FOXBORO — According to multiple reports and sources, Rob Gronkowski was scheduled to have surgery Monday to repair his left forearm, which was re-injured in Sunday’s win over the Texans. He is out for the remainder of the playoffs, a fact Bill Belichick all but conceded Monday during his conference call with reporters.

“It’s disappointing to not have Rob available, but I thought that Shane [Vereen] and Hooman [Michael Hoomanawanui] both did a great job of stepping into the game yesterday and playing a significant role in terms of number of plays and their production, maybe more than was anticipated,” Belichick said.

When pressed further about the risk of putting Gronkowski out on the field in a compromised situation, Belichick refused to elaborate. Belichick was asked if Gronkowski’s arm 100 percent coming into last night’s game to the best of his knowledge.

“I covered that [Sunday],” Belichick said. “He was cleared medically. I don’t have anything to add to it.”

Was he told of any added risk in putting him out there?

“I have nothing to add to it,” Belichick said.

Gronkowski suffered the latest injury on New England’s second drive of the game when he dove to make a catch on the deep right sideline in front of the Patriots’ bench. Wearing a white protective wrap on the forearm, he landed out of bounds on the arm and immediately went to the bench, wincing in pain. He was tended to by team doctor Tom Gill before leaving to have x-rays, which showed the forearm, broken on Nov. 18, was re-injured.

Gronkowski had surgery on Nov. 19 and missed five games before returning on Dec. 30 against the Dolphins, catching a touchdown from Tom Brady.

what happened to playing with a cast on?

  • Bigbob

    Larry Wilson/ Safety:
In a game against Pittsburgh in 1965 he ignored doctor’s orders and, while playing with casts on two broken hands, intercepted a Bill Nelsen pass for a go-ahead 35-yard touchdown return in the 21-17 win on November 7.
Come on Gronk dont be a Pu55y..

  • Julia’s Dad

I think Gronk needs to start drinking Whole Milk.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Very sad not to be watching this very special player.  Very happy that this is not the Red Sox.  Gronk would be getting medical opinions until June and scheduling surgery in August.

  • Bruinman86

I wondered that same thing myself.  I remember Bruschi doing it years ago.  Are there different rules for the position they play? or was the break close to a joint, thus making it difficult to have a cast on and bend the joint?

  • Bruinman86

I appreciate what you are saying, but a Broken hand and Broken arm are different things.  Having a hand in pain is better than an arm in pain, dangling! Plus the Pats have a ton of money invested in this kid and won’t risk losing out big on him for 1 game.  A game they won handily without him.

  • ILoveHockey

Beyond that, players are not allowed to re-enter a game until approved by doctors

  • LGiant4091

Why cant he play with a cast on?……defensive linemen have been doing it for decades?…he could still catch the ball…..I am not a doctor but it seems as though he could do that…

  • Fab4ever

It’s a shame really….I was optimistic that Gronk could return and contribute, show the world what he is, a physical freak….but it ain’t gonna happen.

  • Guess

Should have placed it in an old fashion cement cast and use that to whack the opposing players instead of a soft cast..

  • Bobsheehan20

should be using a cast with a thong wrapped around it that BB Jones wore

  • Nastyfoot

VERY few ripped 300+ LB. 4.5 timed guys playing defense in 1965 .

  • Keebs

I was wondering myself why he wasn’t put back in a hard cast specifically for the games for a little more protection considering I’ve seen guys doing it for years. But it’s obvious that the Dr’s were just plain wrong. His arm was clearly not healed. This was no fluke accident. He wasn’t ready. They should’ve realized it 2 weeks ago when he was blocking with one arm. In all honesty, I would’ve made damn sure that that arm was ready before putting him in. They were 5-1 without him. Of course you want him for playoff games, but I think they should’ve waited to see if they made the SB to bring him back. That would’ve given him almost another month for it to properly heal.

  • Daysofthenew

this kid better toughen up.  What an embarrassment seeing him wimpering on the sidelines… wincing like that.  Thatta boy Gronkowski… go sit in the sun out in AZ while your teammates (most of which are JUST as banged up as you) strap it on and go to battle next week!

  • Boston_Sports

Sad Gronk is out yet again. Brady’s clock is ticking away and Gronk is missing these great playoff games. I wish him well and hope he heals completely.

  • Johnny Spygate

Good ol’ Belichick.  Win at ALL costs.
Ask Ted Johnson if he’s surprised that BB would put a players health in jeopardy.

  • Just Curious

is it me or did gronk return too soon?
why did he play against the dolphins?
..was he really needed that game?

  • Schwank

Too bad.  My initial thoughts (really) when he lined up out wide was don’t risk the guy in that manner. Boom what happens he get’s shaken up.  The replay looked fairly pedestrian.  But I’m sure with a broken bone, (we don’t the type of break it was) the surgery and whatever hardware he had installed in there, it was susceptible to blunt trauma.  I’m sure it was healed.  X-rays prove that.  But I’ll bet it wasn’t as strong as before.  However, the force against that hardware could have caused the re-break.  The hardware aids the healing process but doesn’t provide an additional strength to the bone.  But I’ll bet if the the screws or the plate can cause irritation and pain they can also maybe rebreak the bone when unnatural trauma ensues.  That’s what I think happened.  I mean really when Lloyd fell on his shoulder a few weeks back I thought he was done for the year and that looked 3X times worse than what Gronk did.  It was just a freak thing.  I hope the new break is clean repaired and then I hope the hardware is removed before next year.  Then he should be good as new.

  • Keebs

Don’t you think the Dr’s would know all that? It’s really not that hard to understand; his arm was NOT fully healed. Why are people calling this a freak thing or a fluke accident. A freak thing would be him breaking his other arm. You can’t always trust an X-Ray to say that something is 100% healed considering some breaks don’t show up on X-Rays which has happened to me before. He wasn’t ready to play. It’s that simple.

I just wished Gronk was saved another week as he was not needed vs the Texans.  He will be needed against the Ravens.  It is just unfortunate

  • Uncle Buck

Yep, that’s coach BB alright.  Never cared about a players health ever.  Win at any cost.  You really are a classless jackazz without a clue in the world.

  • Uncle Buck

My guess is it is a combination of the specifics of the injury and the position he plays.  I don’t remember seeing too many guys in “skill positions” playing with a cast over the years.  He is a unique talent but his style of play lends itself to injuries.  He really is cut from a different cloth and I don’t think he has passed the “I’m indestructible” phase of his life yet. I hope he heals up well and has a big year next year.

  • Uncle Buck

Get back Loretta.  Sorry, just had to say that.

According to coach, the medical staff cleared him.  They’ll be ok vs Baltimore.

  • trollhunter

    ok ok that was funny

  • Bruinman86

    So true…

  • Wmeritz

For Pete’s sake did anyone see that cast on his forearm!

  • Anonymous

    what a shame

  • Bruinman86

His body type, size and weight puts a tremendous amount of strain on his body every time he takes a tumble, let alone an awkward catch that requires him to dive or roll over. And you know defenders have to use a ton of force to take him down or stop him. Which reminds me – They are facing Bernard Pollard this weekend. Gulp.

  • ytsurk

    Uncle slob you loser.

  • Zexey

He was NOT fully healed…. that simple….. look at the film on 1st running play he did not engage the defender with his arm. He turned using the opposite shoulder instead.
It’s a business he’s a big cog in the wheel.. making big $$ … but still a very short sited decision that hopefully will not jeopardize the remainder of his career
