FOXBORO — A very solemn Wes Welker was again forced to answer difficult questions following another season-ending loss in the playoffs.

Last year, it was a second-and-11 drop in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI that would’ve extended a series deep in Giants’ territory, and likely allowed the Patriots to run out the clock. They lost to the Giants 21-17.

This year, Welker had a pass right in his hands for a first down in the third quarter as the Patriots were leading 13-7 and driving for a score that could have made it a two-possession game. Instead, on third-and-8 at the Baltimore 34, Welker dropped the ball and the Patriots had to punt.

Baltimore drove the field and took the lead for good when Joe Flacco hit Dennis Pitta from five yards out.

Just before the drop, Welker was drilled by Bernard Pollard on a reception near midfield. Did it affect him on the drop?

“I was fine. I was fine. Just a missed opportunity,” Welker said.

Then came the questions about his future.

Does Welker, without a contract now for next season, think he’ll be back in 2013 with the Patriots?

“I’m not sure. I’m not worried about that right now,” Welker said.

What does he take away from this season?

“I’ll have to take the next few weeks and figure that out,” Welker said.

How difficult is it to go into offseason with uncertainty?

“I’m really not worried about it all,” he said. “It’s a tough loss and just trying to get over it at the moment.

Would he be upset if the Patriots franchised him again?

“Like I said I’m not worried about any of it,” he said. “Obviously, yeah. We made it to the AFC championship and did some good things along the way. Just wasn’t enough in the end.”

How does he move on after another hard postseason loss?

“Same way I did last time,” Welker said, referring to Super Bowl XLVI. “Sun will come up tomorrow and try to move on.”

    I thought it was Stewart?

who wrote this crap? the Angels have a one game winning streak and Lester is not pitching.

  • mike

i like Wes but i think it time to move on the money they give him they could give someone to help this terrible  defense

  • daddy butch

donno wes, at some point you’ve got to make the clutch catches in games that matter……………….

He may not admit it, but it’s quite possible he got his bell rung on the previous play. Unlike some fans, I’m not ready to let him hang out to dry. I would LOVE to see Welker back next year (and expect to).

This season it seems as if Wes has dropped an “easy one” every game.  I think what makes it less noticeable, or tolerable is the fact that he holds on to some balls that he had no business holding onto after massive hits. That being said…This last drop was huge once again.

they need a real wide receiver that can do several things.  go deep, across the middle, quick out.  they need more speed.

Many things can be said about this game, but the only one that matters is that the Ravens played like they wanted it more. The Pats seemed out of sort right from the start. The hit on Ridley’s fumble was maybe a penalty and other than that the Ravens just plain out-played the Patriots on this day.

The sun would have come up to-day if Wes baby could catch a football ALL THE TIME!!!.
His third down drop yesterday could have meant Pats in Super Bowl and last year’s drop that would have killed the clock and meant a Pats victory are hard to take.
    Bye bye Welker,

  • Allfor1

offer welker a 2 year deal at more reasonable money( 14 mill.). If he declines then say goodbye and move on.

  • jtp

Time to go. The foot jokes before the Jets game, the drop last year, the drops in the 1st and 3rd quarters this year are telling. Can you say Nomar?

  • Tsvikakohl

Just a bad luck of combination , Gronk was missing for the 3rd&4 , Talib Inj changed everything in the D , and when you play a good team  its hard to adjust .

  • Batsandgats

You mean like Vereen’s drop that killed a drive? or Ridleys fumble? yeah he got a concussion but Welker had his bell rung on the previous catch. If he were black nobody would be talking about this because they drop routine passes all the time. Branch dropped the pass on 3rd down AFTER Welker’s drop on 2nd down, yet its not talked about. Hernandez dropped a pass in the next drive. Nobody talks about the catch Moss could have made in the 2007 Superbowl where he didn’t even try for it.

  • Batsandgats

nobody would be talking about this if he were black, this is nowhere near as big as the drop in the Superbowl, but everyone fails to realize that it was SECOND down on that drop and Branch dropped one right after. Moss failed to catch a potential game winning pass in 2007 and its not even mentioned because blacks drop the ball all the time. Nobody is going to mention the  Vereen drop? should we get rid of him too?

  • Batsandgats

at least one fan has common sense

  • Batsandgats

I mean did anyone see Welker after the game? he was black and blue from all of the hits, he plays his heart out for this team and we are talking about a drop when he had what 8 catches for 100+ yards? The entire team made mistakes, Brady threw interceptions. The defense sucked, I guess because they had to change their entire game plan once Talib was out

it wasn’t a penalty because he was running the ball.

  • Swadaddy01

wow his bell was rung and they talk about him because he is a top 5 wr in the NFL hope new England do step away from him maybe the ravens will try to sign him. it has nothing to do with him being white and not of color.

It’s a shame Wes missed that catch but he makes so many that others would have alligator arms on. Cut Wes some slack. There’s more wrong with the way this team played than one slot receiver!

  • Pats fan

The loss can’t be pinned on a single play or player. The team looked stressed and gloomy from the beginning….there was no spirit, no vibe! I did not see a single high five between team mates… Is the team being overworked before these crucial games? The first quarter was a total waste!
