Report: Tom Brady fined $10K for slide into Ed Reed 01.23.13 at 8:16 pm ET

Tom Brady

Tom Brady was fined $10,000 for unnecessary roughness for his cleats-up slide into Baltimore’s Ed Reed in the first half of Sunday’s AFC title game against the Ravens, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

In the final minute of the second quarter, the New England quarterback was scrambling for extra yardage when he slid, and it appeared his upraised leg hit Reed. According to Reed, Brady has since reached out to him to apologize for the incident, and Reed later added that he and Brady are “all good.”

“I know he’s a great player,” Reed told reporters. “I respect Brady and his game for all it stands for, and I know he’s not a dirty player. And emotions get going in the game.”

If that were Peyton Manning, there’d be no fine. Heck, if it were Big Ben, he’d be suspended right on the spot. Silly fine, if you ask me.

  • Wickie100

They’re assuming an awful lot here folks, such as the assumption that Brady has the coordination to slide and at the same time try to up end a would be tackler,  Be serious!  More likely it was self defense.  By the way, the pathetic passing continues – under 59% over the last 7 or 8 games and way too many passes at the ankles and behnd his receivers, like the one in last year;s SB that Welker keeps getting blamed for.  This must improve or I’m afraid my favorite player of all time will never see the promised land again.

  • Boston_Sports

Hummmmm…….is the commish going to fine Pollard and Suggs………..seems the commish has it in for Brady. And they say Brady always gets the benefit of all calls.  Oops, there goes that point. Pollard has been head hunting for years.

  • Monstatroll

I hear you, but lets be fair. Recievers need to make plays too. Even if they get hit in a bad spot like the hands:/

  • CAPatsFan

Wow. A bit suprised at the fine. I thought TB was just defending himself too. $10K to him is real chump change, though (probably has that in his wallet?). So, it’s probably more of a send a msg. fine than anything too deep.

  • Wisre11

I consider myself a pats fan, but Tom is no rookie. He wouldn,t like it if someone did that to one of his teamates

  • Justin3collins

The funny thing is he never wears cleats its always turfs. A cut block should be a fine then

  • Gray

its sad when I think I have to agree with ‘Steven A’ but it really looked like Brady was going into defense mode – I also happen to agree with the sentiment that Peyton wouldnt fined at all or fined less and Big Ben would have been Fined likely a lot more..

And im still waiting for league to reign in Pollards head (or knee) hunting

  • Really33

WOW.A little stain on Tommy boy’s permanent record.

  • Boy_wonder

he would never have done that, too much class.

  • BlindToTheTruth

Pollard for forcing Ridley to lower his head into Pollards. Do you cheerleaders watch the game?

  • brandonruns

I can already see the next headline: “REPORT: LEAGUE OFFICE SENDS BERNARD POLLARD A DOZEN ROSES”

  • http://www.facebook.com/derek.lee.82 Derek Lee

10 k.. wow.. He makes more than that, in less than a minute. And his wife in 13 seconds.

  • Chuckchamp

U obviously didn’t! Ridley didn’t lower his helmet to launching Pollard. Mr.Crown of the Helmet himself! He’s a cheapshot artist and you would rather pretend it was Ridley who was at fault, like last year when the photo of the ripping of Gronks ankle was taken all the Buzzards fans said he was just finishiing the tackle!Quack!!!

  • Chuckchamp

When do they announce the fine for Pollards 4rth patriot kill in 4 years?

  • Chuckchamp

He also received his bounty money from harbaugh and the killer.

  • Thenyyeti

Is the nfl going to call this the Pollard rule for if he hadn’t cried about it they would not of fined him

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003997287905 John Smith

Some of you clowns need to read the NFL rulebook. Helmet-to-helmet contact with RB’s is completely legal.

Stop whining and get tougher players Oh btw your qb kicks like a girl.

  • Abc

    you would know
I bet your mother kicks you too (and you like it)

  • Jimmy Freeze

Hey Dufus John Smith…Inadvertant Helmet to Helmet contact is legal…”spearing” or “intent to injure” isn’t…Ask James Harrison about the difference…Oops…forgot that the Steelers also get fined, for hits, too, but not the Baltimore criminals don’t…because the killer has found GOD, and gets his phoney act on ESPN 100 times per day.

  • sev

I agree that I think brady was just reacting and trying not to get hit, but regardless of his intentions, it’s still prob considered a dangerous play and falls into some category in the rule book.  I think if Brady was a dirty player, the fine would have been greater.  I’m sure most people, along with the NFL, looked at it and figured Brady was just reacting to getting hit.  If it was more than just a reaction to protect himself, I would think Brady would be smart enough to realize that he’s more apt to injury his leg than he is a defender flying in helmet and/or shoulder pads first.  Now some people were talking about how Brady said something along the lines of “you wanna play like that, we can play like that”, but I would bet that he was just emotional and that was his way of acting like he intentionally did it so as not to look like a scared b*tch that doesn’t want to get hit.  Once you show the D that their hits are getting to you, it only provides the D with more ammunition.  Too bad no Gronk or Talib.  Injuries to all teams suck cuz then you can never truly determine who the better team was….but that’s all sports so whatever.

  • Xo45thvols

Can’t wait to see a Patriot player hit someone hard enough to cause a concussion and then hear a little girl like you demand for that player to be banned from the league. Troll, BE GONE!

  • Xo45thvols

Unfortunately, never. But, have the reverse happen to someone like AP, and all hell is let loose.

  • Drew Bledsoe

He should have been fined for impersonating a q.b.

  • Sdfkl

Stop being a Homer. Brady gets all the calls. We love Spikes and Rodney Harrison right…… The two dirtiest players in the league. Pollard did nothing illegal.

  • Patsfan

This is all Karma my friends.  From Spygate to Rodney Harrison. From Spikes Flexing after his hit on Fred Jackson and us cheering. We loved Harrison would for matching his fines for charities. I love the Pats, but we need to prove we can win after Spygate. It’s going on 10yrs….. I hate when people ask me to name the O-line.  I just tell them “Brady is better than Manning” I mean right? WHo cares about the players on the O-line?  Peace

Giselle and so much more graceful than Tom!!

  • Anonymous

It seems like the more years that Brady plays, it’s not going to resemble those first 4-5.  But, Tom has to stop running into the ref and then kicking his leg up on the slide!  It’s looking “wussy.”  Frankly, I think he gets the Yips in these big games; playing not to lose, rather than being agressive.

  • Qtrback

Should have run the messly 4 yards for the first down…..it’s football Tom and there was no tomorrow….reminded me of another qtrback that played for the Pats….what was his name again, Tony what??????  p.s. I am a Pats fan but come it’s football!

  • Anonymous

Last week, Gostkowski gets fined for his vicious horse collar.  This week, it’s Brady for his potentially life-threatening kick.  Makes me wonder how much a Patriot would get fined for hitting a defenseless receiver in the head.  Anyone?

  • Betty White

The cleats up during the slide was a bush league move. I don’t fall for the explanation he was trying to protect himself when he is w/out a doubt the most protected QB in the league. Every Baltimore defender in that game (also every defender in the league for that matter) knows going in to be very careful when pass rushing Brady so spearing him ( Callahan said this morning he probably thought he was going to get speared by Reed, again, try another excuse) as he’s sliding, please they know better! TB 12 ought to be fined 10K by everyone of his teammates for bailing on them and not showing some sack and running for that 1st down on 4th and 4 with still over seven minutes left, inside the Baltimore 25 yard line for God’s sake! He had the space to make it but it would have meant getting hit hard, maybe by Nagata #92. That was huge! He blew a chance to get 7 right there with a ton of time left and all there time outs w/them. So when some Pats fans want to discuss Brady as the greatest QB ever, right up there with Montana……get a grip as they say.

  • tk

Bradys all about class.  He’s our guy and lets support him!  He wouldn t do anything illegal cause hes a Patriot.  GO P-A-T-S!!!!

  • Bdpetroni

You’re an embarrassment to Pats fans. Ridley DID duck his own head into Pollard’s. The collision was Ridleys fault. Pollard was hitting him with the shoulder.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jeremy.mason.16 Jeremy Mason

typical BS boston response.  Curse curse curse…go eat some sour grapes!

  • http://www.facebook.com/jeremy.mason.16 Jeremy Mason
