Reports: Patriots agree on deal with receiver Danny Amendola 03.13.13 at 7:34 pm ET

Danny Amendola (AP)

Danny Amendola (AP)

The Patriots have agreed in principle on a five-year contract with free agent wide receiver Danny Amendola, according to multiple reports.

The 5-foot-10, 186-pound slot receiver out of Texas Tech, who will turn 28 next November, had 63 catches in 11 games in 2012 and a career-high 85 catches for 689 yards and three touchdowns in 2010. However, he has dealt with his share of injuries over the last few seasons — Amendola has played in 12 games the last two seasons because of heel, foot and clavicle problems.

The move to add Amendola appears to be an answer to the loss of Wes Welker.  Earlier in the day, the veteran Welker left New England for Denver on a two-year, $10 million deal. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Amendola’s deal is for five years and $31 million, with $10 million guaranteed.

    BOR ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • Fenian

exactly….as if spending money equates to good teams…(see recent red sox)….you need to scout/sign/develop young talent so you don’t end up talking to dip ship Boras…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Crowley/100001398780186 Paul Crowley

    Boras…the King of Gibberish!!!

  • Soxfansince75

He makes good points. Productive 2Bs are rare, corner outfielders are not. Today, many teams can spend over the luxury tax threshold due to their huge profits as compared to the early 2000s. You can’t have competitive teams year in and year out through developing young talent. You need to supplement that young talent with Grade A superstars. To get the Grade A superstars, you need to go through Boras.

  • Rob Woodwards sump pump

Regardless of anyones opinion of him(I highly doubt Boras cares), he is an intelligent businessman. He does the job he is asked to do 30% better than anyone else. Ballplayers want to make money, he gets it for them. We should all be so good at our jobs…

  • bbraves

I agree with Rob you do not have to like him but I do not hate him , i WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH HIM REPLACING ONE OF THE STOOGES (LARRY) he makes people crazy because he does what he get’s hired to do make his clients more money. Take the emotion out of it Nation , he can my ball club any day if he was paid on how the club did for the year . Scott I do not like your style or bravado but you are the best at what you do !!!!!

  • AndyP

Boras is always a font of propaganda on behalf of himself and his clients.

  • scrappycoco

“I think any reference to what I call the Goliath tax is frankly a de minimus issue

    love it!!…lol….yes boras, gluteus minimus

  • Curmudgelah

Shut up, Boras.  Your boy Jacoby is Fred Lynn, reincarnate.  He’s as fragile as they come and will likely not produce very much after age 30.   One would hope that Cherington & Co. don’t listen to his rhetoric and get  pressured into signing Ells to an A-Rod type deal.

  • Gibba1924

28 and faster with better hands …. Upgrade … as long as he can stay healthy …. the other shoe just dropped!!!

  • PatsFaninPA

Watch Amendola be the super bowl mvp next year

  • Kenny Powers

The timing of this is superb.  Definitely a “last word” moment for the Patriots in a relationship that apparently soured over time.

  • markfromlynn

Like the move. Amendola played under McDaniels,is 4 yrs younger than Welker. Now hopefully they”ll address the defense!

  • Truddster

I think that owners and coaches should have to be drug tested, cu they must be on crack to basically spend more money to get almendola over Welker…..Tommy must be reallllllly happy after he restructured his contract so they could sign Welker

  • Giselle

    is his wife hot?

  • Titletown1

OK, I understand that Amendoal is four years younger than Welker and comes to the Pats at a point in his career much like Wes’ when he came to New England. If he can stay healthy, the Pats will make out in this deal. He’s locked up for five years.

This signing doesn’t change the fact that the Pats need help on the defensive side of the ball…get going BB!

  • Typical Boston Fan

Will he drop key fourth quarter passes? No? WELCOME TO THE TEAM DANNY BOY!!!!

  • Anonymous

Sometimes I just like to stick it in Bill’s face…..oops!

  • Mark5s2002

Give me Welker any day……..Lets see how Danny and his lingering injuries endure the AFC east. Rather have Welker period……….

  • Titletown1

I wouldn’t be jumping for joy because Amendola played for McDaniels previously. Don’t forget a certain dud named Brandon Lloyd also played for McDaniels and McDaniels vouched for him…

  • ih8sno

That’s how you fix things!!!  This kid’s a gamer.  Perfect fit!

  • Typical Boston Fan

    Dud? better Than Ochocrappo

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Wait, they went 5 years for more annual money than they offered Welker?  Neither the team nor Wes wanted to be together.  Dr. Phil:  ”He’s not that into you.”  Wife is from Colorado and he sold his condo months ago. Why the need for spin???????

  • Gibba1924

     Brandon Lloyd REC-74 YARDS-911 TD’S 4 …. Seems to have worked out okay …..

  • Typical Boston Fan

Sir you are probably very correct on this.

  • hooper

He is not nearly as tough as welker. I am surprised he is even a slot receiver. i’ll give him the benefit of doubt we’ll see how he holds up…..prediction he plays 8-12 games and is out for the playoff run.

  • Pope Francis

Jennings will be next w/ enough $$ left over to sign 2-3 decent Defensive FAs.  Draft another WR in 2nd Rnd.  Rolling the dice a little with Amen but only 28.

  • Anonymous

Amendola got injured because there was NO other WR on the Rams team. I like this signing. Take a WR in the draft and everything else is D improvements.

  • Bcote

Wes Welker’s greatest attribute has been his amazingly consistent PRODUCTION week in and week out, and his amazing DURABILITY for his size. He played in more games this past season than Amendola has played in 3 seasons. Apologists for the BS “in Bill We Trust” crowd will soon be crying when Amendola is nursing a sore piggy toe on the sideline for 6 games while Welker lights it up with Peyton and 10+ catches every game in Denver. Mark this down: Welker will have at least 2X the productivity as Danny Boy but season’s end. I hope the Broncos and #18 run a passing clinic when they come to Foxboro and play scrimmage vs. the high school DB’s we’ll be running out there. Nice job, BB … and nice ‘assurance’ from Mr. Kraft of Wes’s “Patriot for Life” run … what was it, all of a week Mr. Kraft? who’s RUNNING this team anyway? Guess we kmow that the owner has no real say!

  • Spitfire1064

this was the plan all the while.

  • Nathanlamb75

A five-year deal for a guy who is 28 and has played 12 games the past 2 seasons because of injury? Is this what they meant with ‘shopping at Walmart’ ?

  • Cambee

So, Josh gets fired from Denver and goes to Rams. He gets fired from there and comes back to the Patriots. Now the Rams are coming here. Great, the pats are getting worse by the hour while Miami upgrades acros the board.

This is a dumb move! Come October 31, the patriots will be searching for help at WR. Nearly half the damn team is injury prone. Great!!!

  • markfromlynn

Little reminder: Before coming here,Welker’s career high for receptions was 67. Amendola caught 85 balls in his last full season with STL and his injuries have been a dislocated elbow and broken collarbone. Not exactly back spasms and  a sore hammy. If he can stay healthy he’s an upgrade over Welker.

  • southofthecity

Haha, “Upgrade.” Good one. Amendola is no Welker. He’s played in 12 combined games the past two seasons. Welker missed 4 combined games in 6 seasons with Pats. Danny has a long way to go to approach the greatest slot WR ever to play.

  • http://profiles.google.com/nikcomp Tony Nicholas

Lets take a bet  that Gronk, Hernandez and Amendola will actually play more than 1 game together.  Better chance all three are on IR than together

  • Liztramonti

Mcdaniels is overrated as coach, i could coach Tom Brady.

  • Anonymous

     That was fast.

  • Spiritinthesky59

Not good! Rather play Edelman & draft a kid. Weller was older but more durable. Wes got hosed by BE. Best of luck to him!

  • Cfn

This is good, he had 65 catches in 11 games last year.  We still need to bring Edleman in as punt returner and back up if he goes down.  I wonder what will happen with Lloyd now?

  • Me

     get real. Terrible move.

  • chris

is anybody already flash forwarding to the pats in the playoffs next year and jus imagning the ways that Mayor Menino will screw up danny amendolas name in his mayoral bet phone call….we have already had the likes of Wes Wekler and Vince Wilcock , Not to mention one of the Most memorable moments in boston sports history when “varitek Split those uprights…..ohh god i can hardly wait for it!!!

  • Anonymous

Didn’t Welker turn down a 2/16MM offer from the Pats last summer? I believe he just pulled a mini-Nomar.

  • C2

the only way that call would be better is if the pats signed namdi asomugha on top of it…

  • Joe

peyton hillis is the next signing….white guy, running back

  • JT0920

Dumb move. Huge waste of money. We could have had Welker, the best slot receiver in football for the same money per year and he can stay on the field. What a slap in the face to Brady and the fans. Another Belichick band aid. Don’t pay the legit and proven talent we have, let’s try and create them in the aggregate and not win another superbowl.

  • C2

not really he made 9.5 mill last year on top of the 2 yr 12 mill he gets now he nets an extra 5 mill and its all guranteed..

  • Concreteman002861

lets see, 12 games in two years ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, means he missed 20 games in two years 10 per year

  • Anonymous

They offered him a 2 year extention at $16 million last summer – he turned it down.

  • Nancy

disgraceful, disgusting, disrespectful, shame on the patriots.

  • WhaleBelly

New England is going to love this guy. He is one hellva player. Please give him a chance. It is not his fault that Welker left.

  • Anonymous

Shame on Welker…. he could have signed for $16 million last summer.

  • markfromlynn

Ochocinco was a dud. Lloyd caught 74 balls for 911 yds. his first year here. I’ll take a dud like that anytime.

  • espnut32

I dont know about you but Im not willing to let the Pats off as easy as some of you are. While I understand the comparisons and the age difference, its just ridiculous to let Wes walk at such short money and pay this guy more per year. Im all for moving on from a guy who looks to be passed his prime but did he look like he was slowing down at all to you???

  • markfromlynn

Yes you’re right…refresh my memory. How many Super Bowls did the Pats win with Welk..oops…sorry…none. Who was that guy who dropped the pass that would’ve won the Super Bowl last year? Nuff said.

  • markfromlynn

Gronk’s getting traded to Arizona for Larry Fitzgerald. Pats have big Jake Ballard coming back to take Gronk’s spot.

  • ScoopBurton

This guy is a paper champion…Check out the average number of games a year he plays…The new ” Mister Durable “

  • markfromlynn

Exactly! Welker can’t say he wasn’t offered more money than he took in Denver!

  • markfromlynn

If Lloyd will agree to restructure his deal they’ll keep him,if not he’s most likely gone.

  • Mattmcw

Your tough talking predictions don’t mean anything. No one will be able to hold you accountable at the end of the season when you’re wrong. You’ll be nowhere to be found. And Kraft is allowing his GM and coach to make the football decisions, like all successful owners do. Pick a new team to root for, since you’re so much smarter than the people running this one, which is one of the most successful in recent history.

  • C2

I AGREE but the thing is if u watch the pats over the years welker gets smacked about 25 times a game and the same thing is probably comin for amendola i jus hope his body can withstand the beating

  • Defense time

Danny deal 10 million guaranteed same as welker would’ve gotten.

  • JarvisGrislore

Plain and simple..he wasn’t wanted here anymore.  It was his time to go just like Law, Milloy, etc.  He went public last year about his displeasure and that sealed it.  If they wanted him, they would have payed him plain and simple a long time ago.  If they want you…they will pay you.  Time to move on for both parties.
Now it’s time to bring in some attitude on D, need a guy or 2 with a mean streak.

  • bguy

AFC East is NOW one of the weakest divisions in the nfl.  Jets & Bills??
Dolphins in cold weather?  The Patriots still have a considerable amount of
$$ left under the cap. Let’s wait and see what else is coming.

  • Anonymous

Unfortunately he turned the 10MM down; last year he turned down $16MM…. face it, he wanted out of New England. Hurt feelings? Embarrassment over 2 costly SB drops (NE fans don’t forget)? Who knows.

  • Bruinman86

Agreed.  Not sure about the health, but welker wasn’t very fast.  This is taller as well.  So he could be an upgrade in some areas.  Hope it works out.

  • Langleyinnewengland

10 million guaranteed? Save 3 million and dump Welker?  Bill might be on crack!

  • Tcurtis1953

    Funny!! Lol

  • TCurtis1953

Will miss #83….. but turn the page

  • CAPatsFan

WW/agent were offered 2/16mil$ this past summer. They said no. WW/agent were offered 2/10mil$ recently. They said no again. WW/agent shopped that last Pats’ offer and got Denver/Elway to bite (2/12mil$). They get Amedola for the same price WW gets from Denver but a longer term (because Amendola is 4 yrs. younger than WW). Yes, he’s been injured and has to prove he can get thru a whole season. But there was no guarantee WW would stay injury free again, either. I really liked WW but Amendola (if he stays healthy?) is an adequate replacement. Next, we need a couple o stopper DBs and an impact pass rusher (or two). I’m OK with this.

  • Wes Welker’s Ghost

Get used to seeing “doubtful” next to his name almost weekly.

  • Foss 67

For the 2 year $10 Million price of keeping Welker, why would’nt keeping both be a problem? Amendola is young but injury prone; Welker is older but resilient and slot receiver is a Key Position for the Pats.
I agree that next focus has to be the Defense- secondary and more down lineman-pass rusher strength.

  • Airgaber

Bad Move…Danny’s injury is one that just doesnt go away.  Especially playing in the afc east weather conditions.  not good

  • wombat

Even with Brady on the field, Welker has been my favorite player for years.  There have been very few players at any position as durable as Welker and as dependable to do the job assigned.  Which receiver didn’t drop a few passes, especially considering how many were thrown his way?  Who caught more than Welker?  Count me as one who will root for Welker over the Patriots in 2013 and beyond–I hope he eats their lunch.  A terrible decision not to resign him–especially at these dollars!

  • markfromlynn

Agreed. No one knew who Welker was until he got here either.

  • Kalevesque

thank you i totally agree and catch the ball in stride because he is faster and not have to dive for it because he is too slow

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

I don’t think there’s any blame.  Welker wanted to go and the Pats wanted to move one.  Sadly we fans are deprived of a great player.  The only sad part is them paying his replacement more. Weird.

  • Jimmy Freeze

Flie…There aren’t any other wide receivers on THIS TEAM…

  • Djb1978

Can’t think of a softer receiver than Lloyd.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

If you’re going to blame management (BB) it’s for the events of last season.  At this point both wanted to move on.  I just don’t know why both sided had to play Charades and make it sound like they were negotiating.  Also not sure why his replacement got so much dough.  A true impact downfield threat maybe, but the inside is pretty well taken care of with two great TEs. Hope they stay healthy or this offense is in trouble, though.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Yes. Exactly.  And we’ll miss him – hard nosed player.

  • Dano50

“Guess we know that the owner has no real say!”…

Let’s hope.  Leave the job to the professionals he hired.  Wise man that Kraft.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Doubtful upgrade.  Welker gets open. We’ll see.  I hope so too.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

It wasn’t a decision.  He was off to Denver.  The real decision was a year ago, not committing when it looked like the team was loaded and Edelman was the heir apparent. A mistake then, never repaired, and he was leaving regardless.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Welker dives because TB throws it where nobody else can get it.  He’s the BEST at the low catch.

  • espnut32

My biggest beef is they wouldnt sign him to a long term deal because of his age. Thats understandable, but as I understand it he came back to the Pats to allow them to match the offer. 2 years, thats no long term and the money was not out of control. Amendola is not a bad player but lets just see if he can get on the same page as Brady, chemistry should count for something

  • Bruinman86

well, he’s 4 years younger than wes, has far less miles and hits taken, he’s faster, supposedly has better hands and has better break away speed. Plus he isn’t on bad terms with the teams like welker had grown to be.  No knock on Welker, but they have a plan in mind that we just won’t know for a few months, so I’ll wait to judge them on the final product. I do admire the balls this team has in not being afraid of change. I hope they made the right choice.

  • http://twitter.com/davidlynch1983 david lynch

I hate the Amendola signing from the point Welker cost about the same from the Broncos now I’ll put it this way if the patriots don’t do anything with their defense it’s time to hold BB accountable finally I’ve been his supporter for years I can’t fathom this being a good idea. They better get two good DB’s Grimes and Smith plus a safety

  • Dopplereffect

McDaniels is ruining this team. His 2nd-half playcalling stinks and he’s recruiting mediorce players. If the Pats don’t get some a-list secondary help they’re not going to superbowl calibre

  • Dano50

Only 10 mil guaranteed. Not THAT big a risk.  Wes could get hurt too you know.  You guys are putting a serious jinx on the guy by assuming otherwise.

  • Douchey McDouche

At least it will be entertaining to see Mumbles Menino try to pronounce his name.

  • Rumple4skin

The pats won their Superbowls when Tommy used to throw the ball around to the OPEN RECIEVER. Welker is great, but I feel like Tom got away from what made him special and forced the ball to Welker too much. Danny is fragile, but still good. Tom can get back to hitting the OPEN RECIEVER…. We need a Rodney Harrison type as safety. We have our Ed Reed type in McCourty, if we can keep Talib, sign Adriane Wilson, we would be in business. HAHAHAHAHA JETS SUCK

  • PatsFan1

That “dud” caught over 70 passes

  • Gino

Assante Samuel, Richard Seymour and Wes Welker…….Beichick and the Krafts have a loyalty problem….maybe they want all the cap money for themselves! No more Super Bowls for the Cheap Traitors!!!!

  • Berge95

When Wes gets hit over the middle he gets up.  Wes will play more games in two years than Danny Amendola will play in five.

  • perfect for young QBs

i was just thinking that.  He may end up being really good with brady throwing to him, but I don’t think he could produce as much as Welker could have for the next two years….bradys not exactly young, so you’d think they’d want that chemistry and guranteed production while his championship window is still open.  Welker didn’t ask for much and based on what he got, it’s clear he is one of the most underrated players in the league.  With all these young QBs in the league, you’d think teams would want the best slot receiver to help the qbs gain confidence and also to take pressure off of them as they complete short yard passes.

  • JOSievers

I have to agree with you on this.  I think BB’s ego got in the way.  He was pi**ed that Welker didn’t bow down to the Patriot way and chose the road that benefited him best by taking the money, playing for another team with a BETTER defense, a ton of cap room and not to mention, probably the best QB ever to play the game. Advantage Welker!  Does this sound anything like the Adam Vinatieri story?  Leave the Pats and win a SB under Manning the following season.  I am forever a Pats fan, but Amendola is not a Welker replacement.  We will be whining and moaning like babies when he gets hurt and misses half of the season.  This is simply an ego signing to show Welker we can move on.  ”We will pay him the contract you wanted, take that!”  Wes will be laughing his a** off when he torches our crappy secondary for 10+ catches and 136 yds.  Write that down as my prediction!

  • DennisVT

He’s no Welker. Let’s see how many hits he can take and bounce right back up. How soon some of you forget all the good things Welker has done.

  • James

We already knew the owner has no real say.  He’s the owner, he does not sign players.  That’s the GM’s role aka Belichick.

  • injuries

hopefully between him and Edelman, one of them will be healthy.

  • JOSievers

You guys are delusional!  This was an ego signing from BB to show Wes that we can move on by giving another WR the contract he wanted. The only way I will be satisfied with this is if they sign a solid CB with the Brady restructured contract.  I wouldn’t mind seeing a defense that could actually rank higher than 28th-32nd in pass defense.

We did this back in ’06 and we exceeded expectations by making it to the AFC championship game.  We had a defense back then.  The defense scored points for us in that game.  In the end, the defense collapsed and Brady didn’t have the star power to hold on to the 21-6 lead. This time we have no defense.  You write the rest of the story…

  • Ztigr

“Amendola has played in 12 games the last two seasons because of heel, foot and clavicle problems.”,  Seems I remember some miraculous comebacks from Welker….

  • Innovator

    Hey Tony,where are you from?

  • Bragging_Rights

Actually WW’s ego got the best of him. Don’t forget…he turned down a 2 year extension at $16MM last year.

  • Cfn

You are wrong.  We need a slot receiver to get us down field and 1st downs.  We have been making playoffs last 5 years, despite our awful defense, because of the slot receiver.  This is why we will also sign Edleman, in case Amendola goes down.  Amendola is same as WW, just unlucky with the injuries he got.  Put him with TB and he will be just as good and clutch.  BB know that our offense needs Amendola to be successful since Wes became greedy and would not take an 8mil a year deal last year.

  • Teechef

the afc east ? they could trade brady and win it . c’mon . who’s gonna hurt us ? the jets ?

  • Animalsbrother

To say he is no Welker I say Welker was no Welker in Miami as well as San Diego and I guess at Texas tech that’s why he was drafted so high or should I say not at all . See Wes thanks for five years but the machine keeps rolling along with or without you

  • Spinkat

Danny Amendola. Big deal. Now we know exactly what the Patriots have been thinking and we can trust this move no better than so many stupid moves that the Patriots have taken over the past half dozen years. Somebody in the Pats “braintrust” is clearly suffering from a massive BrainFa*t. In the past two years Amendola has played a total of 12 games and been injured the majority of that time. He’s averaged 8.8 yds a catch and, in his best year, he had 85 receptions for 689 yds. Wes Welker (on a yearly basis) has shown zero evidence of decline statistically or, frankly, for anyone who is able to see. Wes has played 32 games in the last 2 years and has missed only 3 games in his entire career thus far, despite major ACL surgery. In the last 6 years, Wes had averaged 112 catches and 1243 yards. Given the amount of money they’re shelling out for 5 years for a guy who just doesn’t have anywhere near Welker’s numbers and whose ability to stay healthy is a mystery, where’s the genius in this? Also, consider that Tom Brady isn’t going to be around forever. At his age, and given that he has already shown a decline in passing accuracy, would it not have made sense to make Wes a SERIOUS offer and keep that Brady-Welker combo together for at least two more years? Would it not have made more sense to spend money on DBs in the hope that maybe they didn’t misfire on defensive signings…yet again?? Seems to me the Patriots dropped the ball on this one–horribly! This is a repeat of Richard Seymour, only now they won’t have the offense to try and pick up the slack. Whatever faith I still held out (despite the evidence) in the Patriots’ decision making has now completely evaporated. The emperor indeed has no clothes. And now I no longer will be making excuses for Belichick’s arrogance and the fact that he has shown little ability to select talent for many years now.

  • football wizard

Another one who played under McDaniels, not a great signing point!

  • cambee

So….DA for WW money. Sounds like that value on the deal is there. NOT! Jonathan Kraft and BB need to step down from the decision making process.

Now, rumor on the street is that Ed Reed is headed to Texans. Well, you saved $3mil on WW for what?

The 8 years curse will continue for Brady. Unfortunately, I don’t think that he will ever win another, and it will be a good 7-10 years before the Patriots come back to power. Sad day!

  • football wizard

Good point. Time to get any slot guy out of that situation though. someone else needs to be the guy to step up for the money catch in playoffs/superbowl, not neccessarily someone we have NOW, because they’re never healthy!

  • Backfromthedepths

can’t stay healthy and not as good as welker. DOWNGRADE and a reaction to all of the fans from today. Period.

  • Innovator

Or how about mallett and a first for Fitz and keep Gronk?  Win win for both teams,as Arizona has an 18 million dollar roster bonus due on Fitz 12 months from now,and Andre Roberts and Michael Floyd are doing just fine!

  • Old Time Hockey

Lloyd caught 70 some odd passes for over 900 yards. I would say that’s pretty good for your 4th option.

  • Old Time Hockey

everybody knows that NFL players can be cut at almost any point with very little penalty. In 2 years if he continues to get hurt he will be cut and we will move on.

  • Old Time Hockey

and of course Edelman is so reliable

  • Ryan Griffin

    yeah

  • Ryan Griffin

    you’re overrated as a commentator

  • Ryan Griffin

Thank You Dr Airgaber. This site is full of GM’s and doctors with hs diplomas

  • Innovator

I agree,Bruinman,,and another thing noone else is talking about as far as Amendola is concerned: his deal may be for 5 years and 31 million,,but I bet that the deal is extremely backloaded, and extremely cap friendly in the beginning,,,to the tune of we’ll say,a 3 million or 3.5 million cap hit in year one?  So its almost Welker for Amendola, plus whomever we get with the extra money..

  • Ryan Griffin

That’s three guys you named in 12 years of Belichick era. there isn’t a team out there that hasn’t lost more than that in 12 years. Bill has a team to run. You could be like the C’s and keep all your great players until they are ready for the grave and then suck for the next 20 years or you can move on be competitive every year.

here’s a quick fact for you Spinkat. The Pats have been the best team in football for the past 12 years. They have not only remained a super bowl favorite every year but have rebuilt on the fly while still staying competitive. Fans can be Nostalgic but Bill doesn’t have time for that crap he has a team to run and they will once again be Super Bowl favorites. you have no clue.

  • Soxknation

Not an answer (with injury history) for Welker loss, but another wheel in the cog of this Offensive machine. Time to shore up the D & it could work.

  • W1cgm

It seems like the Pats never really place much importance on WRs. Don’t know why. Have they ever drafted a WR in the first round?

Walker’s serious ACL/MCL injury could have happened during any game, but his blew out on the last game so didn’t miss any games. Would we be harking his god-like durability if it had happened in the 4th game instead and missed the balance of season? The new guy’s injuries seem like stupid variety like edelman/ellsbury type. Maybe he’ll have no more “bad luck” injuries?
I’m gonna assume that Bill affirmed with film and conversations, that Amendola’s high praise from Josh was indeed warranted. We’l see. If he catches a 5 yd pass and actually outruns the safety for a TD, maybe Patriot Nation will realize a faster top end IS very desirable!
I thought it a neet coincidence that his contract runs the same length as Brady’s, ie sorry no Wes Tom, but we got you a faster guy that can be your go-to mate for entire 5 years of your contract.
    - still hope we sign a tall-fast outside receiver AND keep Lloyd. His growing ability to connect with TB on the over-the-shoulder catch which is very difficult to defend, makes him an above average option.
If they end up playing with a two TE offense on 75% of downs, then I hope we really do sign a fast-tall guy to take the pressure off a crowded middle and forces deep safety help on many plays.

I’m going to be optimistic on the trade-off of slot reciever. I’m sure Wes would’ve had another 1 and probably two great years left in tank, but we now have position filled with a highly talented guy for potentially next 5 years.

  • Garyritter

The slot position in New England affords open receivers by the design of the offense. Troy Brown was huge in the slot. Welker was better. Amendola will do very well. What no one seems to be mentioning is that Welker had the second highest drop ratio in the NFL( 1 out of 12 balls) and Amendola had the second lowest drop ratio ( 1 out of 23 balls). Amendola is the sure handed receiver Welker used to be.

Okay…so they didn’t want Wes anymore. Fine, it sucks ..but fine. You don’t want to pay a guy for what he has done when he is older. But why Danny Areola? This guy is not strong enough. Why not Josh Cribbs who could fill two roles and may…just may be able to stay on the field for more then 7 plays.  I thought that this was going to be a down year, maybe 8-8 or 9-7 based off the schedule. but now…who knows.  I hope Osi and something at corner gets pulled in here and at some point King Bill needs to write a tell all book as to why he has done what he’s done.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Um.  The record seems to disagree with you.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

And maybe a REAL 4-down DE that can get after the QB?  Much hinges on Chandler Jones and of course Gronk.

  • RIChief

Idiotic.  Typical NE yahoos - love Welker while on the team, trash him when he leaves.  Danny is a poor man’s Welker that is injury prone.  The Pats are becoming difficult to root for.  This is a big step down.

  • jjs

I want to see him take the hits Welker did, catch 100 passes every year, and produce. I’ve never seen anyone as tough as Welker in a Pats uniform. The first time Amendola gets creamed over the middle, let’s see what happens. Never mind multiple times a game.

  • Boslad

I agree with your analysis but as far as runs football operations, we all know its Bill. In most NFL teams, save for the Cowboys, the owner delegates football operations to the general manager and the head coach. In New England, they happen to, effectively, be the same person. Double B runs football ops. and Bob Kraft signs the checks.

  • Bruinman86

Well, it’s a start to the remaking of the offense. Expect the axe to fall on Lloyd if they can find another quality wideout.

  • Anonymous

    5 years?

  • Bedardba2

It may be 5 years but only 10 mill is guaranteed so keep that in mind.  Don’t forget had Gronk and Hernandez not been absent for half the year Welkers catch total would have been greatly decreased, probably by close to 30 catches.  Everyone is crying about what are they going to do to replace those 120 catches….well your answer is Gronk and Hernandez not being injured.

Now it’s time to spend on DEFENSE……if they don’t do that then I’ll be up in arms.

  • WHO CARES

Good thing about Danny A. he is younger and well rested and over his injuries. Okay the Pats think this will be an upgrade at the slot position (I don’t). What are they going to do about the other WR position? (stretch the field) Biggest concern on offense. Now on Defense what are the Pats going to do? (pass rusher) ?  (secondary) ?

  • jeremiah johnson

Give me the proven Welker, over Amendolas sidelined stats,  we will be lucky if he’s in 8 games this year. I also think that Belichecks arrogance is catching up with him, what has happened to the defense guru. I also hope the pats spend all they can this year, lets see.

  • Pedro

You Patriot fans crack me up, welker was the best receiver in football for 6 years according to Patriot fans up until yesterday, now he’s the reason they didn’t win the super bowl, he’s a choke, etc. Amendoal is a brittle guy who can’t stay on the field, maybe they got him to keep Gronk company on the DL where they both will spend more time on the DL then the field of play. If he can stay healthy? when has he ever been healthy? I hope the Patriots play Denver and welker catches 5 TD’s

  • Pedro

The only gamer he is is X-Box when he on the DL. Pats screwed up again. Good thing Brady took a pay cut so they could keep the other talent on the club huh?

  • Pedro

You are 100% right. Denver will be the mch better team because of this. And if Bill is such a defensive genuis why does his defense suck every year? And why has he been out coached the last 5 years in every big game?

  • Pedro

If you call losing 2 super bowls in 5 years successful your right. All this talk about Brady being the greatest is a joke, he has lost almost as many super bowls as he has won 3-2 and if he is lucky enough to get there he might catch Jim Kelly with 4 losses in the super bowl and really could be the biggest loser in super bowl history

  • Fab4ever

…and you, like so many, are revisionists…Wes was a nobody in Miami. He became what he is with the Pats and Brady and the system. Look, nobody is denouncing Wes and what he did here, but please…stop with the over glorification. Wes will do fine in Denver..we wish him the best…but it was obvios to anyone with half a brain that once he turned down the renegotiation contract, not once but twice, he was out. There’s drama and gamble in every move…or maybe you’re one of those who thinks it’s always bad or always good…Amendola has to stay on the field, we know that. But I like the gamble…because now, there’s that much more $$ available to fix the bigger issues…and that’s defense and a wide receiver…it’s March and yes, there’s a long way to go…just not in the sense you’re moaning about….

  • Fab4ever

The only idiot is you…..”typical NE yahoos” indeed…..apparently you can’t read….many of the comments here and elsewhere wish Wes the best and applaud his contributions….go find a steak knife and sit on it…

  • Fab4ever

You’re even a bigger idiot than RIChief…Good news. Eli didn’t throw a pick last Sunday….

  • DEFENSE

Wes is done. Branch is gone Seymour is gone. The Pats will still compete. Maybe you all forgot the Sullivan era when the money was all spent on a Jackson tour. Some teams never come close to playoffs.

  • Psycho1039

the real crime in all of this…David Ortiz will make more $$$ this year than Welker will make over the next 2 years….and Welker will probably play more games

  • Bedardba2

    Hey Pedro
You hope Welker catches 5 TD’s against the Pats…..well he only had 6 for the entire season so don’t hold your breath.  He will be missed but the catches can easily be rehashed between, Gronk, Hernandez, Amendola and Ballard.

  • Bedardba2

Where are the Pats defensive moves……..Landry to Indy, Cromartie to Denver, Cox to SD, Reed visiting Texans…..Asomugh (spelling) visiting SF…..Pats sign….no one……Talib update?  Sean Smith update?  No chatter at all.

  • Jlonardo724

Great move! Loved Wes but it was time to move on.

  • Yeeaahh

So, 10 million over two years. That’s 1 million per game.. Cause Danny averages 5 games per year….that’s got to be right up at the top of the league for WR’s.

  • teechef

this is certainly a no brainer . amendola is bigger , faster and won’t drop a big catch . he’ll heal and be a force . a year from now we’ll be saying ” wes who?”
