Report: Wes Welker in ‘serious talks’ with Broncos 03.13.13 at 2:50 pm ET
By

The Broncos are engaged in “serious talks” with slot receiver Wes Welker, and are trying to hammer out an agreement, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 31-year-old Welker, who has caught at least 100 passes in five of the last six seasons with the Patriots, is considered one of the premiere free agents on the market. Schefter added that a decision on a possible move is expected sometime Wednesday.

Can’t say I’m surprised… but I can’t say I’m happy to hear this either.  He’s going to do well with Peyton if Denver is where he ends up.  It’ll be interesting to see if this becomes official, what the offer actually is.  Time for the Pats to start moving forward with their new strategy.  Personally, I think they would be better to find two guys to catch 40-50 passes rather than having to rely so much on Welker to catch 100+.  As we’ve seen, he can’t catch them all, and some of the ones he hasn’t caught have been huge.  Best of luck to him, though, whatever he decides.

  • Reality Check

Fine by me.  Then the Pats will sign Pollard who will put Welker into retirement in their first game next year.

  • Dansdrs

     That’s not funny moron

  • DAPATS

SEE YA…..cost the PATS a SB and drop big passes against the Ravens – In Bill We Trust

  • Troll Hunter

Not surprised either considering the Patriots tried to phase him out of the offense knowing this day was coming last year. They will move Hernandez to slot and probably add at least one deep threat to loosen up underneath coverage. Considering they have Ballard to take Hernandez’ spot it’s not a bad move as long as the money saved is spent on some impact defensive players. The one huge issue is both Gronk and Hernandez have had a ton of injuries and will again miss time next year. This would look so much better if they can get Jennings or part with their first rounder(not in Bill’s nature) and sign Cruz.

  • trollhunter

I would not be a bit surprized if the do pick up pollard !   welker comment not funny.

  • Tkillay

Players only care about squeezing out every penny hiding behind their agents like (expletive)! The Patriots only care about winning. It’s a mercenary league.

  • Dissapointedpatsfan

This is awful, if Tom Brady’s gotta be completely pissed about this.  I can’t say I blame him.

  • … What It Is

So far, this seems to be the Patriots strategy this offseason:
    1. Let Wes Welker sign with the Broncos.

    2. Let Aqib Talib sign elsewhere.

    3. Bring in a bunch of low-cost, mediocre “value picks” and “redemption projects” that mostly miss, not hit.

    4. Draft a few no names in April and hope Bill Belichick can “coach them up”. Works about as well as it has the last 4-5 seasons (on Defense, anyway).

    5. Go about 10-6 in the regular season, including a few embarrassing losses where Brady is held to about 100 yards (everyone double-covers Gronk and Hernandez) and a young, inexperienced secondary lets up 40+ points.

    6. 10-6 is not that bad in a weak AFC East mind you, should still be enough to win Division and make Playoffs, though Dolphins could make things interesting.

    7. Get humiliated in the Divisional Round by a much stronger opponent. Or possibly the WC Round if the Pats limp into the Playoffs decimated by injury.

    8. Rinse and repeat next offseason, as the Pats continue their downhill slide “but still have a TON of cap space to work with”.

I see people hating on him over the Super Bowl non-catch. Insane. You cannot put a loss on one player. Don’t even bring up the AFC Championship game vs. the Super Bowl Champion Ravens. That one had NOTHING to do with Welker. The non-catch (not using the word “drop”) in the Super Bowl was one of several. Putting it on Welker is beyond insane! Mark my words: if Wes Welker goes to the Broncos, it will end up hurting the Patriots in two ways: they’ll lose a 100+ catch machine who is extremely reliable and durable, AND he’ll be helping their chief AFC rivals not named the Baltimore Ravens.

If he leaves, I will be one of the Patriots fans that will be sad. Aaron Hernandez can’t simply be put there and produce the same results. No way.  And you think Danny Amendola is suddenly going to magically stay healthy? Same with Edelman!!

I hope he stays. I really do.

  • DAPATS

Look who Tom bangs…..are you kidding me…..Hey Giselle can you please put on Wes’s jersey as I need something to whip with

  • quit complaining

could be just me but weren’t the pats winning when welker didn’t catch that pass?

  • Troll Hunter

Cut and paste much?!? BTW how about we wait until he actually signs with the Broncos and see what the Patriots do in free agency?

  • Cmsoares81

i sed exactly the same thng. we need tht guy bad so he stops hurting us evrywer

  • Gray

Well I wasnt going to bring it up but Brady threw Wes the pass one can throw rignt into his breadbasket and he was wide open – Get at least 3 more points if he catches it.. Big drops in Big games.. Im not saying dont sign far from him lol but to say he didnt have a huge drop or that it wasnt on him is reaching a bit

  • truth

    better city denver..
    kinder gentler media denver..
    coach who will treat
    him with respect denver..

  • Rilawman

Maybe the Pats will finally realize that defense wins championships and you are not going to win with a bunch of low budget players on that side of the ball.  This team needs corners, safeties and DL that can rush the passer.  Welker will be in the area of 9 million a year which is too much for a slot on the other side of 30.
And for those who say stop hating on Welker, Troy Brown makes those catches.

  • Jimmy Freeze

    Highly predictable…excellent fit!

Elway’s building up to make a run with Payton for his golden years…
BB is too stubborn to adjust his approach with Brady well into the back 9

I hope WW gets paid…it will actually be fun to watch he and Payton tear it up in the West…will be double drama if the Pats travel to Denver for a playoff game.  I bet WW goes for 13 catches. 115 yds. 2 TDs

The only saving grace is if Pats sign Talib, and somehow get Revis or some other lockdown guy + a pass rusher…but that will cost gazillions more than WW would have ever costed

  • Anonymous

There were more non-catches than just that one. Gronk on the Hail Mary as time expired; Aaron Hernandez; Branch…it wasn’t just Welker.

  • Anonymous

     Denver’s not a better city
the media “kinder and gentler”? With the Broncos? No way.
“respect” is such an over-used word in sports. Who says BB doesnt treat him with “respect”? Are you in the locker room? No? So how do you know?

  • Troll Hunter

”The only saving grace is if Pats sign Talib, and somehow get Revis or
some other lockdown guy + a pass rusher…but that will cost gazillions

No offense, but they had to do that whether or not they signed Welker. Not sure what one has to do with the other? Defense will/would have been much harder to stockpile if they signed Welker at 9-10 million per. No doubt they will miss Welker if he leaves but let’s see what they do with their cap space.

  • pete from Pebble

told u that(denver) 10 days ago..wonder who the genius will get to make those
100 catches and run punts back..now talib to Indy and all right with the world
    nice words bob kraft

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Wes makes them too most of the time, which leads naive fans to think he should catch them all.  Catch 500 passes and fans are pissed because you miss two. The guy is a gamer, tough and dedicated and the kind of player teams like to build around.  The kind of guy I have to root for.

  • Adios

    Mike Gambardella ‏@BIG3Sports
#Broncos are almost done with deal for Wes Welker. He’ll join Peyton Manning’s stacked WR core of Demaryius Thomas & Eric Decker. #patriots

  • Chonor0713

This friggen team is millions under the cap and still haven’t spent a dime.  This is a joke. SCRAP HEAP PICKERS

  • Christopher Aufiero

WAIT WAIT! We may sign Joshua Cribbs! Next we can add Heyward Bay!  Wow! Cribbs had 6 catches!  I can hear it now Just if Cribbs had a QB Just if Heyward Bay had Brady!  Bey is the missing link since Moss left!  Welker has won nothing! Pink hats will be coming out of the closet!  What a joke this off season has been!  28 million under the cap!  We can’t sign a WR who missed NO regular season games after tearing a ACL!  Wes played while Bill We TRUST PAID OCHO CINCO MORE THAN WES!  What a joke!  This is like when we felt anyone could catch passes from Brady! Bye Givens and Branch in comes Donald Hayes sand Reche Cadwell.  Doink wide eyes drops a wide open pass in the playoffs!  Oh wait i can hear it now Adalius Thomas stunk when we spent money!  We have signed what four big time players in free agency in Bills time.  1.  Rodney Harrison! 2. Colvin good player who got hurt. 3 Ocho Cinco 4  Adiulus Thomas!  Thomas is the only big time player we have gotten in the Brady era i can think of that is a bust!

  • whatthewhat?

I thought Denver only had 7.25 in cap space? How low was the Pats offer? Maybe Denver is willing to offer 4-5 years?  I would never go more than 3… as much as I love having him here and watching him play.

  • Everyone

Welker is a 50 catch guy when not in a NE uniform.  That’s the business.

  • Troll Hunter

I just saw they have over 12 million in space after cutting a couple of guys yesterday. I’m sure any deal would be stretched over 4-5 years anyway to save space.

  • Mplfl

in all honesty, this is not the biggest loss, he was great but lets be honest what did we ever win with him here. a lot of games yes, but no champioship! I want defensive backs and a sack guy, this will help win, not a 100 pass catcher, we never had that when we won! defense wins, ie Ravens!

  • manny

4 years $45 million is what i herd

  • manny

thats way over priced, no wonder, the pats let him go

  • whatthewhat?

4 and 45? If that is true, forget it.  That is #1 receiver, tall, Fast, strong, between the ages of 24-27 wide out money.

  • Troll Hunter

Wow, over a 11 million per? No way the Pats should have even been in the ballpark. Wes was fantastic here and I wish him well but man that’s big money for a slot receiver.

  • Laughing at your comments

    the truth?

better city my %SS, ever bee there, actually ever been to Boston? Denver’s best days are way behind it… I’ll betcha your a Western Ma resident who travels to the big city of Albany for fun…..respect? they gave him a ton of money man….

  • Donalmcl27

Robert Kraft is a man of many faces.  We only see the happy smiling one, but to be as successful as he has been in business, he has to have a frowning, grimace laden face used in negotiations, that is hidden from his Patriots following. His comments unfortunately must be taken with 3 or 4
    grains of salt.

The Patriots should just match this and get it over with.
