Scott Pioli: ‘Complex’ situation involving Wes Welker 03.13.13 at 4:38 pm ET

Scott Pioli

Former Patriots GM Scott Pioli, currently working as a guest analyst for NFL Network, spoke Wednesday afternoon about the fluid situation involving free agent wide receiver Wes Welker, who is reportedly now in serious talks about a new deal with the Broncos.

“This is so complex,” said Pioli on the NFL Network. “There are so many different stories going on here. David Dunn, the agent for Wes Welker, has picked a team and a situation [in the Denver Broncos] that can certainly tweak the Patriots. This is very intentional; whether it’s true or whether it’s not true, it’s is very intentional and that’s what agents unfortunately do. One of the things I’ve been talking about with a couple of people here is the Wes Welker dynamic.

“There are so many layers of stuff here. Wes Welker has been a Patriot, he’s had great success – he is an icon in that town; he’s rock star. What you’ve seen from the Patriots is players that leave the Patriots – whether it’s Deion Branch, David Givens, the list goes on and on – the time goes by and then they fall off from a performance standpoint…This is [Welker’s] last contract. He has to make a lifetime decision here as to what’s best for him and what he needs. Obviously there are some frayed relationships here because he wanted more money in another contract. There are so many dynamics at work here.”

Heh, wouldn’t at all be surprised to find out that a lot of the hype about a deal being done soon with the Broncos is mostly agent-driven in order to get the Patriots to up their offer significantly.

It’s as complex as this:  ”Show me the money!”

    He’s a gonner……………………………

If Welker’s agent thinks that this Bronco’s stuff is going to move Bill much, forget it.  The guy doesn’t really flinch.

ESPN (Adam Shefter) reporting a 2-yr. deal is “done”. No money terms as yet?

SO ONLY 2 YEARS $12 MILLION FOR WES WELKER WAS TOO MUCH TO MATCH, SCOTT PEOLI?!

WAY TO CHEAPSKATE THE PATRIOTS BACK INTO MEDIOCRITY LIKE THE CELTICS AND RED SOX!

Sad …. Very Sad ….   Starting to question ‘In Bill We Trust’ .   2 years 12 million for Tom Brady’s security blanket.  Would l0ve to be a fly on the wall when Brady learned of the details.  Me thinks the Brady love affair with Tom, Bill And Robert is over. But then again Brady should have exercised whatever clout he had long before Welker’s contract expired.  Being a good and productive soldier means nothing in New England.  Shame …  Shame … Shame!!!

  • Sad for now

I am upset too , I was upset when branch left too and he won a championship and an MVP in the Super Bowl.lets see what pats will do. We need outside receivers , we have the tight ends for short stuff . Second we need defensive backs and safeties, pollard , reed and devin with Talib will help the loss of welker.

good job on building the chiefs pieholeioli, you like many others try to live off the fame bb & company has brought you.  you have no talent, so shuttttttup, for players it’ll always be all about the money and who can blame them.

  • Schwank

I hope they don’t get this baseball rotissiere league mentality then everyone is overpriced and then they don’t do anything.  I remember when Branch and Givens left and they didn’t do anything except bring in Caldwell.  They lucked out and got Jabbar Gaffney but neither was great threat.  at the time i thought it cost us the 2006 championship.

Brady has more than enough Offensive weapons. One could argue that he has too many ie Gronk, Hernandez, Lloyd, Ridley, Vereen, Woody, Edelman just to name a few. We need DEFENSE and that is the only thing stopping us from winning the Big game.  Obviously we can score more than enough offensive pts(1st last yr), but our Defense can’t stop the other team. Edelman can take over for Wes and we will go on winning. Now will Bill spend the cash on Defense? We shall see. I can feel a big name coming to NE soon. :)

Browns fan here, so you already know how I feel about Belichick. OK having said that this reminds me of what Bill did to Bernie Kosar and Cleveland. Now Kosar was no Welker but he was a regional hero from the area and a pretty fair QB in his day.

Enjoy the ride Pats fans and enjoy the presser when Billy Boy stands there sniffing and snot gobbing and grunting and saying nothing while spewing arrogance. Meanwhile the clock ticks on Brady’s prime and Bill’s Magic continues to wane like the snow piles in Southie after a soft spring rain.

PS the good news is that the coach that selected Tim Tebow in the first round is making offensive coordinator decisions for this team. Sleep well all.

So much for Brady’s restructuring his contract, he freed up 8 million in cap space and made it very clear he wanted Welker back. Reports say that he is pissed and I don’t blame him. BB is an arrogant man and didn’t want a perinial 100 plus receptions because of a Welker comment. I am a die hard Pats fan, but maybe Brady should ask to be traded???? To make it worse they go out and sign Amendola for 5 yrs 31 million.
