Joe Flacco threw three touchdowns and Jacoby Jones returned a kick 108 yards as the Ravens held on to beat the 49ers, 34-31, in a bizarre Super Bowl XLVII at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Sunday night. Flacco finished 22-of-33 for 287 yards and three touchdowns in earning Super Bowl MVP honors.

Colin Kaepernick was on the verge of engineering the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history when it appeared the Ravens committed a blatant defensive holding by Jimmy Smith on Michael Crabtree in the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the Ravens’ 5 with just over a minute left. No call was made and the Ravens took possession at their 5 and killed off most of the clock.

The game ended when the Ravens took a safety on a punt with four seconds left, and then punted away to Ted Ginn. The 49ers specialist returned it 31 yards to midfield but was tackled as time ran out.

The game marked the first loss in six Super Bowls for the 49ers while the Ravens won for the second time in as many trips to the big game, winning Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa.

In a game that featured an electrifying halftime show by Beyonce and a 34-minute power outage minutes later in the third quarter, Kaepernick led his team from a 28-6 hole in the third quarter back to 31-29, passing for a score and running for another as San Francisco scored 23 points in just over 12 minutes. However, the Niners could not convert a two-point conversion that would have tied the game.

The Ravens jumped out to a 21-6 halftime lead thanks in large part to the sensational play of Flacco, as he threw three first half touchdowns. Ed Reed picked off Kaepernick and the Ravens gambled on fourth-and-9, but kicker Justin Tucker was tackled a yard short on a fake field goal. On the next drive, Flacco hit Jones for a 56-yard touchdown pass, putting Baltimore up 21-3.

Jacoby Jones opened the second half by taking the kick eight yards deep in the end zone and racing up the middle for the longest kickoff return in Super Bowl history.

Moments later, as San Francisco was facing third-and-13 in its own territory, the lights and power went out through most parts of the Superdome. The game was delayed 34 minutes as NFL officials and stadium administrators went into a frenzy trying to restore order and power.

After the lights came back on, the Niners were forced to punt. But on their next drive, they began a furious comeback. Crabtree caught a 31-yard TD pass. Frank Gore, who finished with 110 yards on 19 carries, ran around the right side for a 6-yard score after a Ginn punt return.

David Akers converted a field goal that cut the lead to 28-23. The Ravens added a field goal early in the fourth quarter, making it, 31-23. The Niners then scored on a Kaepernick 15-yard run. With a chance to tie the game, the Niners could not convert a two-point conversion. Reed appeared to be offsides on the corner blitz, but no call was made and the Ravens held a 31-29 lead.

After another Ravens field goal, Kaepernick got the ball back with a chance to win. The Niners drove to the Ravens’ 7. But with four chances, the Niners couldn’t punch it in.

only in America can a killer win the Super Bowl

  • Bruinman86

Should have been a holding or Pass interference call against the Ravens on the 4th and goal.  Total BS.

  • http://twitter.com/JLFCASH John Fahrer

Amen. The replacement refs came back for one last hoorah.

  • Allistereris

Refs won that game for the ravens that was horrid

  • http://twitter.com/JLFCASH John Fahrer

Yep. And even worse that he’s going to be praised for it too.

I remember how so many people didn’t want Roethlisberger to win two seasons ago but so many wanted Lewis to go out a winner. Very ironic.

  • patsfan

at least the whiny harbaugh lost, too bad the killer won

  • Captain Howdy

So much for the NFC being the dominant conference. I hate the Ravens but I was rooting for them today for some reason. I have turned into a big fan of Joe Flacco and I guess I’m just not a big fan of Colin Kaepernick. Ravens earned this championship as they beat just about the best in each playoff win. No easy road that’s for sure. Got a ton of breaks and turnovers but that’s what great teams do. Flacco will be able to back up the Brinks truck this off season. This guy was just insane during the playoffs.

  • Bruinman86

Almost as if the Fix was in!

  • Cfn

I live in SF and a Pats fan.  I was neutral on the game, but in the end glad Baltimore won and they were the better team.  I agreed with the announcers that it may have been a slight hold, it should be a no call.  I know SF fans will use this to say they should of won, but it really was not that blatant IMO.

  • Nationaly Fixed Leaue

The worst Superbowl I have ever seen , Even the commercials sucked this year. Guess helmet to helmet only gets called if you don’t play for the ravens .I am not a 49er fan at all. but this was the worst called game . In a long time.Turn out the lights the parties over. NFL – Ninety Faulty Light-Bulbs.

  • Theodore

Solid game i thought. Crabtree did get held though, stuff happens but its not cool when it happens in such a huge spot

  • Sicko

I agree it was holding, but they are not going to make that call unless the guy was tackled. The way Baltimore’s luck was running even if they had gotten the call Colin Kaepernick probably would have fumbled it right back to Ray Lewis.

  • Ty

All the complaining about that non-holding call is pointless, Kaepernick threw that ball out of bounds on an angle that would have made a catch inbounds virtually impossible.  Flacco got hit out of bounds earlier in the game when the Ravens were driving and no call was made there either, so it goes both ways.  In the end, the Ravens got everything going for them at the right time–offensive line play, the health of their defense, and the play calling on offense.  They deserve it, folks.  For all those trolls out there too who were mocking the AFC the entire year, calling the conference a joke–who’s the joke now?  It doesn’t matter how good the NFC is, all that matter is which conference has the best team, and now that this game is over, it’s finally official which team that is.

Things the Pats can take away from this game? Get healthy at the right time, be aggressive on defense, and get a wide receiver who can just flat out make a play for you like Boldin did on multiple occasions in this game.  Flacco had a tremendous showing this postseason, but the Ravens probably don’t get where they did without Boldin making some incredible catches.

  • ScoopBurton

congratulations to the peoples champion….Mr. Ray Lewis…Praise Jesus!

  • Sicko

100% correct on just about every point.

  • realist

bill b doesn’t do a press conference after a loss and he gets ripped a new one.  Harbaugh does it after the super bowl loss and no one says a thing.  There’s something wrong with this picture

  • Free Ray Lewis!

Congrats to the Ravens. They proved yet again the best team always wins the Super Bowl! No Weapon!!!!!

  • HotMess

Douch e movie clicking “Like” on your own post.

  • Titletown1

It was incredibly frustrating watching this game just wondering how much better (if that’s even possible) the Pats’ offense could have been with a wide out with three quarters the talent that Boldin possesses.

And yes, it was pass interference in the end zone. And yes, it was a horrible throw by Kaepernick anyway. Not sure Crabtree would have been able to make the catch and stay in bounds….

  • Fab4ever

The guys on the NFL Network were all over that call…which is interesting because they get paid by the NFL…nobody was kind explaining how bad a job that was…but in the end, the Niners didn’t do themselves any favors…and there’s Randy Moss, giving up on the ball, just watches it go over his head…bad pass, yes…indifference by Moss? Absolutely…we saw that often in new England…..at least the game took on some drama…I’m sure a whole lotta TV sets across the world were tuning out when it was 28-3…not good for those guys who paid 4 million for a commercial…

  • Fab4ever

He was pure money…hats off to Joe…good for him….

  • Fab4ever

Points well taken…however, some are saying that had Crabtree NOT gotten held, maybe Kapernick doesn’t throw the ball out-of-bounds…but you’re right. The Niners dug a hole by playing like crap…period. I still can’t get over Moss giving up on that ball…hey, if you can’t catch it, at least sacrifice your body and prevent the other team fro picking it off…

  • Sicko

Flacco was immense. Hopefully this is just a one year wonder as his numbers in the past couple of regular seasons have not been great. Pulled an Eli Manning in the big games though.

  • Free Ray Lewis!

Here you go the fake “HotMess” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcSBw76_tpk

  • HotMess

Are you that needy that you have to like your own posts?!? Man, you really are a douch e.  BTW I took your ID just to reiterate what a douch e you are…..

  • HotMess
  • Sicko

Lol, nice. We have a lot of them around these boards that’s for sure.

  • Free Ray Lewis!

Only thing I need is to point out what a fraud you are. Do you have a sports opinion to share? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr4dhFqxbJk

  • Amoses74

How does Joe Flacco win the MVP award.  MVP of that game was Jacoby Jones (since the refs didnt wanna call the obvious hold in the end zone)  He catches a long TD where he gets up and makes a great move to run past 2 guys then runs a 108 yrd kickoff for another TD.  Jones….MVP!

  • Keebs

That’s because Flacco was still in the air when the first contact was made. That’s why there was no foul call.

  • Keebs

I give props to the Ravens for winning, even though i think crappy play calling at the end cost the 49er’s the game.

It still amazes me that all Flacco has to do is not suck. All he does is heave balls up all over the place. Can we get some receivers like that, PLEASE!!!!

  • Gray

Most of those who watched are still waiting for the flag to be thrown on the 2nd and 4th down pass attempts especially that 7 yard hold on 4th down – im not saying the 49ers win either way but.. if you arent going to call the penalties than why all about protecting wide outs.  The Ravens got a PI in their favor for loss earlier to sustain a drive. another bad ref job (Think they need to get rid of  these all star crews have thought so for awhile)

  • Gray

I actually agree I figured if the Ravens won it would be Jones or Boldin as the MVP they both made amazing catches and Jones with that Run back that really did prove the difference in the end. (Reminds me of the back breaking return against the Pats back against the packers in 96)

And I had Crabtree – Gore – or maybe Davis for the niners I thought those players all out playered their respective QB’s another unearned MVP ~

  • Gray

I think Dwayne Bowe might be able to do something like that .. hes not going to rip the top off defenses like the the 2007 version of moss did .. But he will go up use his Body fight for the ball and usually pull it in tough over the middle and outside WR – there are others but thats one ‘big name’ that comes to mind

  • ravensarecheaters*

Anyone who didn’t know the NFL would give Ray Lewis a SB on his way out is blind….when Ray announced he was retiring my gut keeled over and said “Watch him get a SB win”  and boy was I right…look at all the help they got from the Refs..in every game since he’s come back.

  • ravenscheat*

    Or just drink Antler Juice

  • Yankee27/GMEN baby!

Waaaaaaaa Waaaaaaaa typical Boston baby… Congrats ray Lewis nice way to go out

  • Anonymous

Best day for a murderer since OJ was acquitted….

  • Keebs

I’ve heard Dwayne Bowe’s name dropped around but I also heard he drops a lot of balls, too. He had 800 receiving yards this past season & I can only see that going up with Brady, but Brady needs to start trusting more guys. I also heard that the Raven’s plan on releasing Boldin to clear up some cap space. It’ll be an interesting off season. All I know is that they need to get Brady a top notch receiver before it’s too late.

  • Sicko

     Drop dead douch e.

  • Gray

he can drop some balls sure thing – but then again look at whos been passing to him C- grade Quarterbacks on a good week. the back ups back up on another. so 800ish yards is impressive in and off itself , and its not like some patriots havent caught a cause of butter fingers when the clutch is needed.. (hell I mean welker dropped a pass that can not be any more perfect .. the one in the superbowl not perfect the AFCC? Perfect pass. I could list the others but we all know them anyway)

I fully agree with you Brady both needs to trust his receivers more (I think he seems to be doing so [whatever one may think of him I think he was a good addition] to Lloyd but it took most of the season to get it.) and equally as important the patriots needs a Bowe or a Boldin or some one who isnt named Gronk to be a red zone threat and a strong powerful WR to give Brady the option to just pull a flacco and just chuck the ball up and let his Wide out make the play (which doesnt happen on this current team and hasnt in a very long time and only for 1 season)

  • Truth

kevin winters let D&C talk uninterupted for 3 mintues..a new personal best!

  • Billy OBrien

At least now Ray Lewis can become a minister and Praise Jesus.

  • Dalee96

Bizarre game, for sure. But if any team earned this, it’s definitely gotta be the Ravens, no question about that. Andrew Luck and the Chuckstrong Colts, two Hall-of-Famers in Brady and Manning, and the read-option offense of the 49ers- no one gave the Ravens a shot, but , hey, they proved EVERYONE wrong. Ray Lewis definitely was the catalyst, whether we like it or not, behind this run, but that’s what great leaders do. And Joe Flacco, man, what an incredible postseason he had. He proved to everyone that he’s an elite QB. We may not like it, Pats Nation, but the Ravens deserved it.

  • FireGuyFrank

The NFL is as fixed as the NBA. As soon as Ray Lewis announced his retirement, Roger Goodell knew which team needed to win the Suspect Bowl.  It was perfect.  One brother taking one for another.  Sure, they made it look good.  The NFL was tired of romps that had folks going to bed after half time.  The fact remains, someone at the Super Dome decided to make a statement — present a major clue — when they threw the power switch.  The winning team’s score was 34 points.  The “black out” at a completely refurbished, post-Katrina facility was 34 minutes.

  • FireGuyFrank

    The fix WAS in, Bruinman86.

  • FireGuyFrank

Had the BEST team in the NFL won a legitimate play-off, then we would be marking the championship of the Seahawks, Falcons or Patriots.  All three of those teams are superior.  The fix was in when Ray Lewis said that this was it.

  • FireGuyFrank

As I recall, the Pats tried to get Boldin, but he chose the City of Pigeons.

  • t sizzle

hey foxboro hows my a– taste ?

  • Fab4ever

Waaaaaaaa Waaaaaaa …typical Yankee27 dumb rant….Eli had a good playoff run didn’t he? No picks thrown….hey, just a few days untilt the Yanks can begin the countdown to banner #28 with a corpse for a 3rd baseman, a near corpse for a 1st baseman (I’m on the downside of my career-yeah and the Yanks own that stiff until 2016 and at 22.5 million per)..The Youk might be the Yanks best infielder…Bwaahahaaaaaaaa

  • Bruinman86

With all the money involved in the largest game in the US, you do have to question this stuff.

  • Bruinman86

Call the games the same way in the playoffs as you do the regular season. It should always be that way.

  • Patsfan41968

For a team that averaged 8 penalties a game for 16 regular season games and 3 playoff games to only get called for 2 last night, while still playing aggressively is suspicious at best…the Ravens won the Super Bowl on 1/2/13!
