FOXBORO — Bill Belichick summed up the mood inside Gillette Stadium a day after the Patriots’ season came to an end with a 28-13 loss to the Ravens in the AFC championship.

“That’s the NFL. The last game, you play a game this time of year, you’re either [in] euphoria or it’s a crash landing,” Belichick said. “And for us yesterday, it was a crash landing. A year ago at this time, it was the other feeling.

“It’s one or the other. There’s no in between and there’s certainly no soft landing. The season is suddenly [over]. The season that is very much alive and with great hopes and expectations and energy suddenly crashes and it’s over. That’s the way it is and way it’s going to be for every team but one this year. That’s the NFL. It’s not going to change.

“That’s the way it is. Unfortunately, that’s where we were last night. That’s where we are today. It’s stopped. It’s over. We’re onto next year.”

BB was way too conervative in his coaching. Punting 2 times on the 34 and 35 yard lines in Raven territory, are you kidding me? The loss was all on him……………

One was 4th and 7 so I agree with that. There was no way you were going to hit a field goal with that wind, and in the first half it was a field position game and the ravens average starting position was inside the 15 and the D was doing good

Bill, You kept us airborne with a young defense all year. I have a feeling next year is going to be different with greater contributions on the defensive end, Yesterday was an anomolie and we were out toughed.

It is nice to be this spoiled. Superbowl visit every year- yeah it would be nice. Game is over, move on with your lives. The team is good enough to compete next year, barring injuries, we will be watching them in the playoffs again next year….. isn’t there a hockey game on today?

This loss is not Belichick’s fault.  The players did not execute.  The receivers dropped a lot of passes and after Talib’s injury the secondary went to absolute crap.  In my opinion, the Pats need to cut ties with McDaniels and his unimaginative play calling.  I think it’s also time to let Wes Welker find a new place to play.  Two years in a row the momentum of  the pats’ final game has swung away after a big Wes Welker drop.  Slot receivers are a dime a dozen this year, and Brady made Welker, not the other way around.

The Pats need to find a creative O.C. who can utilize all their weapons. (Where the hell was Shane Vereen all night?) A free agent slot receiver who can be relied upon. And then in the draft they need to address needs at Cornerback and Defensive End.  They need to have a championship level pass rush again.

Bottom line: Each team has 3-5 real “impact” type players. By week 18, the winning team will usually be those with the most of their “impact” players still playing healthy and able to contribute at a their normal high level.
Unfortunately we will never have a “fantasy” football game based on roster.  While watching Patriot games, the number one hope is always to escape with no injuries. While watching your future opponent play you secretly hope no bad karma results from semi-hoping their impact players get nicked – not career threatening – but not able to play next week…
Going into playoffs I had the dangerous thought that everything was for once actually, health-wise, coming together for this playoff run. Gronk would be back full speed, Talib and Denard would be healthy, pass rush guys getting healthy, starting OL was finally healthy.

Also: Our team is maybe too level-headed for being successful in huge – high drama games where emotion can have a significant impact.  Yes, everyone should be “up” for this game, but we all know there is emotion and then there’s REAL EMOTION.  I laugh at outsiders calling the Patriots arrogant. They are humble to a fault, Maybe the fans and media are arrogant, but BB does not allow outspoken employees. Ryan got the Jets to a few championship games with an arrogant attitude and a team that bought into playing up to the boasts (lack of talent eventually caught up). Maybe next year Tom needs to get fighting mad and start yapping about being on a mission and get the team rocking, we definitely need a defensive player to step up and be a statement maker on and off the field, someone with Teddy’s fire to rally the defense on the sidelines. Sometimes Tom does that but was cold and numb looking yesterday on the bench.

You make a few really interesting points there.  I was hopeful too that they were getting healthy at the right time, but turns out that the plate in Gronk’s arm really was a big liability for him.  You might be right about the Pats being humble to the fault, though “humble” may not quite be the right word for it.  Whatever the case, it was clear Baltimore was the tougher team last night, the more intense team.  I do think the Patriots actually are a fairly physical team, just not in the top 3 or 4 in the league.

I slightly disagree with the idea that they look disinterested or cold/numb–that look on their faces didn’t really sink in until midway through the 4th quarter when things were getting out of hand.  That said though, I got the impression watching yesterday’s game that the Pats team just didn’t have the same belief or emotion on the field that the Ravens played with.  When you get things going at the right time, you just know it, and the Ravens are that team this year.  Props to them.  I do think that should the Pats manage to get back to this point with a healthy roster, they have a very good shot, but what they truly need is almost a bully-like, ‘we’re going to do this and find a way” mentality.

Us Pats fans got a little spoiled early in the 2000′s with how easy they made it look, but you truly gain an appreciation for how hard it is to be that one last team standing after so many years without the Lombardi Trophy.  Truth is, they were very close to having 2 more, but if they keep knocking on the door, I think they’ll break through again eventually.  They just have to have the right combination of health and momentum going for them… and that physical attitude we both agree they need more of.

Yes Bill it was. Very poor showing. But you, Brady, Bob Kraft and all the Patriots have lots to be proud of. The rest of the NFL wishes they had your success. Thank You.
