Robert Kraft worries lawyers, agents could ‘mess up’ any new deal for Wes Welker 02.02.13 at 12:33 pm ET

Wes Welker

Patriots owner Robert Kraft took a veiled shot at Wes Welker‘s representation on Friday, saying that lawyers and agents could “mess up” any new potential deal for the wide receiver.

Speaking with CSNNE in New Orleans, Kraft praised Welker — who is set to become an unrestricted free agent — but also offered a note of caution.

“I’d love him to be around, he’s a great guy,” Kraft said of Welker. “Like I said all along, it takes two sides to make a transaction and then we have to manage the lawyers and the agents that they don’t mess it up. I think Wes wants to be with us and we want him here so it’s just a matter of whether both sides can be intelligent.”

Welker, who played under the franchise tag last season, finished the year with 118 catches, 1,354 yards and six touchdowns. The 31-year-old has spent his last six seasons with the Patriots.

Yeah. Misleading tag line for the link. That says, “agents could mess up deal”, when Kraft said, “lawyers and agents could mess up the deal”. It’s a given that players use agents and the team uses lawyers so be fair and balanced!

  • Joborsky2002

What Welker needs to do, is voice what he wants, dont let it get to what the AGENTS AND LAWYERS want, come out and say it so people(PRESS) do not confuse what with what…Don’t hide behind Stealth walls, come out and say I want to be here…. Brady is getting a NICE salary next season over $20 mill, maybe he can cut 2-3 off that and share with his no.1 WR!!!!

  • jimromeisasass

bobby- you own the team. make the right call and don’t let it get to that point. pay the man dammit. i’m not going to list the slobs that have been brought in then cut w/in the season for larger $$$

  • RDee

All that means is that Mr. Kraft WON’T overpay period.

  • Tmbirtz

give welker a three deal he 32 years old three years 40.5 million with 18 million bounes done deal that 13.5 a year that what he wroth no more that what he wants

  • http://twitter.com/Ossurworld Russo

You may rest assured that Kraft refers only to Welker’s agent and lawyers.

  • San Diego Dreamer

3 years $36 Million with a 4th year option or buy out. He and Brady can retire together.

  • Pedro

Wes Welker will not be with the Patriots, They will not pay him. So spin it anyway you want. Doesn’t everybody leave because of money? Asante, Ty Law. the Patriots are cheap

  • Tmbirtz

bring welker back CB that got the CB he going to want a 6 year deal wroth arond 60 million i do see the pats bring him back for that much

  • Tmbirtz

ybe the pats are looking at one of this guys too hmmm Mike Wallace, Dwayne Bowe, Danny Amendola and Greg Jennings

  • Bob Kraft

All I see when I close my eyes is Wes dropping that pass, and an inevitable Super Bowl victory slipping through our fingers, you know, just as the ball did through his.

  • Bruinman86

Isn’t that always the case?  If not for agents, it’s likely all players would be making less money.

  • CAPatsFan

RK is sending a clear message, he’s not going to overpay. Obvious. Welker knows it (and so does his agent). This negotiation is going to go the way Welker wants (either to stay at a reduced rate or move on for more $). Can’t he be franchised again, though? I really like Welker but isn’t a healthy(?) Edleman, kind of a poor-man’s Welker (with potential)?

  • jimromeisasass

all i see is him getting us to the SB. a lot of missed opportunities in that game.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ZVFM2HRNC5CTO2OUXD4XTX65O4 Dennis

In other words, Kraft wants Welker to settle for less.

  • Cfn

are you joking.  three year deal at 33mil

  • Cfn

We need both Edleman and Welker in case one of them gets hurt. With Aaron, Gronk and Lloyd we should be good.  Use a draft pick to get a good WR we can develop.  They will not pay Talib, can kiss him good bye.

  • bguy

Unless Welker will take below market value for the chance to be with a consistent contender, he will NOT be back.  The Pat’s won’t franchise him with an 11+ million salary cap hit and will not give him $16 – 18 million guarantee for a 32 yr. old slot receiver.  I think they will put Aaron Hernandez as slot receiver with Gronk and Ballad,(giants) at TE.
The $$ will go to signing one or two guys to strengthen the secondary. (S + CB)

I just hope Welker realizes that he might be costing himself induction into the HOF someday because he wanted to grab every last $$.

  • bguy

NO WAY!! He just will not fit under the cap.  I can almost promise you he won’t get
3 yrs with $18 million guaranteed.  Unfortuneatly, his agent is telling him that is
the current market for a “slot” receiver.  It is NOT and Welker will realize too late.

  • bguy

Your handle is correct for you SD.  Dreamer.

  • bguy

Edelman gets injured alot.  He won’t be back unless he takes
close to the veteran minimum.  BB wants players that will be on
the field not on injured reserve.

  • bguy

Thanks for stating the obvious Dennis.
Have you ever seen the movie “Dumb and Dumber” ?

  • Gman

I disagree. From the close up angle I finally saw, several weeks ago, that was a tough catch. After all, he’s only 5-9 and isn’t that great a leaper. The problem is many fans have seen taller, more angular receivers make that play and that’s why they’ve been so upset with Welker. The problem Welker had this year is I think he let that play bother him too much at times. Not that I’m faulting Brady for the incompletion either, because the pocket started to collapse and he had to step up and throw on the run with a bad left shoulder to boot.

  • Fernjoe

You sure are dreaming!  If the Pats go with that deal, they are out of their minds.  Three years for 27 M is as high as I would go.  The Pats can lose the AFC Championship and SB w/o Welker as they did with him and his drops.

  • Fernjoe

This is even more ridiculous!  I don’t think there is anyone out there stupid enough to go with this amount.

  • bird from woonie

edelman cant stay healthy. neither can gronk

  • Dano S

Let’s say Pats do not reach agreement with Welker.Pats Predictions 9.0
Pats sign Ed Reed S Ravens,Sean Smith CB Miami,Brian Hartline WR Miami,Julian Edelman
    and Andre Smith OT Bengals.Draft 1 Trade for 2 and 4 2 Trade for 3 and 5
2 Ezekial Ansah DE BYU 3 Robert Woods WR USC 3 Brandon Williams DT Missouri Southern
4 Gavin Escobar TE San Diego St. 5 David Bakhtiari G Colorado
7 Kerwynn Williams RB Utah St 7 Baker Steinkuhler DE Nebraska.

  • MR.MAJISTIC

No way he make’s it out of N.E.,this off season…….he will get the franchise tag,if they don’t come to term’s!!!!!!!!

  • ssbgobruins

I’d rather see them invest more money in the defensive backfield.  The last game didn’t go to well after Talib got hurt.  He’s dropped too many 3rd down passes the last two years to be worth $12 million plus.  Gronk can catch the 3rd down passes now.

  • Chuckchamp

Welker isn’t worth more than 7 mil per. Great regular season WR/SR however in two big stage situations he’s dropped passes that have changed the fortunes of his team and not for the good of his team. He is however a great team guy and he is worth every bit of 7 mil per season for however many seasons they agree on.

  • Bagga

Brady,Wilfork,Mankins,Gronk,Hernandez all got paid at the top of their positions. They will not over pay!

  • jtp

can we just be done with the Wes Welker experiment? What good does 100 catches a year in the middle of the field do you if, during the playoffs against good defenses, the middle of the field gets taken away?
Two of the five best TEs in the league, along with a mediocre slot guy, should be plenty of bodies to roam the middle. Can we use the whole field like the rest of the league please? A true number 1 wideout with Lloyd as your number two would be pretty tough to stop.
You must make the defense defend the entire field.

  • Tmbirtz

i rather have mike wallace over welker wallace is young only 26 i would give wallace a 6 year deal with 56.4 million at 9.4 million a year with 20 million bouns

  • Donalmcl27

The 49er’s are in the mix, I’m not confident the Pat’s management will handle well
