things go the way you just predicted and the worst you can come up with is going 3-3 in the Super Bowl for a guy than I would still say that’s still a pretty impressive career. Isn’t Elway 2 and 5 in Super Bowls? What a bum!

Not to mention, these arguments are so subjective. Didn’t Montana lose in the NFC championship game 4 times? So failing at the game to get to the Super Bowl is better than getting there and losing now? Whatever…

  • Sicko

Lol, go away you piece of shi t. Love the fact you bring up two teams that went to the Super Bowl 16 and 27 years ago in your 3-4 mark. How about the Brady era at 3-2? At least that’s relevant to the conversation about this era in Pats’ history. Name a team in the last 30 years that has had this much success besides the 49ers? And, even they had a 5 year gap from their 3rd and 4th championships.

Bottom line, the Patriots is the MOST successful franchise in this era of free agency in the NFL period. End of discussion.

If you are a hater and troll please just move on and go to your own teams’ web site and join in their misery.

  • Uncle Buck

Nice win indeed.  This team has shown some strong endurance and when someone goes down the leak just seems to patch itself.  No doubt losing Gronk hurts in many ways, but they put up some pretty nice numbers without him and they have a ton of options. Love bringing the running backs into the passing game.  Well, despite the naysayers and troll/haters, there are 4 teams left and the Pat’s are one of them.  Yet another AFC Championship game comes through Foxborough, ho hum.  Does this ever get old ?  No.  I can hardly wait.

Oh and Tito,… laughable. Once again you’re on the outside looking in.  I  won’t even dignify your stupidity and ignorance with a direct reply.

  • trollhunter

worst reffed game of all time.Never ever have i seen more blown calls.

  • trollhunter

HOW ABOUT  THOSE PACKERS  HA HA HA HA YOU F ING LOSER

  • TEX

Not saying they will but they should be able to take care of the Ravens. Ravens will hang tough for awhile but in the end they will run out of gas.

  • TJ89

Heard other teams in the league are complaining the Pats cheat with the quick snaps. NFL looking into a rule giving the other team a chance to get set. Go Pats!

  • FLPatsFan

Think the Patriots will handle the Ravens.  The high of the OT win over the much better Denver team will fissile out next weekend.  You can play on emotion only so long.  Just ask the Jets those 2 years they went to the AFC Championship.  Eventually, talent wins out.  Besides, playing 6 quarters of football this late in the season?  Not sure if that will help their cause. Regardless of who wins, I wouldn’t want to face the Niners and Kaepernick. That kid is on fire.  Who stops him if you have to play San Fran in the Superbowl?

  • ILoveHockey

Well i don’t see Kaepernick having a wide open Middle of the field with Wilfork and Love there. Part of the reason he had so much room was GB refused to adjust from their game plan, even after half time- Pats will get beat by something for only so long, they tend to make a lot of in game adjustments, with Kaepernick being a rookie- I don’t like his chances trying to counter on such a big stage.

That being said- the Ravens are no sure thing, that D is looking pretty healthy- And Lewis is looking like he still has a few years left!

  • Shennessey

THE GIANTS 2-0 against the Pats and 2 super bowls in 5 years!!!!!!! At least the Pats won’t get beat again by the Giants

  • Anonymous

I’ve looked at the Gronk play a few times in slo-mo and it seems like he went down, rolled on his shoulder, then his arm. It didn’t look bad enough to hurt the arm, but then again, we don’t know how bad the arm was in the first place. Wasn’t the play he originally broke the arm on an “iffy” play too?

  • Fab4ever

Indeed another hater who loses all objectivity because of said hate…Kubiak is a bad coach? Since when? If he wants to call the Pats lucky, fine. I’ll take luck over unlucky any day of the week. 3 components to win are talent, health and luck! You can’t win without all of those coming into play. And as far as the Montana/Brady comparisons go, the simple fact that Brady is mentioned in the same stratosphere as Joe Montana is testimony enough. It’s what makes sports so great…Montana played in a different era…he was the best of his time. Brady is arguably the best of this era….9 conference title games? The possibility of 6 Super Bowls? Shennessey’s argument is purely comic….factually wrong and he comes off as sour grapes, envious…one of the worst of all human emotions….

  • Fab4ever

That’s because your QB didn’t get “lucky” this year moron…he threw more picks than Eddie Van Halen has in his guitar case…..

  • Anonymous

    So…who cares?

  • Bruinman86

Vereen poses a huge threat with regards to recieving, which is a huge advantage the Pats now have. I realize he’s a pretty strong guy, but how is his blocking and ability to pick up blitzes? If he’s good there, than this guy is a huge asset.

  • Sicko

Yeah, the Giants are playing golf you loser. How about 3 Super Bowl wins in 12 years and making the big dance 5 times. How about the best record in all of football for the past 5 years? So I guess your point is you would rather not make the playoffs than go to the Super Bowl and maybe lose? Really?
