| Tom Brady on end of Patriots’ season: ‘We didn’t earn it’ | 01.20.13 at 10:43 pm ET |
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady offered no excuses for the Patriots’ 28-13 loss to the Ravens, a game that was entirely one-sided in a second-half that featured Baltimore outscoring New England 21-0.
“We obviously didn’t play very well. You don’t play very well against a good team, it’s not going to be very competitive. It’s unfortunate. We just didn’t make critical plays when we needed to,” said Brady. “Whatever we did, we didn’t execute it well. The name of the game is execution. If you don’t execute well against a good team, you’re not going to come up on the winning end.”
Added Brady: “That’s part of the competition. You had the opportunity to win the game. We came up short. There’s frustration. We wish we could have done better. But they’re not going to give it to you. We didn’t earn it. They earned it. They played a good game.”
Brady briefly addressed his team’s struggle with clock management at the end of the first half. With 26 seconds left, Brady scrambled for three yards to the Baltimore 7-yard line. Rather than calling an immediate timeout (with approximately 16 seconds left) that would have given them a shot or two at the end zone, the Patriots tried to line up and only called the time out with four seconds remaining, enough time only to attempt a field goal that gave New England a 13-7 advantage at the half.
“We had one timeout left. We were trying to save that for the field goal,” said Brady. “We felt really good about where we were at the half. We just didn’t come out and execute very well in the second half.”
The Ravens scored a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, taking a 14-13 lead, and from that point, Brady acknowledged that his team became one-dimensional while falling behind in the second half, and at that point, failed to “string enough good plays together” to score and stay in the game. Baltimore dominated the rest of the way, and the Patriots saw their season come to an end.
“We’ve lost before. It takes a while to get over,” said Brady. “It always comes to a screeching halt. That’s just the way that it is.”
