Report: Wes Welker will test free agent waters 03.06.13 at 9:03 am ET
By

Wide receiver Wes Welker has no plans to re-sign with the Patriots before testing the free agent market next week, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Welker, who has spent the last six seasons in New England, played the last year under the franchise tag, but the veteran was not tagged this month. The 31-year-old Welker is coming off a stretch of at least 100 catches in five of his last six seasons.

    sore loser

  • Wine Traveler

Smart for him to test the waters.  The Pats should have tied him up last year.  They may regret that decision.  I hope Welker is back with the Pats.  I think Tom will be more than a little upset if they don’t bring back Wes.  They need to do whatever it takes to keep him.

  • Jwing3399

Sore loser? Thinking that it’s pretty “American” to want to know what your open market value is …. particularly if your team hasn’t shown a willingness to pay you what other top receivers have been making.

  • Snaggletooths

Let him go….  get a Big bruising back like Dillon and Smith beack in the Championship days.  Welker can be replaced.  Pay the money on a top CB and Safety.  Get a pass rusher and for the love of God Kraft, get a big hard nosed RB.

  • Guest711

Ungrateful. Lets move on. Amendola for the replace.

  • Grygor_c

Direct conflict with what I heard on the Felger /Mazz show, “both party’s are understanding that it is better to be together then apart”. Blah, Blah, Blah. Now this. I will not read into this again. When they sign him, they sign him.

  • Jimmy Freeze

    …Well done Pats…!!!

No wide receivers, and no cornerbacks

another 10-6 season and divisional round loss…

The equivalent of a baseball team thinking they can win with 5  #5 starters, and a crappy shortstop and catcher…(oops, did I say that?)

Well at least they are “winning” the salary cap war.   This sounds like Duquette and his “more days in 1st place” approach.

…good thing they will have a great salary cap position, and establish who’s boss in the locker room…won’t win in the playoffs against an elite team…but they’ll be “sticking with their plan”…

  • randy moss

It appears Brady may have restuctured not to resign Welker but to replace him, they are great friends and Wes prabably gave him a heads up he was leaving. Big mistake a 36 yr old QB with no security blanket starting over….

  • CAPatsFan

A little bit of posturing by WW (and his agent). Makes sense to see what’s out there ($). If for no other reason that to gauge WW’s “true” worth. Would be great to keep him but I’m not going to lose any sleep over him leaving (yes, it would be a loss but not a big one). Edelman has close to similar skillsets and is cheaper.

  • Fab4ever

Jimmy…take a pill, relax…you’ll feel a whole lot better. It’s the first week of March, the free agency period has yet to start, we’re months away from training camp…and you’re getting your panties all in a bunch now??? Talk about a Chicken Little mentality…guys like you bring me much amusement…and folks wonder why Boston, NYC, Philly etc are tough towns to play in…the media loves guys like you…

  • Fab4ever

A total conflict with what was being reported yesterday and last night…are these guys taking meteorolgy classes? “Forecast is for sun…wait, there’s a storm but it’ll pass to the south…new models indicate snow might clip the Cape…hold on, looks like we could get some plowable snow in Boston….OMIGOD, it’s a full blown blizzard and we have to name it”….

  • Chairman1

another 10-6 season? when was the last one?  you are an idiot, you realize most cities would kill to have a fraction of the success of the Pats.  Not paying him? 9 million seems like good pay to me.  It would be foolish to give him a 3 year deal.  You all forget that Julian can slide into the role with a super jumbo package with Hernandez in the slot and Gronk and Ballard at TE. Oh yeah you forgot the Pats claimed him while he was hurt didn’t you?  Wes Welker dropped the pass in the Superbowl that cost the team the game and he dropped the pass in the Ravens game that totally switched momentum.  He just is getting older, 118 catches great but how many were dumps and how many were screens?  What % were pattern runs that his skill and not the offense as a whole mattered? 10% if that?  Wes Welker is a great piece but he is just a piece Gronk is the guy that makes the difference and we have seen that the last 2 years.  Welker will be back because every other team knows this too but maybe a Dallas or Denver will overpay him. But ask David Givens, Deion Branch, David Graham, Ben Watson, and others what happened when they left #12.

  • Rilawman

The Pats could sign Amendola for half the money Welker will be making.
    A few points:
Can anyone name one receiver who has left the Pats during the Brady era to sign big contracts and has even come close to the production they had while in NE (Givens, Branch, Moss (traded), anyone…
Welker is a great slot receiver, not a game changer.  This team is predicated around spreading the ball around and don’t forget with Ballard on the team next year they could always more Hernandez to the slot.
Put the extra money towards the defense.  CB’s on this team not named Talib are horrible.  They have no strong safety, they could use and OLB/DE who can get to the passer and they could use another d-linemen so Wilfork doesn’t get triple teamed on every play.
The question would not be would you take Welker over Amendola, it would be would you take Welker over Amendola and Freeney or Welker over Amendola and Talib.  Even better could you settle with Hernandez and Edelman in the slot along with Wallace at WR.
If Welker goes it’s not the end of the world because the Pats will spend to the cap this year and hopfully invest in a defense that has been the biggest problem over the last 7 years.

  • Jramsey470

A prudent move.  Would be nice to have him back but Pats need to focus on Defense if they ever hope to win another Bowl.

  • Dave

really don’t care!  What has this bunch of guys won since 2004! I want guys like Bruschi and Vrabel back!  guys who want to win and not whine!

  • RDee

He’s just posturing……………He will get no better offer than what the Pats can give him. This system was made for him and he knows it.

  • It Is What It Is

This is what happens when lawyers get involved and obstruct the Free Agency process. A “mutual understanding” on a 3 year deal between Wes Welker and Robert Kraft gets blown apart over trivial technicalities between legal teams arguing over pennies on the dollar and OBSTRUCTING a deal getting done.

The end result? Wes Welker likely signs for slightly more money and more “guaranteed years” in a completely different system not well suited for his skills and his lawyers make off like bandits. However, much like when Tim Tebow was traded to the Jets last offseason, this new team has no idea how to effectively use Wes Welker, and he ends up becoming a complete bust. Then Welker gets cut next offseason when the new team wants to “cut its losses” and “restructure his contract”.

Meanwhile, the Patriots try to replace Welker with a lot of low cost high reward “value signings”. Or they sign another Chad Ochocinco or Joey Galloway who ends up being such a complete bust that the Pats cut him by midseason. With a receiving corp full of Reche Caldwells, Tom Brady struggles more and the Patriots lose a couple games they could have won. They still win a weak AFC East as the #4 Seed, but get bounced from the playoffs right away against a defense that knows they only need to double cover Gronk (if healthy)  and Hernandez (if healthy) to cripple Brady’s effectiveness.

In the end, Welker ends up crawling back to the Patriots in a year or two, ends up signing a league minimum contract with incentives, and provides Brady the depth he needs to go deep in the Playoffs again. He becomes Deion Branch 2010 all over again.

Bottom Line: Wes Welker is better with the Patriots. The Patriots are better with Wes Welker. But the lawyers will do everything possible to obstruct the process squabbling over pennies on the dollar so they can make out like bandits while everyone else gets screwed.

  • Skalex

Bob Kraft is a BIG lier. About one month ago he said Welker  will retire as a Patriot. Now who do you believe???

  • Cfn

Patriots have no intentions of paying him what he wants and they should not.  I was really surprised to hear everyone last week thinking because TB redid his contract that it was a done deal for Welker.  Everyone think TB want Wes back as well.  This is not true.  TB will work with whoever they give him.  Pats one 3 SB on defense and this is what they want to go back to.  The 25 mil left in cap space willl mainly go toward beefing up the defense.  We will still have a dynamic offense with Gronk, Aaron Lyod, and will resign Edleman and woodhead who can catch the ball too.  Ridley and Veereen are to shabby in catching the ball.  We will then draft a deep threat as well as sign a free agent deep threat at medium price.  Forget about Talib, he wants too much.

  • Chairman1

last time I checked Bob Kraft does not control Wes Welker’s choices

  • Wes Welker

“another 10-6 season and divisional round loss”???? You need to do some homework my friend!

  • Habs dive squad

bye bye wes.  zero chance some idtion gm doesnt throw huge money at him and i hope the pats walk away.  actaully, i wish they would just remove him from thier plans altogether if he does decide to go to FA.  they have to find someone that can catch the ball when it matters most anyway.

  • Robert Kraft

Everyone posting on here that thinks the Pats’ are to blame here ar a bunch of idiots………….period.  I mean read the artcile (paragraph).  This is WW wanting to test the market.  He will get offers from other teams and if it’s not a crazy offer the Pats’ will match it!

  • YayYo

pay for an outside threat – we have enough middle of the field receivers with the TEs

  • Robert Kraft

    Skalex.  Don’t embarrass
yourself with that statement.  If WW
leaves it will be because some team WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY overpaid for
him.  He will get offered something like
a three year deal with the Pats’ at 11million per with 20 million signing bonus
/ guarantee or some other nonsence.  It’s
not going to be Bob Kraft’s fault if WW leaves!

  • Kenkarken

When was the last time this team was 10-6? Wake up and take a chill pill, you sound like a total moron that expects a Championship every year. The Patriots are consistently in the top of the league every year and continue to advance in the playoffs, 3 Super Bowls aren’t enough?

  • jimmy freeze is clueless

they could go 10-6 without brady….. how clueless are you?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/MDUXWHRN4LPJMJHISYMIUAX3JQ BELLVUE

Let him go. Team is not made from him anyway. Pats need to get bigger and better with the deep er passes . He can get more money but will not be half as good anywhere else. Good Luck to him !

  • http://www.facebook.com/dmspier David Spier

It is a good move for all to test the market.  I strongly suspect that Wes is worth less to most teams, those with offenses that place more value on tall receivers and less value on timing routes.  Wes is a great player who shines in the Patriots system but would be less successful in certain offenses (e.g. Dallas, San Francisco).  Once he sees other offers, and observes which are from teams unlikely to win, he and the Patriots will be in a better position to agree on the right salary number.  Everyone wins.

  • Jwing3399

Of course …. based on the “what do Pats receivers do when they leave the Pats” argument, you’re implying that any WR would thrive in the pats system. Ask Brandon Lloyd how that played out. Point being … it’s not about how someone may do somewhere else, it’s about knowing what Welker is most likely to do if he stays a Pat. Look, certain players thrive in certain systems …. Welker thrives with the Pats…. so, why not pay him? Kind of reminds me of when Papelbon left the Sox …. They felt that it was too much to pay a closer.

  • Bruinman86

Let the cards fall where they may.

  • GodzillaKills

Let him go.  I appreciate Welker as much as the next guy, but there’s a difference between what he’s worth to the patriots team and what he deserves as a player/person.  The Patriots can go out there and sign a Danny Amendola for half maybe less of a cap hit than what Welker is going to cost.   The Patriots are loaded with players that can make an impact from inside 10-15 yards.  The Patriots would be smart to focus on expanding this bubble as well as strengthening their defense.  Welker is great and for Danny Amendola money I hope the Pats sign him in a heart beat.   The Patriots can find better value for his role and add another component that they are sorely missing.  Thanks Wes, I hope you get your money, just not here.

  • Donalmcl27

He won’t know unless he tests the water, but NE is the best for him. He will not be as successful
without the supporting cast he has now, might turn into just another small receiver in a different setting.

  • philg

simple … how many super bowl crowns has welker given you? 100 + catches a year…. but always the big drops when it counts

  • http://www.facebook.com/dmspier David Spier

It would not surprise me at all if the Patriots and Welker have agreed together to gain market intelligence by Welker testing the market with the express intention of signing with the Patriots.  That may well get both sides to the same price.  The Coach has done it before with other players.

  • BB busy time

Wallace should be a target to stretch field. Woodhead great hands and runds great routes and gets
yards after catch. Vereen also an option and sign a big back.

Need to fix secondary and pass rusher. Ballard and Gronk tough coverage and herandez can also do slot work and is working with Brady on the west coast.

  • Gazzzmann

the guys one of the walking wounded

  • Salspal

Can we stop with the we’ll just replace him with Amendola please. When is the last time Amendola played a full season. He is soft. Welker is a tough tough SOB who never misses games. Gronk, Edelman, Hernandez are all locks to miss some games next season. Pats have plenty of money to sign Welker and get some very good DB’s/pass rushers this year for short money.

  • HUH???

Foolish to sign a guy with 118 catches? Yeah those 2 drops cost us the game.. Really??  Julian in super jumbo package.. easy coach? BTW julian is a free agent, Oh you forgot that. And your comparing Welker to Watson, Graham and Givens hilarious. How many catches did he have playing with Cassel… look it up. He will excel in any system.

  • WhaleBelly

Beginning of Phase II of the Demolition of the Golden Years of the Pats. Age & retirement of the defensive stars did it in Phase I ; Light’s retirement and Welker leaving all leads us to Brady’s eventual decline. Time marches on. Saw it with the Browns of the ’50s, the Packers of the 60s, Steelers of the 70s, etc. Time and age have no friends and Welker’s time is probably up in NE.

  • Ty

These days, 10-6 can easily turn into 13-6 or 14-6 and a championship.  Exhibit A: the 2012-2013 Baltimore Ravens.  Just because Welker’s going to test the free agent market doesn’t mean that the Patriots won’t sign him.. and even if Welker’s gone, that doesn’t mean that next season is thrown away just like that.  There are plenty of other ways the Patriots can go, and if there’s anything I’ve learned about Tom Brady and this offense, it’s that it is extremely consistent year in and year out, no matter what the scheme is, no matter who you put around #12, and no matter who the OC or QB coach is.

I’d like them to resign Welker, but that’s because we’ve all seen those two be successful together and it’s familiar.  Change isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, and if some team out there wants to overpay the guy, so be it.  The Pats have shown the ability to adapt, whether it be different personnel, different rules, or different schemes.  Welker wants to see what he’ll be offered and is doing what he should be as a free agent, but it’s not like he’s not going to pay attention to what the Patriots have to offer him either.

  • Anonymous

Last time I checked, the Pats had the most wins and the most Supebowl titles of any team in the least 12 years…Seems to be working out pretty well for them.  Sorry the facts go completely against your agenda…

  • Anonymous

…and Amendola would be on the field half the time Welker is.

  • Anonymous

Ugh…people like you just make my brain hurt.

  • Anonymous

Until last year, he was grossly underpaid. Time for him to grab the money and run. He owes the Pats nothing.

  • Anonymous

Apparently not enough some people.  The phrase I hear that makes me want to rip my brain out is “They haven’t won anything since 2004″.  Yeah, them and 26 other teams.

  • Anonymous

What another moronic statement.  How many Super Bowls has a single WR given any team?  Do you think even 1 single person with a shred of football knowledge judges player talent that way?  Woodworks…

  • Anonymous

God! Only 2 Super Bowl appearances in 5 years, 5 in 10 years…things are really looking bleak for the organization!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…HAHAHA…haha…hah

  • Mistertttt35

So Wes Welker tells Jason Cole and Yahoo Sports he has some disdain for the Patriots which is so weird because I have disdain for WR’s who want to get paid like a number one WR, yet drops catchable balls in the Super Bowl (sorry Wes  fans but #1 WR’s make tough catches when the Super Bowl are in grasp) and drops balls that hit him in between the 8 and 3 in AFC Championship games that lead to numerous, deflating ends, of possible scoring drives. So now Wes is telling anyone and everyone who will listen that he’s going to test the market and not sign before free agency begins.  Don’t test the market, leave and don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.  If you don’t like the money the Patriots are offering you I suggest you pack your bags, take the most money offered to you and let me know how the season goes when you have anyone not named Tom Brady throwing you the ball.  I do appreciate everything you’ve done for the Patriots, you’ve been one of their best receivers ever, but I do not and will not ever trust you when we are in the big games.  You want top dollar, yet you drop a ball in the opening drive against the Raven that could have lead to the Patriots going up 2 TD’s.  In our last Super Bowl, I’m tired of hearing that the ball he dropped was a difficult catch, #1 WR’s make that catch. I really want to trust you again but I can’t.  Pats should withdraw their offer, and sign Danny Amendola, Anquan Bolden, and draft a WR and move on!

  • Greg

I feel sorry for him.. boo hooo babe wife who makes millions and hes rich too.. Brady isnt going anywhere they restructured for a reason.. stay tooned and forget this media hype crap we see here

  • Greg

Theres at least 5 free agents who can do what WES can some even better.. Brady makes WES.. well WES he stunk before hooking up with a great QB

  • eli

wow  –give you credit b-man you are objective–99.9 % of the other pats fans on on this board still think its 2004—wake up #12 will be 36 this august

  • Daysofthenew

he’s gone.  Go get that kid there… the burner from Pittsburgh, Wallce?  Hernandez is your flanker anyway.

  • Daysofthenew

oh come on Kid Jesus… where are your baseball references?  Old Mr. Fenway himself!  Go back to Fenway and sing Sweet Caroline with the rest of the Pink Hats.  STAY OUTTA FOXBORO.

  • Holycross1

Why do we hear from other sport networks that Wes Welker is nearing a multi-year deal with the New England Patriots at this time, but in fact he is going to test the free agent waters. Please get the story straight before reporting information to the public !

  • Bruinman86

Thanks. Here’s the thing. I’m not convinced Keeping the old gang together is what they need to win it all. 0-2 in the SB with Welker so far with key drops. The Offense cannot rely on either TE, so the offense must come elsewhere. No deep threat means they cant stretch the field. So maybe the money would be better spent on another guy who can stretch the field. Seems Lloyd has worn out his welcome and could get cut soon. So there’s money to go around, but can they find a WR who can fit their complicated offensive system. So what does this all mean? I’m gun-shy about dumping more boatloads of money into an already flawed offense when the defense has bigger questions and needs. It was a balanced attack of offense and Defense than won them their SB’s. Time to get back to that. If Welker leaves, then maybe they change the system to something more realistic or use the money and draft picks to build a different system. But the Defense must be fixed first. Sounds like a broken record every year.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NM46GKNZIKFDM3OY7EIMXR26AI Bob-Omb

I just hope they don’t pay him too much (pretty sure they won’t).  Too many other areas we need to spend on.  We need another Rodney Harrison.
And I agree with everyone that says we need a big, bruising RB. I like Ridley, but if that were 2004 Corey Dillon back there, Bernard Pollard would’ve been the one out-cold on the field.

  • Innovator

YOu almost have to ask yourself if a combo of Amendola at 3.5 million/Tavon Austin for 2 mil per and Greg Jennings at 8 mil is better than Welker at 8 and Jennings at 8….Tavon Austin could present a whole new set of Problems for defenses trying to scheme against the Pats…..Austin says he wants to be wes Welker…Then again,I’D Like to be Brad Pitt,,,well with the exception of having 6 kids…

  • hammer

    Go get Greg Jennings

  • Mplfl

Not sure what is best but I think we need to spend money on defense. 1 or 2 Corners and maybe a 3rd down pass rusher. Better not overpay for Welker.

  • Fab4ever

Stunning when read those kind of posts…and folks wonder how the USA became “dumbed down”….people will b it ch just to hear themselves talk…fear and loathing…they wake up in a cold sweat if the sun isn’t out…

  • Fab4ever

” the Defense must be fixed first. Sounds like a broken record every year.”…you have been stealing my thunder my friend…fix the D…the rest will follow…look at the Ravens…look at the 2 Giant rings….the Pats could have easily won those 2 Super Bowls had they been able to stop the Giants late..I believe you and I both said at some point, they need to win games 17-13, 21-17 at some point to move on…sure I’d like to keep WW, but not at the expense of improving the D and/or getting a deep threat…

  • Chuckchamp

So your buddy TB clears the cap space necessary for the team to sign you and you decide to test the market? Good times! I now believe the rumors that Danny Amendola will be the new SWR in New England. Sorry you couldn’t win a Super Bowl trophy with the Patriots and if you leave you better pick a team with a shot at winning it all. Ask Randy what it’s like thinking you are worth more than you really are.

  • W1cgm

Good luck Wes. We’ll miss ya! We’ll get over it!

  • English Teacher

First of all, Skalex you ass-clown, go apply to get your GED and learn how to spell “liar”. Secondly, you’re an idiot. Robert Kraft is the best owner in all of sports. His players love and respect him.

  • Theghostoftito

Morons. Jennings is leaving the Pack because they offered 9/10 million. U think he would come to the Pats for 8? I agree. No receiver not Megatron is worth that.

  • get a real job

Good, boo hoo hoo, another million dollar ballplayer that is not getting his “respect”…
Anyone else is this economy( you know the real world) getting sick and tired of this crap from these guys? They have not won Sh%^T with him, let him walk to a team that will win 6 games,
who out there can afford to go to a pats game anymore?

  • Bruinman86

Agreed. I don’t need the 40-50 point scoring offense. i would rather have the hard nosed defense oriented team that works hard for what they get and can actually stop the other teams final drive! Besides, Welker appears to have lost a step (with regard to speed in the flat) and is already at a height disadvantage. So moving on might not be all that bad if they do something good with the savings from Welker.

  • welkerisapat4life

third story by weei on welker 1st he has disdain for the pats 2 hours after that hes signing with the pats 20 hours later hes testing the free agent market. weei is so pathetic they will write a story with a 5 year old being there source clearly weei has no clue what welker is going to do but all you trolls still listen to there pathetic lies and there untrue sources. funny the media can write whatever they want and you ididots beleive them

  • Fab4ever

The drama will play on and talk radio is lighting up with calls….

  • Bruinman86

As it always does in the North East. NY, Boston and Philly all take their sports seriously.

  • http://profiles.google.com/nikcomp Tony Nicholas

You mean like Peyton Manning had in Denver then.

  • Chickey19

What era are you watching. It’s a passing game.

  • Cousin Joey P.

I like Welker but they got the most out of him. It’s time to move on. I think the Pats “dink and dunk” option has morphed into the only way they move the ball now. It’s served them well, no doubt, but in the playoffs, they get killed by not being able to stretch the field. Edelman can play the slot at a fraction of the cost. Maybe not as well, but if they go out and get a Mike Wallace, can anyone tell me they wouldn’t rather have Edelman and Wallace rather than JUST Welker?

There is more than one way to skin a cat…If Welker goes the offense isn’t going to be suddenly inept. They can use that money to strengthen other areas. The guy is 32 and has taken a million hits. He can’tplay forever, let him get old on someone else’s dime.

  • brandonruns

How many other offensive targets have been as durable as Welker the last two years?  Everyone around him is being knocked out of games and getting injuried… but oh, since he’s “old,” he’s gotta go………… smh………….

  • DAPATS

Not a big game player. Cost the PATS the Super Bowl last year and key drops against the Ravens in playoffs.  Don’t let the door hit you in you hair-plug for men…..you arse. GO PATS!!!!

dummies..he’ll look real good with Peyton when we play them in denver nxt year..
another thiughtless BB general mgr move..

  • brandonruns

It amazes me how you people forget that he was a big reason why the Pats got all the way to the Super Bowl in the first place.  And, rewatch the game, nearly everyone was dropping catchable balls in that Super Bowl.  Not only did he lead the Pats in receiving In this season’s AFC Championship game, he was also top receiver for the regular season (even though he started out on the bench) and in the post season, too.  Why everyone wants to place all of the accountability on just one guy (but no one else) and then try to pretend he’s irrelevant is beyond me.  In spite of the drops, in Brady’s own words, Welker is the best guy on the team.

  • Ed_Warner

See Ya! Now cut Lloyd and sign Mike Wallace, Amendola & Hartline.

  • Pucchi8780

This just in Ryan Mallet and Brandon Lloyd to Arizona for Larry Fitzgerald

Welker is a waste of money no matter who signs him.  People who call him the best receiver in the NFL are nuts.  I could name at least 10 receivers that would be better for this team.

Well if he goes, so much for friendship with Brady and all that BS.  Maybe for some people it’s all about the Benjamins.  With the $$ they make is a couple mil here or there going to make you incrementally happier?  Hey I’m sure this very debateable.  But to me it’s like leaving a job for more $$$ somewhere else.  I did it when I was younger and believe me the devil you know is sometimes better than the one you don’t or let may think of another cliche… the grass isn’t always….you get the point.  I can’t imagine anyone other than Payton Manning and the Broncos that would be able to utilize him at the level 120 catches per year he is at now.

I hope this is just part of the process. But you know somebody will pay him.  and it’s like Rory McIroy in golf….he gets paid and takes and changes equipment …..look at him now.  I play and I BELIEVE that equipment has an impact…look at tiger he’s struggled for years with NIKE stuff…..I digress big time….you get my point.  If Welker is smart and the $$ isn’t all that much different he should stay.  If someone blows him away….so be it.  I’m sure Amendola is on speed dial.

  • Schwank

Forgot one last point.  I know they are too smart for this to happen, as this would only happen to the Red Sox, but if he tests the waters and dawdles about it.  I hope alternative WR’s don’t get gobbled up in the interim.  On the other hand maybe Welker sets the market with all others to follow.  Which brings up another point.  Perhaps his agent or him for that matter feel pressure from the players union to at least explore.  Welker’s always been stubborn so it makes sense.

  • Schwank

That’s an interesting take. it’s very plausible.

  • Schwank

Interesting…Hernandez in the slot.  He would be tougher to cover as he is, or at least appears to be, bigger than Welker (He’s not huge like Gronk).  For what we lose in speed, we may gain in someone more difficult to cover on those patterns.  But I will say this Welker is so quick that he could get open in a phone booth (remember what those were?). So would Hernandez get open running Welker routes?  The other positive is Edelman would provide you with a Welker like clone, as a change of pace id Hernandez is out or in another position.  Then you could potentially use the $$ on a Lloyd replacement.

  • Schwank

Wow you got up on the wrong side of bed.  Your negatives are negative.  I agree with your points on the lawyers and pressure from the NFLPA to test the market.  If he leaves I don’t beleive he would be a bust…some teams woould utilize him better than others, depend on the Coordinator and QB in place.  I just don’t hink he’d be a bust …maybe his catches drop donw some 30% or so to 70-80.

  • Schwank

He’s not a “liar”.  He can’t sign the contract for him.

  • Schwank

Maybe they make a pitch for ….I can’t spell his name Nnamdi A.?

  • Schwank

Did you have that dream last night?  Me too.

  • Schwank

Reply to myself …..ESPN is posting an article today that warns Welker……that  the Pats wait for no one.  So that answers my question…..they won’t be looking around for dance partners once everyone is taken.

I love Welker, Edelman and Woodhead….especially, when they are all healthy. At age 36, it is harder to stay in that peak condition required in the NFL. I think that Wes should be happy catching a few less passes in front of the safeties. Most NFL players would be more than happy to catch 5 balls per game. The recievers and QB work “together” as a team….without Brady, Wes will not get 100 catches per season.
