Reports: Patriots set to add another CFL pass rusher 01.26.13 at 5:11 pm ET
By

Multiple reports now indicate that the Patriots are set to sign former Northeastern University star Jason Vega, who has played the last two seasons in the Canadian Football League with Winnipeg.

The 25-year-old Vega, a Brockton native who checks in at 6-foot-4 and 256 pounds, projects to be either a defensive end or outside linebacker at the NFL level. Vega recorded 12 sacks over the past two seasons for Winnipeg, and as a collegian at Northeastern, he finished with 41 sacks over four seasons. Vega is the second CFL player who has agreed to a deal with the Patriots over the last week — New England has also reached an agreement with former USC defensive lineman Armond Armstead.

We need REAL pass rushers, and REAL outside and downfield receiving threats….When we address this,we will be back…

  • vision

Go Bill go- we are still behind you Bill- In Bill we trust

    Next year pats win SB.

  • Terry G

This is looking outside the box which seems to be a strength of Bill. Now sign Welker, Talib and Vollmer, and draft well and we will be back. The defense is almost there, keep Talib and look for more defensive help in the backfield. Go Pats, This is a good start.

  • Ravid1920

G#d Damnit Belichick.  You need playmakers to win!! Get playmakers! Not castoffs and CFL players.  Send some picks to the Jets for Revis. Also franchise Talib and sign Welker!  Get some studs and keep some studs!! Screw the cap. Your’s and Brady’s time are running out. You NEED that 4th ring to end all the spygate nonense and stamp yourselves as the greatest! You’re not going to do that with Branch,Arrington,Chung and a CFL star

  • Ty

Cameron Wake was a former CFL guy, and he’s turned into one of the NFL’s best pass rushers, so the Pats are obviously hoping for something similar with the guys they’ve signed. Hope it happens for them

  • Dano S

Pats Predictions for 2013 1.0 Pats sign Wes Welker,Jake Ballard,Kyle Arrington and Danny Woodhead.
Sign NFL Free Agents Gosder Cherilus OT Lions, Leodis McKelvin CB/KR Bills and Danario Alexander WR
Chargers.Pats Draft 1 Sylvester Williams DT NC,2 Jamar Taylor CB Boise St, 3 Denard Robinson WR Michigan, 7 Josh Boyce WR TCU and 7 Brian Schwanke C Cal.

  • Bruinman86

Hey, it’s worth a shot.  The more options the better.  Although a high draft pick might be the best bet.

  • WEEI69

    yawn

  • Monstatroll

Do you honestly think the Jets would send Revis to the Pats? I mean they’re stupid but not THAT stupid.

  • Jakethestripper

He’ll be cut by 5/1/13.  Just sayin

  • Boslad

You can’t “screw the cap”, the NFL cap is a hard cap. Also, don’t over react to players Bill signs now, these guys may not even make it to camp this summer. He’s stacking bodies for evaluation right now, and that’s a smart thing to do. We, and Wes Welker may not like it but Bill can franchise him for another season. I hope it does not come to that but it just might. Signing Talib, yes absolutely and they need at least one more good to exceptional corner. Once Talib went out and the Ravens adjusted their attack, the Pats could not stop Flaco and his receivers.

Thanks so much. I’m sure that BB would welcome football advice from a grocery clerk.

  • Anonymous

I’d say that would be a damn good off season!

  • Ravid1920

If the Pats have the asking price then yes. Its a business first. The Jets know they are going to get rebuilding top dollar for Revis so if the Pats want to give it up…they will and the Jets will send us Revis.  Jets are rebuilding. They dont care if the Pats win now because they know its the Pats division.

  • Ravid1920

Yeah ok.  All I know is BB hasnt won since the majority of Parcells guys were out there on the field

  • Old Time Hockey

all I have to do is read the part about trading picks to the Jets and I know you are an idiot. The Jets are not trading Revis to the Pats!!!!!

  • Ron Curtin

SMART MOVE: TRADE MALLETT NOW! This year ther are several teams with new GMs and a need for a starting QB, Trading Mallett for a second round pick this year and conditional first round pick next year would make sense for both teams.

  • Justoneguysopinion

I don’t know. This is the Jets we’re talking about.

  • Schwank

Well thought out and constructive.   Gives me something to research.  Thanks.

  • Brent Lafond

Cameron Wake is a former CFL star before he signed with the Dolphins so no one should knock a pass rusher coming from the CFL because u neva no.

  • Your mama

    Awful

  • Chrisindanvers

Interesting way to approach the off season, particularly where the Patriots do not have as many picks this year. Trying to pull in players now is a great way to go. A week ago, there was an article that discussed several teams that had been looking to the CFL this past year as a way to get surplus, sometimes under the radar talent. Obviously the Patriots are one of these teams.

It appears that this is yet another wave of renewed interest in players from the CFL.  Notice how this does go in phases. In the 80s, there was a lot of interest in CFL quarterbacks, who made a successful venture to the NFL. In the 90s, the same thing happened to receivers. With some of the rule changes in the NFL, now is a good time to scout out the CFL and see what might players might help out.

Now, let’s hope when the time comes, they sign the players they need to bring back.

  • Grayesun

After a week to reflect on the Patriots dismal effort against the Ravens, one thought keeps recurring – did BB really have the Pats ready to play this game…did he have a game plan to beat this team?  Half-time adjustments, seriously…another punch in Pats mouth and a flurry of cheap shots on the field by the highly motivated Ravens goes unanswered.

  • Soxpatslex44

Been a Pats fan since the beginning (1960).
Lived through all the bad teams.
    Thrilled with Bill and Brady.
    Have utmost confidence in them.
I believe there is one more SB on the agenda!
Thanks for all the great years.

  • Terry G

Sox Pats you hit it on the head. We have lived thru the bad times and they were bad, no TV for the pats, which is why many in this areaa were rooting for the Giants back then for that was the team showed on TV.
I have faith in the abilities of Bill and Tom, and have enjoyed this team for many years. Look what this team has given us over the recent years. Don’t get spoiled for we have been given what many teams do not have, consistencies. Enjoy the ride, we cannot win all the time, but the product out on the field makes it possible to be involved in every game.
Got Pats, perhaps next year, Bill and trust are already at work

  • Dansdrs

you can have revis hes a class a jerk

  • Dansdrs

Parcells didn’t win crap here he ran out of the super bowl because he couldn’t be god.

  • jj

Here’s the problem: Brady has had no good defenses to back him up since 2005 and its why he under-performs in these Superbowls and Playoffs now. He feels too much pressure because he knows the defense will f-up if he doesnt play great. Eli Manning, Flacco, Rothlisbeger, and now Wilson and Kapernick. No pressure because they know the defense will back them up if they have a sub-par game.

  • Superdad1946

Any CHEAP slot receivers available in the CFL?

  • pebble pete

    unreal my picks exactly !!!!

  • pebble pete

fat chance the pats would give up two players or draft picks
plus pay revis 16mil a year which hes goin to get on the open market…

  • mikepatriot

u are wrong.Well half right. Get rid of Branch, and you make room on the roster for a younger, taller better reciever, but don’t empty the bank here for any wide out or pass rusher. It’s corners, safeties, bigger back.

  • mikepatriot

Finally some cogent analysis! I agree on every point, especially corners which before last year’s draft i advocated as a wish list on these boards and was in a miniscule minority. I also think we need another power back ala Corey Dillon or a halfback for power push in the red zone against the Ravens/ niners/giants in these playoff games. Our smaller backs are not gonna keep drives alive in the pressure playoffs against the big fronts. I know it probably wont happen, BB will roll with the backs he has, but it would definately help. Corners and maybe safety are the TOP priority, though. Look how the crappy coverage affected us and win loss total/seeding in the first 5 or six games. The weakest link.

  • mikepatriot

The pats simply got exposed, regardless of how tough and physical the birds were. the shortcomings they had during the first 5 or 6 games were resoundingly obvious in the secondary. Pats need major help in the secondary. Had talib been healthy the whole game, best case scenario, the pats still lose by 7 to 10. Keep or replace Talib with someone as good and acquire another good corner, dump Arrington and Gregory and pick up a Pollard/Harrison wannabe. Had the pats been able to shut down the big Raven pass plays(with a real secondary) the offense gets its hands on the ball alot more, keep more drives alive and convert and squeeze out a win there.

  • innovator1

I’m sorry, you are dead wrong, and just showed that you don’t understand the concept of scheme…I don’t care if you have darelle Revis on one side and Peanut Tillman on the other,,if they have to cover guys for five seconds or more,it allows the quarterback to go through his progressions…Any average receiver will get open with that amount of time…Pressure upfront from the outside consistently will force the qb to not only get rid of the ball sooner, but it will more than likely weaken his mechanics on his throws while affecting his accuracy…We haven’t had a true great pass rush since 2006,and our defense has been average to below average since, and yes,I’m including 2007….I’m not saying empty the bank on a wideout, but we need TWO guys who can draw the safeties away from the middle of the field and the short…Hypothetically if we end up with,we’ll say a Miles Austin, and a good rookie,Defenses will be forced to pick their poison, either leave the single coverage downfield, exposing them to giving up a long touchdown on any given play,or have gronkowski,Hernandez and Welker pepper you  to death if theyre in single coverage….Our running backs are more than adequate, just ask the experts….Good corners are great to have, stud pass rush will make the secondary look better than they are…I wanted Chris Givens and T.Y. Hilton all day on draft day,but Belichick decided that it was more important to have jake Bequette and Tayvon wilson…

  • innovator1

Not trying to be salty on you ,MikePatriot, but the last three playoff losses for us had the same things in common…..In 2011,Mark Sanchez had all day to throw, and noone could get open for brady,,,,In the superbowl,Eli didn’t have enough pressure(better pressure than against the jets though),and when we needed guys to stretch the field opening it up for the short, noone could get open…this year, flacco had all day,and again,,noone could get open…Again,,I’m not saying break the bank, but be smart with your draft picks and make better decisions in March and April,Belichick!!! Stop picking guys the year before you have a need at the position,it hasnt worked for us…He slit our throat with the ron brace pick in the second, because he was afraid wilfork was gone, and did the same thing picking Dontaq Hightower in the year before Brandon spikes is scheduled to be a free agent…We had four middle linebackers this year, and Hightower, though they say he’s versatile,is far,far better in the middle, and will be good, but we wouldve been better served THIS YEAR by either passing on Hightower, and going for Whitney Mercilus, who wouldve been a beautiful bookend for chandler Jones,or take hightower, and trade spikes for a second or a third, and play hightower in the middle…WE NEED PASS RUSH AND DEEP THREATS!!! This includes bringng richard seymour back, unless he’s trying to break the bank still, which I doubt…BTW LARRY FITZGERALD has a base salary of 5 million dollars in 2013,and has a roster bonus the folloing year for 18 million, which obviously he would renegotiate if he were here…Let demps run the special teams return game,,pass on edelman and Branch, grab a fitz or a Miles austin type(he’s going to get cut,cap reasons),and draft another kid who could fit the system, but one that can run…..OUr beloved Patriots are the only team who didnt have one guy on their team that could actually on any given play, get behind the secondary, barring a defensive coverage miscommunication,or mishap…Donte Stallworth provided that, and notice while Stallworth was out there that Brady completed 5 deep passes downfield??? The downfield threats open it up for EVERYBODY!!

  • mikepatriot

I need to be shown that i’m wrong. If BB goes the way you two guys are advocating, and the results are shown, than my asessment was incorrect. To the best of my knowledge, most local analysts are talking about the secondary. I’m for acquiring a taller, midling to good veteran reciever in place of Branch who can be had for small money. Stallworth had filled that role nicely, i agree. ” Pressure up front” will never be consistent with every play but fine, acquire one of these cfl “experiments” for small change to help Chandler and Ninko. It’s also worth noting, that in all the pats super bowl wins they did it with bigger running power backs. There are trends and thier are revolutions, that is a return to a previous style. I personally was always more partial to a Corey Dillion type who could take punishment and stiff arm whatever was in front of him.Was the ravens game a fluke, or can our present running backs punch it in against the elite defenses in the red zone during a playoff??? Can’t wait for the draft. i hear in advance that it wont be a very good one this year.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

It’s not depth that is needed.  The Pats need an IMPACT defensive lineman to complement Vince.  This means a pass rusher – Pro Bowl quality.  Same is true of the DBs  They need a big time guy back there someplace. Hopefully Jones becomes one of these guys. he had a good rookie season and early on looked like an impact guy.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Hmm.  I guess you grew up with him?

  • Wmeritz

The fact of the matter is that with all the draft picks which they have acquired over the years the Pats have drafted poorly on defense.

  • Jamaal

I hope they kick arrigton to the curve
