More late-night Patriots news: the Patriots will be hosting free agent defensive end John Abraham on a visit on Friday, according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network.

The 34-year-old Abraham, who recently was cut loose by the Falcons after seven seasons in Atlanta, has spent a total of 13 seasons in the league, and the 6-foot-4, 263-pounder has at least 9.5 sacks in each of his last three seasons, and has 122 sacks over the course of his career.

Like the situation around Adrian Wilson, there’s some question as to how much Abraham has left in the tank. However, he could provide some depth at the defensive end spot for New England — the Patriots were able to squeeze good seasons out of both Andre Carter and Mark Anderson in 2011 as situational pass rushers. If they feel Abraham could provide the same sort of boost to a pass rush that was inconsistent at times over the course of the 2012 season, then Abraham has a good shot at making the roster.

Why question what he has left in the tank??  The man had ten sacks and 6 forced fumbles last year!!  Damn, I would love to have him, and anyone who thinks he is done needs to take a look at his numbers!!  He played all 16 games last year, and has only missed 2 games in the last 6 years, and only 33 over his 13 year career, so he is durable..  He has 32.5 sacks over his last 3 seasons, and is showing no major signs of slowing down..  I have said that they need to get this guy the minute I heard Atlanta released him!!!   Pull the trigger on Abe and Wilson coach!!!  PULL THE TRIGGER!!!

I think if the Pats were to sign Abraham, he’d be exactly what is described in this article when mentioned Andre Carter and Mark Anderson–a situational pass rusher.  I think his 9.5 sacks last year show he still has plenty left in the tank, and he wouldn’t have to play as many snaps here as he did in Atlanta either.  I think it’d be a solid signing, and with Mayo, Dane Fletcher, Spikes, and Abraham, you have a nice core there.  The knock on Abraham is his weakness as a defender against the run, but like I said, that likely wouldn’t be his role on the team either.  Hope there are more defensive guys making visits to Foxboro soon! I still really want them to sign Ed Reed, but I’m letting go of that dream pretty quickly…

might also help chandler jones’s development.

All fine and Good. Another Player with experience, but advanced age. When are the Pats going to address the Secondary? Chung is gone, so is Dennard and Talib doesn’t look like a viable option for the Pats standpoint. Drafting DB has not been their strong-point. Darius Butler, or the often injured Dowling haven’t worked out very well. Realistically speaking there are at the very least 4 holes to fill.

Pat’s have wasted a LOT of Draft Choices ( some pretty high ) on DB’s who are not able to make the Transition from College to an NFL Caliber DB.

    report: pats sign abraham

I love this move. I’m not looking 5 years down the road anymore for a youth movement. Brady doesn’t have 10 years left. Load up now on guys who have made thier money and want a ring. That’s how they used to do it and should do it again now. I still think they have a shot at Talib.

    REPORT: PATS SIGN ABRAHAM

  • Titletown1

Another fossil. The Pats have been doing this “just sign an over the hill type and hope he has something left for a season” and let the offense carry the team. It seems BB is looking forward when it comes to the offense and backwards when it comes to the defense…
