Report: Patriots offered Wes Welker two-year, $10M deal

According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network (via twitter), “the Patriots’ final and only recent offer was $10M over two years with incentives. Didn’t make a big effort to keep him.” Welker agreed to a two-year deal with the Broncos worth a reported $12 million on Wednesday.

Look. The Pats supposedly offered WW/agent 2/16mil$, last summer. They turned it down. Then they offered 5/10mil$; WW/agent turned it down. WW/agent shopped it around and Denver/Elway made a 2/12mil$ offer. WW/agent went back to BB to give them last offer and BB stayed at their original offer. Not rocket science, BB has bigger fish to fry. Amendola/Edleman??

    • Uncle Buck

You guessed it.  5 years at 31 mil with 10 guaranteed.

    • Vh588083

You seem to have all the facts and figures, how long will you wait, before you bit** before you miss the welker trade???…

  • Crush9299

Total crap… I will follow the pats again when the “genius” Belichick is gone…. Disgraceful to Welker, Brady and the fans

  • DEFENSE

Forget offense need defense thats what made the Pat’s 3 SB winners. Hernandez will be slot and Woodhead and Vereen fast and get YD’s after catch can also fill in as both have good hands.

Need a downfield threat. Then DEFENSE. GET OFF THE FIELD on third down.

    • Typical Boston Fan

Agreed, lets upgrade that defense because Welker cant play corner.

      • DEFENSE

Hernadez is in CA in off season working with Brady to become his outlet and third down guy. We could not stop Ballard down the middle because he is bigger and stronger than gronk. They have a good blocking TE so you have Hernandez Ballard and Gronk on the field at the same time with a blocking TE which will have the defense tough to cover.

Add a deep threat and offense secure.

        Defense wins SB’s

  • sev

they gave a lot of money to the TEs and they couldn’t even give Welker a 2 year deal….i heard for 12 mil…..thats disrespect for a guy that hasn’t really showed any signs of slowing down and he carried the passing game a lot this year.  I can’t believe this is just Kraft not wanting to pay that little amount.  Can’t wait to see who they do find worthy enough to spend money on.  4-5 year deal, i get it, but 2 years….he’ll be practically the same physically at age 32/33(unless injured obviously)

  • Everyone

Little stone hands Wes totally overestimated his value.  What ajoke.  Why not keep doing the franchise?  Why not sign the 8mil/yr offer he had last year?  He saw there is really no market for him, and he blew it.

    • CAPatsFan

Like all of this (except the “stone hands” comment). WW was/is a damn good football player. But you are spot on right, he overvalued his worth ($8mil per to $6mil per). Even at $6mil per now, it looks like the Pats will fill that slo w/multiple players (bang for the buck).

      Spot on!

    • Uncle Buck

If you had to pick a favorite, would it be David Ortiz or Wes Welker?  Just curious.
“Stone hands”. Laughable. Dial in for a clue.

  • Cfn

I am a little tired of all the stories that have been floating out there on Wes Welker.  We have heard 5 year 40 mil, ect; None of them were accurate.  I knew all along that Pats basically do not want him and there are some personal things going on with Wes and Pats organization.  Or it may be possible Wes picked a really bad agent.  Agents are suppose to negotiate.  So what happened when his agent called Pats and said we are about to take DEN 6 mil offer?  I guess Pats said fine.  So are the Pats stupid?  I doubt it?  They probably have some other options.  First you can sign Woodhead, Edleman and Amendola for the money Welker would have expected.  This is the right choice in my opinion. Everyone says we have Veeren to replace woodhead.  Still need a back up if Ridley or Veeren goes down and Woodhead should stay.  We will need Edleman for returns as well.  If there is a deep threat out there to be had then I see Lloyd getting cut.

  • Bostonian in Seattle

I’m sorry but 2/12 vs 2/10 with incentives. Have to believe Welker was never going to resign…

  • Anonymous

Now they’ll pick up Amendola and Edelman for the same 6 mil/year that Wes is getting, they’ll look great for a few weeks, and then join Gronk on the bench for the playoffs.  Great going Bill.

  • Bostonian in Seattle

And I agree with a previous post that Hernandez can be your slot guy… DEFENSE is exactly what we need. Along with Stephen Jackson at running back!

    • Typical Boston Fan

      talking to packers apparently

  • Zach Starzyk

    DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!

  • WHO CARES

ALL THE EXPERTS” TALK SHOWS” WERE TALKING ABOUT WES WILL GET 8-9M A YEAR, WHAT IDIOTS.

  • Cfn

People we are going to have a great offense, even without Welker.  Gronk, Ballard and Aaron first of all, they are all animals.  Veereen and Ridley have proved themselves.  We will resign Edleman (when not hurt) and woodhead who are very consistent and touph. We will sign Amendola to fortify the slot because we will cut Lloyd who is a head case.  Then we will draft or sign a deep threat.

  • Bienvenidos

Pats already knew he wasn’t coming back, and signed Amendola instead.  Looks like they have Welker 2.0 ready to go. Younger, faster, and Cheaper.

  • Spitfire1064

Welker is dropping a lot of passes lately, time to go…….a lot of key ones as well….. S.B!

    • brandonruns

So, if he was injured and not even the games he dropped passes in, he should’ve been kept???

  • Amcoh

OK! They now can use Edelman & Hernandez in the slot, & Gronk & Ballard  at TE’s. Woodhead & Vereen should caught more balls out of the back field, but they still need a downfield receiver!

    • The_Public

Amcoh, wrong!  Amendola will be the slot receiver.  If you just waited 5 more minutes you wouldn’t have looked so wrong.

  • bugsy

    so wait!
    they wouldn’t pay welker 6m a year? 4 2 years?
thats pretty sad! who r u going to have cover him ? the pat’s can’t cover anyone!
the only way the pat’s fix this, is BB better have 2 starting top tier cornerbacks. it really doesn’t matter what they do on offense! they won without wes, they won without moss!  and the only year the receivers really hurt the team was in 2006. the year branch was gone and the pats lost to indy. that was a killer, because ,it didn’t matter who won, the afc was winning the superbowl that year.
manning got an easy superbowl. if the pats can’t play defense, they cannot win. they should bring moss back for 1 yr and very little cash, sign our own free agents, try to kept our tight ends on the field next year and not out due to more injuries?? i think our 2 young TE’s need better off season conditioning!! they r getting well paid. get a good trainer!
i really thought 6 m a yr 4 welker, would have been a no brainer? i would have gaureeted all the money at that price!
2 starting , real nfl cornerbacks r needed!
the money must b going to the defense…..
brady has won with below average receivers most of his career! maybe this is what the pats need! they need brady to find all the open receivers. maybe BB see’s that ? the video game offense doesn’t win rings!
never has in history? if the pats couldn’t win in 2007 to go 19-0, then no team will…. cornerbacks, please for the life of god! get revis? get taliq

Welker did a lot of great things with the Patriots, however here are the facts of “father-time” in the Not-For-Long NFL.

In 2012 there were just 6 WRs with 9 years or greater in the NFL (Welker’s time of service) that had more than 45 catches OR 600 total yards receiving. They were Brandon Lloyd, Anquan Boldin, Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, Larry Fitzgerald and Reggie Wayne. Again a total of 6 WRs, not TEs, but just WRs. On a consistent basis only Fitzgerald and Boldin go over the middle, like Welker. It’s only a matter of father time, not injury (which can happen to anyone), but before production drops. Notice below are ALL WRs with 10 or more seasons in the NFL this year… tell me if you see that have been affiliated with the Patriots over the last 3-4 years:
10th Year – Andre Johnson, Brandon Lloyd, Anquan Boldin, Kevin Walter, Nate Burleson, Donte’ Stallworth
11th Year – Deion Branch, Jabar Gaffney, Plaxico Burress
12th Year – Reggie Wayne, Steve Smith, Santana Moss
13th Year – None14th Year – Randy Moss, Brandon Stokley, Donald Driver

And if you’re curious, this can easily be found on NFL.com, and beyond only Welker and Larry Fitzgerald being worth anything for the 9th year WRs (next best was Michael Jenkins with 40 for 449 yards), in Year 8 there was just Roddy White, Vincent Jackson and Nate Washington).

  • No More

Plain and simple. Kraft and BB suck. Simply disgraceful. 5 million a year. Nice slap in the face. BB you are the biggest tool in all of sports. This will kick this arrogant dick and that slob Kraft right in the face.

  • Kman1020

No way can you compare the toughness of Welker. The guy played his butt off every single play. Amendola is a big question mark. It remains to be seen just how tough he can be when he has not been able to play a lot. Think this decision got a little too personal on both sides. Just a clear example of why the coach should not be the GM as well.

  • Jgfal

whatever, welker was 2nd worst in the league in drops last year, danny is 5 years younger and cheaper, good decision. don’t forget the superbowl drop. huge. we win if he catches it.

    • espnut32

When youre targeted almost 140 times chances are you might have a few drops thats a poor argument

  • Paul Burke

As much as I don’t want to admit it, I think Minihane got it right this time.  Bellichick blew it on this one.  Of course, Bill B. wouldn’t put much stock in my input, I’m just a “fan”.  I’m sure that Bill B has a master plan (Plan B–Why do always have to work with Plan B) after he loses his most prolific receiver as he has done in the past.  I hope it’s better than the master plans after losing key receivers and defenders in the past.  I may be wrong, but since the Patriots have let go key players  in the past, it’s taken a hell of a long time to win the BIG ONE.  But then again, what do I and all Patriots fans know–we’re just fans.

  • Jim

    Offensive.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004375206418 Stuart Mackleby

there was also $3M in incentives for each contract year. It was a 2 year $16M dollar deal.
Go read teh Musket Fire article it is very, very good and very unbiased.

  • brandonruns

Where do all of the Pats fans come from who think this game is played on paper?  Like, “Well… ‘this guy, that guy, and this guy’ can step in and replace Welker. Anyone can fill in because it’s all about Brady making them better.”  First of all, ‘these guys’ can’t do a darn thing for you when they’re injured off and on all year. This isn’t fantasy football. And, in real life, the Pats just let go of their most durable target.  Hernandez has dropped critical passes in key games, too, btw.  When half of the receiving corp is injured again next season, you’ll wish you had Welker on the field to at least get the team to those big games.  The Pats don’t make it to AFC Championships and Super Bowls by waving a magic wand.
