Heath Evans on M&M: ‘Terrell Suggs, shut your mouth and speak the truth’ 02.28.13 at 1:21 pm ET

Heath Evans

NFL Network analyst Heath Evans joined Mut & Merloni on Thursday to defend Tom Brady against critics of the quarterback’s new contract and call out Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs for being “an absolute fool” in his latest attack on the Patriots.

Brady generally has received high praise for his restructured contract, although there is a faction that is critical of him for setting the contractual bar lower. Some Boston media members sounded off on Brady on a local TV show Wednesday.

Said Evans: “There’s two parts of the media I never want to be equated with. One, I don’t know what I’m talking about, which those people don’t know what they’re talking about. I don’t know who they are, but you can tell them they can call me and apologize any time they want for not knowing what they’re talking about.

“And then two, the idea that they actually think this is going to affect other people’s contracts. Here’s the thought: In 2015 our cap changes. The cap is going to increase $20 million a year. So if Tom is still playing lights-out football like I expect he will be, he’s going to go right back to the table and get a whole bunch more guaranteed money. He’s not affecting his overall purse very much as long as he’s still playing well, which — we’re betting on Tom Brady, he’s going to be here.

“They make news out of nothing. This isn’t news. This is one of probably the greatest quarterbacks of all-time saying, ‘Hey, I want to put myself in a position in my twilight years to win another ring or two, or at least get back to the big dance and have a chance.’ That’s exactly what he did. We should applaud Brady for what he’s doing.”

Added Evans: “It’s stupid media, and I don’t ever want to be a part of that.”

Suggs, the Ravens veteran who blasted the Patriots after the AFC championship game, joined The Big Show on Wednesday and insisted “the other 31 teams hate the New England Patriots” due to their arrogance. Evans, who played fullback for the Patriots from 2005 until 2008, dismissed Suggs’ comments.

“He’s an absolute fool. He is,” Evans said. “Maybe he’s one of the best pass-rushers that we’ve seen in a long time, but he’s a fool if doesn’t believe that [teams respect the Patriots]. For me, I say things that I believe in. … I just speak the truth. And the truth is, people are scared to death when they step on the field to face Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Wes Welker, a healthy [Rob] Gronkowski, a healthy Aaron Hernandez, defensively Jerod Mayo is one of the best middle linebackers in this game, Vince Wilfork, there is no match for him.

“Terrell Suggs, shut your mouth and speak the truth. Are you a heck of a player? Absolutely, an amazing player. But give me a break. I watch this film, I watch how people move and react according to what the Patriots do. I watch this whole league sit back and try to copy them. Heck, [Ravens tight ends] Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta is a formula of what New England is trying to do.

“So, give me a break. Don’t just get on airways and speak nonsense. Watch game tape, know this game inside and out, and then speak your opinion based on facts that are truly evident to everyone across this business, that knows this business inside and out. When people come out speaking that nonsense, it screams of insecurity. It screams of the fact that, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe we actually beat them again, somehow we got lucky and actually did it, and whoo-hoo, and now we’ve got a Super Bowl ring.’ That’s what it says to me.”

    Great comments spoken with confidence.

  • Good response

Once a Pat always a Pat. Not afraid to speak up against a real jerk hwo cannot manage his
    own life.

  • Jimrma

Great Response Heath and hope that Suggs sees it, he is absolute JERK.

  • jimromeisasass

this whole dialogue is beyond stupid.

  • Srogan12

Highly unusual… an intelligent, knowledgeable, unbiased media member

  • Anonymous

I mean did anyone expect not to hear from Suggs about the Patriots after the Ravens beat NE and then won the Superbowl. Predictable and stupid comments by this guy shouldn’t ruffle anyone’s feathers.

  • Fab4ever

Patriot or not…it’s the truth….period. Every era needs a villain and tag. Patriot Nation is it.

  • Fab4ever

It’s stupid because Suggs initiated it….don’t blame anyone for wanting to ste the record straight….it’s like idiot Sox fans when they chant “Yankees Suck”….they don’t suck…they set the bar…just like the Pats do in the NFL.

  • Anonymous

Wouldn’t have it any other way

  • Anonymous

Suggs talking smack about tom Brady??  You aint won enough or done enough in your career Suggs.  Besides, maybe the Pats dont like any of those other 31 teams!! But everyone of their qb’s has been the beneficiary of the “tuck rule”.  Be happy you won Suggs.  Enjoy the moment, because it doesnt last forever!!  Those 31 other temas are going to be gunning for you, and all the other Ravens.  Matter of fact, call around Suggs, I guarantee they all hate you at this moment!!

  • Qtrback

The man is an idiot and he proved it during the interview……..KEEP YOUR BIG MOUTH SHUT….how did he even get into college?  Oh yea, football scholarship…….didn’t major in English that’s for sure!

Way to go Evans! I’m glad someone put Suggs in his place…the guy is a complete idiot.

  • Vslayer

No one does respect the Pats outside of the NE area.  What players or fans would respect cheaters?

  • williiehank

Real problem was WEEI giving that fool air time, shame on you Holley!

  • Rundmc56

I had spies at one of my practices, so I got them and took them on the practice field and explained my defense in detail to them.  We got all the way through it.  Then when I told them how to readjust the players on their team to play us, they got embarassed and left.  We whipped them 28-0 that weekend.  Quit whining.

  • Ty

Time to set the record straight on behalf of Heath Evans one more time.

First, so many people are ignorant as to what Spygate actually entails that the word “cheating” is thrown around like a football (yes, pun intended).  The Patriots were filming the opponent’s sidelines from an area they weren’t supposed to be filming from.  Is filming the opposing sidelines against the rules? No, it is not.  Every single team in the league has done it from up in the booth for decades now.  Why do you think teams still change their signals from week to week and play calls?  To think that the cameras actually gave them some added advantage is just simply incorrect.  What the Patriots did that got them punished was film from their own sideline instead of up in the booth where it’s legal to do so.  A memo had been sent to every team in the NFL before the 2007 season began, so needless to say, Gooddell wasn’t happy and at the time, handed down the Patriots the harshest discipline that had ever been handed out in the history of the NFL.  Don’t be so naiive as to think what the Patriots were doing was not something else any other team was doing either.

And here’s where the thinking behind this whole thing supposedly helping the Patriots out for years absolutely falls apart: they missed the playoffs entirely in 2002 after having won their first franchise SB.  They lost in the playoffs in both 2005 and 2006.  What, did they randomly not use cameras then?  They’ve been the winningest franchise since Spygate happened, and that includes an 18-0 run immediately afterwards.  Sorry, but Spygate is juts an excuse people use to dish out hate towards the Pats when the real truth behind the matter is that people were envious and sick of the Patriots after they won their 3rd SB in 4 years and established a dynasty.

Someone once said that parents with IQ’s of 50 do not produce offspring with IQ’s greater than 50. Suggs is living proof.

  • Chuckchamp

Terrell Suggs is a loser thug who is a talented pass rusher and an amazingly quick healer though he seams to have grown antlers!!! As for his comments about Brady they qualify as absolutely unfounded remarks and are just his opinions. Every fan of this game appreciate the talents of TB and very few recognize Sugg’s contribution to the game and his statements reek of jealousy!!!!!

  • Jasond0879

You sound like a complete idiot? Cheat how? Placement of a camera so many other teams did it. I sense your jealousy of our franchise and its OK. The Patriots are a top 3 franchise in the NFL

  • H Bouley

YAWN!! Hey troll, How about some new schtik. The NFL never accused the Pats of cheating. All that was stated was they secured film of other teams(info which other teams also undoubtedly had) by means not allowed by NFL rules. The Pats actually have a better won/lost record under Belicek after spygate than before which proves you are clueless.

  • Coolmt02

Heath Evans opinion is no more important than Terrell Suggs .. Both men have opinions; they’re both entitled to them. Nothing more to see here.

  • Fab4ever

    You betcha…

  • Fab4ever

Ty said it better than I could ever hope to….read it, learn it, know it. You hate them because you’re a fan of some other market…we get it…you should learn to respect them because they will always come to your town and walk out with a win most of the time….

  • Fab4ever

Opinion is one thing…stupidity is another….Suggs is challenged upstairs…

  • Boston_Sports

SUGGS, what goes around comes around. The Patriots will see you again this season.

  • Greg

Your an idiot, do you actually know anything about the media created spy gate? Let me explain in simple words for you. NOTHING !,,,,, they did nothing every other team wasn’t doing.

  • ChrisinDanvers

It is always fun to see players explain things the way they think they need to. For whatever reason, Suggs decided he needed to make his comments – which were all part of his advertising fodder when he appeared on The Big Show (although I am not sure he really got the audience he was talking to 100 percent if he was trying to sell his movie).

But, what is even better is the way that former players respond to it. It is great that Heath Evans didn’t mince words, got straight to the point, and noted that, while Suggs is a great player, is opinions are useless, tired, and based on bad information. That’s the best way to come back from ridiculous comments like Suggs’.

  • SickofSuggs

Good intent, but he told him to shut his mouth and speak the truth.  That’s like saying die and have a nice life.

  • nhfisherman

Terrell Suggs is nothing more than a loud-mouthed pantload. If he spent as much time working on his girth as he does running his mouth about the Patriots, he might become an even better player. Unbelievable how this guy will say anything to stir the pot and get a little attention. Dude, you need to get over the past and move on.

  • http://www.facebook.com/richard.frye.52 Richard Frye

WELL SAID…    every bit of it the truth…

  • Alexdholder

If thugs wasn’t scared of the Patriots he wouldn’t have opened his stupid fat mouth in the first place!!

  • Djdonn

I saw Evans in an interview on the NFL Network with Sharper. Sharper was saying the Patriots are now irrelevant. What a fool. It was starting to get heated. Evans was clearly pissed.
The Patriots have lost 2 Super Bowls in the last minutes, the second one without our best weapon, Gronkowsky and the fool calls them irrelevant.

  • Anonymous

A super star athlete restructures his contract to win and you have Fred Toucher ripping him. What an idiot! I don’t even consider him a sports reporter. He reminds me of the rock station bcn when they played Mishagots. What a morron! He’s a Touch-Hole! And who actually listens to Suggs any way? I can’t believe he even wears a helmet during practice. Look if the Pats free up money so Tommy boy can win it only stands to reason that someone else is going to get paid. An athlete who is not all about the money. What a breath of freash air.
And as far as Borges and Shaughnseey, they’re just angry old men that nobody listens to anymore.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NM46GKNZIKFDM3OY7EIMXR26AI Bob-Omb

Suggs is just mad that nobody cares about the Ravens winning the Super Bowl, so he figured he’d come on the radio to “promote his movie” and just talk a bunch of junk to people will think about him. Holley was about to make him look like a fool in that interview and he knew it and bailed:
“I always tell it like it is”
“Is Brady better than your guy?”
“I don’t know.  I’m out of time.  Gotta go. Bye.”

  • Marlenereid

suggs just mad that brady wont let him suck his dick. Rejection rage, that’s all it is. lol

  • H Bouley

Do you actually eat with that mouth?

  • H Bouley

I wonder if Sharper thinks the Brocos, 49ers and Packers are irrelevant also since none have won a super bowl this century LOL Actually my feeling is Sharper was give the role of a Suggs supporter in a debate, was not prepared to argue and came out looking like a fool.

  • Geminayedream

QRTBACK are you talking about college, serious half graduated on cow tippin. have you listened to MICHEL VICK talk.

  • CAPATSFAN

That as an excellent explanation of what really happened.  It’s too bad that you aren’t the one writing these articles.  Very well said.  The fact is that regardless of what was filmed and subsequently planned you still have to execute.  The Patriots have been the best at executing game plans and winning. And whther or not the other teams “HATE” the Patriots, players everywhere wish they could belong to such a class organization.  And those players who come to the Patriots from other teams tell everyone how happy they were to be selected as a Patriot.  And I would be remiss if I didn’t end this note by stating that Robert Kraft is the classiest of all of the owners.

  • J Wilson

F*** Heath Evans. He sucks and never had an impact on the game like Suggs

  • Shaggyo3

hate to day it pats fans, but what suggs said is true.  i work at a bar in a tourist area of florida, and talk to people from all over the country about football all the time.  Your beloved pats are absolutley hated outside of new england, thats just a fact.

  • FailTrollsFail

Clearly a bunch of drunks are reliable :P

  • Skish59

This comment is so maddening!  Who ratted out Belicheck?  His former asst. coach the little guy who lasted how long as a head coach?!  If you don’t think every team was doing the same thing at the same time you’re nuts!  Does that mean we condone it?!  Hell no!  But, get over it already!  They paid their penalty and took the blame.  Shame on people who use this lame argument to slam a great franchise and the great players on the field.  Oddly enough, no one seems to rag on the Ravens for having a felon on their team?!
